As Johnson notes, there are many books about Marshall, and Johnson highlights the value of Bunting’s book, which contextualizes Marshall’s early career—from experience as a staff officer (rather than leading troops in combat), to having authority in overseas assignments, to recreation. Johnson notes that “Marshall had a different military career than that which is usually lauded today.” He …

Because Of Who We Are: A Fresh Perspective On Calvin’S Doctrine Of The Image Of God And Human Dignity, Sam Neulsaem Ha

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Scholars have connected Calvin’s idea of the imago Dei with the modern concept of inherent human dignity. Others have emphasized how Calvin tried to use the image of God to promote the significance of human dignity without connecting it with political theories. These arguments may be justifiable to some extent. However, my concern is that these scholars focus on the image of God in others rather than on how it transforms individuals who live out its renewal. For Calvin, the restoration of the image of God by the Holy Spirit aimed at enabling a holy and righteous life. In his …

Turkish Journal of Botany

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is currently considered to be an important stress metabolite with regulatory functions in plants. Exogenous GABA is known to be able to enhance the tolerance of different plant species to drought and salt stress. However, its effects on the functioning of stress-protective systems in triticale, an intergeneric wheat-rye hybrid with specific adaptation strategies to abiotic stresses, remained completely unstudied. We studied the effects of exogenous GABA (0.5 mM) on the growth as well as on the antioxidant and osmoprotective systems of triticale seedlings (cv. 'Rarytet') under simulated drought (15% PEG 6000), salt stress (100 mM NaCl), or …

Turkish Journal of Botany

The campos rupestres, ecosystems that are both unique and highly diverse, are home to a variety of endemic species, including Comanthera bisulcata (Eriocaulaceae). This species, of economic importance, has its inflorescences used in handicrafts due to the fact that they retain the appearance of living structures even after being harvested and dried. The trade of these inflorescences depends almost exclusively on extraction, an activity of great importance for the traditional communities of the Espinhaço Meridional municipalities, in Minas Gerais. However, research is essential to improve the management of this native species. In this study, we highlight the importance of pollination …

An Approach To Analyze Spatiotemporal Patterns Of Gene Expression At Single-Cell Resolution In Candida Albicans-Infected Mouse Tongues, Elena Lindemann-Perez, Diana L Rodríguez, J Christian Pérez

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Microbial gene expression measurements derived from infected organs are invaluable to understand pathogenesis. However, current methods are limited to "bulk" analyses that neglect microbial cell heterogeneity and the lesion's spatial architecture. Here, we report the use of hybridization chain reaction RNA fluorescence in situ hybridization (HCR RNA-FISH) to visualize and quantify Candida albicans transcripts at single-cell resolution in tongues of infected mice. The method is compatible with fixed-frozen and formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues. We document cell-to-cell variation and intriguing spatiotemporal expression patterns for C. albicans mRNAs that encode products implicated in oral candidiasis. The approach provides a spatial dimension to gene …

Enhancing Resilience And Reducing Waste In Food Supply Chains: A Systematic Review And Future Directions Leveraging Emerging Technologies, Asmaa Seyam, May Ei Barachi, Cheng Zhang, Bo Du, Jun Shen, Sujith Samuel Mathew

All Works

The sustainability of food supply chains is gaining increasing attention, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic. A food supply system that simultaneously prioritises resilience and minimises wastage is crucial. It is found that many studies have explored reducing food waste and increasing supply chain resilience as separate objectives, but research is scarce investigating both objectives in conjunction. This paper presents a comprehensive systematic review focusing on existing solutions to reducing food waste and enhancing resilience. It discusses future directions, particularly leveraging emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things, blockchain, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. The studies are categorised into three …
