Settling Of Two Rigidly Connected Spheres, Z. Maches, Morgane Houssais Sep 2024

Settling Of Two Rigidly Connected Spheres, Z. Maches, Morgane Houssais

Physics

Laboratory experiments and particle-resolved simulations are employed to investigate the settling dynamics of a pair of rigidly connected spherical particles of unequal size. They yield a detailed picture of the transient evolution and the terminal values of the aggregate's orientation angle and its settling and drift velocities as functions of the aspect ratio and the Galileo number, which denotes the ratio of buoyancy and viscous forces acting on the aggregate. At low to moderate values of, the aggregate's orientation and velocity converge to their terminal values monotonically, whereas for higher -values the aggregate tends to undergo a more complex motion. …

Using An Anti-Racist Research Framework To Design Studies Of Oral Human Papillomavirus And Oropharyngeal Cancer In San Francisco: Rationale And Protocol For The Health Equity And Oral Health In People Living With Hiv (Heohp) Qualitative Study, Alessandro Villa

All Publications

Introduction: The goal of our research programme is to develop culturally appropriate patient-specific interventions for primary and secondary prevention of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) among people living with HIV (PLWH); PLWH are at a higher risk for OPC than the general population and, as with many cancers, there are disparities in OPC health outcomes by race and ethnicity. Our study incorporates an anti-racist research framework that proposes considering racism as a foundational sociocultural system that causes ill health. We expand the framework to include biases due to gender, sexual orientation, HIV status and membership in other non-dominant groups. …

A Bird’S Eye View Of Crime: Assessing The Effectiveness Of Mobile Watchtowers On Vehicle-Related Thefts, James D. Kelsay, Ian A. Silver, Jaya B. Davis, Brook Rollins

Open Initiatives Grant Funded Publications-Archive

Objective Recent reports suggest that thefts of vehicles and thefts from vehicles have increased significantly over the last several years. Some police agencies have turned to mobile surveillance watchtowers to address this problem. This study examines the effectiveness of these mobile watchtowers at reducing vehicle-related thefts in Arlington, Texas.

Methods An interrupted time series analysis is used to determine whether the use of mobile watchtowers reduces the frequency of vehicle-related thefts.

Results The watchtowers are associated with a small, but significant, decrease in vehicle-related thefts. However, this effect appears to decay over time.

Conclusion Mobile watchtowers may be a viable …

Boeing Ruling Is A Cautionary Tale For Trade Secret Litigants, Matthew D'Amore Sep 2024

Boeing Ruling Is A Cautionary Tale For Trade Secret Litigants, Matthew D'Amore

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

On Aug. 14, a $72 million jury trial win by Zunum Aero Inc. against The Boeing Co. in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington for trade secret misappropriation evaporated with the court's post-trial holding that Zunum had failed to identify its trade secrets sufficiently.

How did we get here after three years of litigation, eight days of trial and countless dollars spent? How can litigants — and courts — avoid this situation in the future?

Clear pretrial identification of trade secrets is key, and litigants can find a road map for this in the Sedona Conference's …

BACKGROUND: Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is common, and 20-30% of patients presenting with HMB are diagnosed with an inherited bleeding disorder (IBD). Despite the frequent association of HMB with bleeding disorders, specific learning objectives on this topic are lacking for Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN) residents.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the exposure of OBGYN residents to didactics, clinical training, and confidence in evaluation and management of patients with HMB due to IBDs.

METHODS: Prospective survey of OBGYN residents through email solicitation. Residents were invited to complete an anonymous 26-item survey, querying residents' confidence in evaluation and management of HMB in …

Using The Web-First Tailored Design Method In A Rural Population: A Follow-Up Investigation, Betsy Garrison, Timothy S. Killian, Kelly A. Way, Zola Moon

Human Development and Family Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Surveys remain a mainstay of social sciences research. The study’s primary purpose was to replicate a web-first tailored design method (TDM) in a previously surveyed rural population from a state in the mid-south of the U.S. to investigate changes in response mode (web versus paper). Most respondents did not change their response mode between the two data collection periods. They chose to complete their surveys on paper rather than the internet, even though most had access to and used the internet. The use of TDM continues to be an effective data collection strategy for a rural population. Given the emphasis …

Navigating The Maze: Women Experiences Transitioning From Faculty To High-Level Administration In Four-Year Postsecondary Institutions In The United States, Jonathan Miles Hubbell

