When the Nashville Christian Institute, an African-American church of Christ K-12 school, closed its doors in 1967, Lipscomb’s library inherited the school’s documents. In the spring of 2024, Beaman Library decided to publish these documents in our Carolyn Wilson Digital Collections. Before publishing them, we asked graduates of the school for help with identifying and labeling photos and other significant items. Thanks to the NCI community’s efforts, Beaman Library is now able to present a comprehensive online collection of photos, letters, board meeting minutes, and other documents that tell the history of the school at a pivotal moment in U.S. …

Teachers’ Perspectives On Creating Secondary Attachments With Infants And Toddlers Experiencing Toxic Stress, Cheryl A. Hovey Sep 2024

Teachers’ Perspectives On Creating Secondary Attachments With Infants And Toddlers Experiencing Toxic Stress, Cheryl A. Hovey

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The number of infants and toddlers experiencing toxic stress in the United States has increased significantly. Toxic stress, characterized by prolonged exposure to adverse experiences, has significant implications for the development of infants and toddlers. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore early childhood teachers’ perspectives on the successes and challenges to create secondary attachments with infants and toddlers exposed to toxic stress. The conceptual framework was Bowlby’s attachment theory. Two research questions addressed the perspectives of early childhood teachers’ successes and challenges to create secondary attachments with infants and toddlers experiencing toxic stress and what they …

Neuroimmune interactions are essential for the development of neuropathic pain, yet the contributions of distinct immune cell populations have not been fully unraveled. Here, we demonstrate the critical role of B cells in promoting mechanical hypersensitivity (allodynia) after peripheral nerve injury in male and female mice. Depletion of B cells with a single injection of anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody at the time of injury prevented the development of allodynia. B cell-deficient (muMT) mice were similarly spared from allodynia. Nerve injury was associated with increased immunoglobulin G (IgG) accumulation in ipsilateral lumbar dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) and dorsal spinal cords. IgG was …

Michigan Tech Publications

The Pierre Auger Observatory is the most sensitive instrument to detect photons with energies above 1017 eV. It measures extensive air showers generated by ultrahigh energy cosmic rays using a hybrid technique that exploits the combination of a fluorescence detector with a ground array of particle detectors. The signatures of a photon-induced air shower are a larger atmospheric depth of the shower maximum (Xmax) and a steeper lateral distribution function, along with a lower number of muons with respect to the bulk of hadron-induced cascades. In this work, a new analysis technique in the energy interval between 1 and 30 …

Makara Journal of Science

Potent radiolabelled compounds eligible for therapy of prostate cancer need to be developed. Hence, we developed two candidate therapeutic agents bearing the iodine-131 (131I) radionuclide, namely, [131I]-xanthine (3,7-dihydropurine-2,6-dione) and [131I]-hypoxanthine (1,9-dihydro-6H-purin-6-one). The radiolabelled compounds were subjected to a cellular uptake study, which was accomplished by incubating [131I]-xanthine and [131I]-hypoxanthine with the human prostate cancer cell line (LNCaP) for 5, 15, 30, 60, and 90 min. Results showed that the accumulation of both [131I]-xanthine and [131I]-hypoxanthine in prostate cancer cells was significantly higher than the …

40-Gene Expression Profile Test Predicting Metastatic Risk In Localized, High-Risk Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma For Peer Review, Luna Samman, Chloe Fernandez, Carlos Gomez-Meade

GME Publications

This case study investigates the use of a 40-gene expression profile to independently predict the risk of metastasis in an immunocompromised 75-year-old male patient with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of his left cheek. The patient's previous medical history included non-melanoma skin cancer. Traditional staging methods, such as those from the American Joint Committee on Cancer 8th edition and Brigham and Women's Hospital, suggested a high risk of metastasis for this patient. However, the 40-gene expression profile test identified the patient as having a low risk (Class 1 result) of metastasis within 3 years. The patient successfully underwent Mohs surgery, and …
