A School Leader’S Experiences With Ableism In An Educational System, Scottie Basham
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The current organizational autoethnographic study aims to problematize ableism as an ideology that permeates and contributes to the inequities students with disabilities face in education. I share how I came to see ableism as an ideology that permeates and contributes to recursive practices in special education and share experiences that illustrate to school leaders ableist assumptions that are ingrained in leading a Special Education Center. Using organizational autoethnography, I share my experience as a first-year principal to provide a first-hand account of recursive practices within the educational organization, rooted in ableism, and discuss how those practices affected both myself, as …

INTRODUCTION: A drowning definition is available for use with National Syndromic Surveillance Program (NSSP) data. However, its accuracy in capturing drowning emergency department and urgent care visits at the regional level is unknown. We tested the ability of the syndromic surveillance (SS) definition in capturing unintentional and undetermined intent drowning (UUID) and describe UUID SS visit trends in a large metropolitan area.
METHODS: We applied the drowning definition to NSSP data from 2016 to 2022 for the 8-county metropolitan Houston region. We queried the dataset for UUID ICD-10-CM codes and manually reviewed the chief complaint (CC) and discharge diagnosis (DD) …

Chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) is associated with morbidity, mortality, impaired quality of life, prolonged immunosuppressive therapy, and infection risk after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Major strides have occurred in the understanding of cGVHD biology; National Institutes of Health Consensus meetings have refined rigorous approaches to diagnosis, staging, and response criteria; major interventional trials have established standard benchmarks for treatment outcome; and 3 agents to date have been US Food and Drug Administration approved for treating corticosteroid-refractory cGVHD. Promising results from several recent trials have led some, but not others, to conclude that the risk of developing cGVHD is sufficiently …

Introduction Cystic fibrosis (CF) is commonly complicated by chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Despite highly effective management options, CRS in people with CF (PwCF+CRS) may be refractory to medical therapy, eventually requiring endoscopic sinus surgery. The impact of sinus surgery on pulmonary, quality of life (QOL), and other outcomes in PwCF+CRS in the expanding era of highly effective modulator therapy has not been fully elucidated. This study aims to determine if endoscopic sinus surgery can offer superior outcomes for PwCF+CRS when compared to continued medical treatment of CRS. Methods and analysis This multi-institutional, observational, prospective cohort study will enroll 150 adults with …

Ectopic pregnancy (EP) is the leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality in the first trimester. Using an untargeted metabolomic approach, we sought to identify putative plasma biomarkers using tandem liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry for the detection of tubal EP. This case-control study included the prospective recruitment of 50 tubal EP cases and 50 early intrauterine pregnancy controls. To avoid over-fitting, logistic regression models were developed in a randomly selected discovery group (30 cases vs. 30 controls) and validated in the test group (20 cases vs. 20 controls). In total, 585 mass spectral features were detected, of which 221 molecular features …

We discuss the potential usefulness of molecular testing of soil, dust, and water samples to detect medically important parasites, and where such testing could be used to supplement stool sampling in humans. A wide variety of parasites including protozoa and helminths, many of which are zoonotic, have an important infection reservoir in the environment. In some cases, this environmental period is essential for further parasite development. We describe the progress in implementing methods for the molecular detection of these parasites in soil across eight collaborating centers in Latin America and represent a variety of potential applications in improving our understanding …

School Leadership Review
Do the advantages of increased student engagement in a project-based learning environment sustain during a pandemic when compared to a traditional program? Researchers were able to meet with students in both programs in a midwestern school district that gave them a choice between both project-based and traditional approaches. Semi structured interviews with randomly selected students in focus groups allowed researchers to make useful comparisons to themes based on engagement using Schlecty’s (2011) model. An ability to maintain task focus using Duckworth’s GRIT scale (2007) was also captured longitudinally via a survey in students’ freshman and senior years. Qualitative analysis of …

Introduction: Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma (PDAC) patients exhibit extremely poor prognosis. KRAS mutation on codon-12 is present in 70–95% of PDAC cases and it drives PDAC growth and progression. Galectin-1 (Gal-1) is present in both PDAC and stromal cells, being involved in tumor microenvironment, immune cell activation and metastasis. Therefore, this study discusses the efficiency of combined inhibition of mutated KRASG12D and Gal-1 inhibition to effectively suppress PDAC growth and progression. For this we have delivered KRASG12D inhibiting siRNA (siKRASG12D) using a superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle (SPION) and a galectin inhibitor.
Methods: SPION nano-formulation was used to …

Purpose: Health professions students of the UTRGV AHEC Scholars Program sought to improve coordination of care and reduce barriers to care recommendations for patients of the UTHealthRGV AHEC clinics. We enacted a student-run multidisciplinary health care system navigation intervention, to address health disparities experienced by residents of colonias in the RGV.
Description: Health professions students voluntarily signed up to become “health care system navigators” (HCSNs) as part of a community-engagement activity sponsored by the AHEC Scholars Program. Students received informal training from AHEC staff in the use of the clinic EMR related to identifying patient contact information, documenting …