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the experiences of women transitioning from faculty roles to high-level administrative positions within four-year postsecondary institutions in the United States. Utilizing a phenomenological approach, this study investigates the strategies, challenges, and successes of nine women who have navigated this career progression, highlighting the systemic barriers they faced and the resilience they developed along the way. Through the lens of resiliency theory and intersectionality, the research examines how women balance personal and professional obligations, overcome institutional barriers, and utilize mentorship networks to support their advancement. From the in-depth interviews, four themes emerged: (a) adaptability, (b) resilience, (c) mentoring, …

Shifting Priorities: A Comparative Assessment Of The Trump And Biden Administrations’ Conventional Arms Policies, Jeremy Coppola Sep 2024

Shifting Priorities: A Comparative Assessment Of The Trump And Biden Administrations’ Conventional Arms Policies, Jeremy Coppola

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights and Social Justice (ERSJ) Blog

The United States “cannot be both the world’s leading champion of peace and the world’s leading supplier of weapons of war”. The United States Conventional Arms Transfer (“CAT”) Policy establishes the executive branch’s priorities and reasoning for the export of conventional arms to other nations. At its inception in 1979, CAT Policy was a “policy of self-imposed restraint” with regards to arm sales and transfers to any nation. It has since evolved, with each subsequent administration having its own view of the role the United States should play in championing peace. The Biden Administration has made significant progress in advancing …

Higher Education Administrators’ Perceptions Of A Dual Diploma High School Program: A Single Institution Case Study Of International Student Transition Experiences, Tian Qin, Jon Mcnaughtan Sep 2024

Higher Education Administrators’ Perceptions Of A Dual Diploma High School Program: A Single Institution Case Study Of International Student Transition Experiences, Tian Qin, Jon Mcnaughtan

Health Care Administration Faculty Research

This study investigates perceptions of administrators of a dual diploma high school program on international students’ college transition experiences. Specifically, we focus on a group of higher education administrators who operate a dual diploma program between the study institution and high schools in Brazil. It is important to gather qualitative feedback from administrators to make program decisions. Using Schlossberg’s Theory of Transition (1984) as the theoretical framework, this study follows a set interview protocol to investigate the role the dual diploma program has in aiding transition to college. The findings show multiple perceived student benefits after the completion of the …

Neuroepithelial Bodies And Terminal Bronchioles Are Niches For Distinctive Club Cells That Repair The Airways Following Acute Notch Inhibition, Sai Manoz Lingamallu, Aditya Deshpande, Neenu Joy, Kirthana Ganeshan Sep 2024

Neuroepithelial Bodies And Terminal Bronchioles Are Niches For Distinctive Club Cells That Repair The Airways Following Acute Notch Inhibition, Sai Manoz Lingamallu, Aditya Deshpande, Neenu Joy, Kirthana Ganeshan

Open Access archive

Lower airway club cells (CCs) serve the dual roles of a secretory cell and a stem cell. Here, we probe how the CC fate is regulated. We find that, in response to acute perturbation of Notch signaling, CCs adopt distinct fates. Although the vast majority transdifferentiate into multiciliated cells, a “variant” subpopulation (v-CCs), juxtaposed to neuroepithelial bodies (NEBs; 5%–10%) and located at bronchioalveolar duct junctions (>80%), does not. Instead, v-CCs transition into lineage-ambiguous states but can revert to a CC fate upon restoration of Notch signaling and repopulate the airways with CCs and multiciliated cells. The v-CC response to …

Parents’ Perception Of Family Dynamics When Their Children Use Video Games Excessively, Joseph Benjamin Collins Sep 2024

Parents’ Perception Of Family Dynamics When Their Children Use Video Games Excessively, Joseph Benjamin Collins

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Excessive video game use among youth has been linked to communication problems within families and disrupted family dynamics, notably reducing time spent with family members and reinforcing withdrawal from family activities and other recreational pursuits. While quantitative research has addressed the connection between children’s excessive video gaming and its negative impact on family dynamics, a deeper understanding of parents' perceptions remained needed. This study aimed to explore how parents described family dynamics when their children engaged in excessive gaming, using attachment theory as the theoretical framework. Data were collected through semistructured interviews with 12 parents, and thematic analysis was used …
