Understanding the complete nature of Galactic sources that accelerate cosmic rays up to 1015 eV energy (Galactic PeVatrons) is still an unsolved problem in high-energy astrophysics. Although supernova remnants have long been considered as the best candidates for Galactic PeVatrons, a clear association of SNRs with PeVatrons needs further exploration. Recently, the LHAASO collaboration published its first catalog of 90 very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray sources, and a few of them have no obvious counterparts at other wavelengths. Here, we will present morphology and spectral analysis of one such unassociated source LHAASO J2108+5157 using VERITAS and HAWC data.

Many Americans terminate employment, voluntarily or involuntarily, prior to vesting in their 401(k) plans. This costs them a lot of money; it also saves companies a lot of money. Vesting schedules used by some 401(k) plans cause plan participants to forfeit significant portions of their compensation—employer contributions made on their behalf—that should be increasing their retirement savings. This money is recycled by such plans to offset their employer contribution obligations and other costs. We analyzed data from Form 5500s to identify trends in and implications of vesting schedule use by 408 single-employer 401(k) plans over the five-year period of 2018-2022. …

Understanding Necrotizing Enterocolitis Endotypes And Acquired Intestinal Injury Phenotypes From A Historical And Artificial Intelligence Perspective., Alain Cuna, Navin Kumar, Venkatesh Sampath
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) remains a devastating disease in preterm and term neonates. Despite significant progress made in understanding NEC pathogenesis over the last 50 years, the inability of current definitions to discriminate the various pathophysiological processes underlying NEC has led to an umbrella term that limits clinical and research progress. In this mini review, we provide a historical perspective on how NEC definitions and pathogenesis have evolved to our current understanding of NEC endotypes. We also discuss how artificial intelligence-based approaches are influencing our knowledge of risk-factors, classification and prognosis of NEC and other neonatal intestinal injury phenotypes.

Optimal Radar Ranging Pulse To Resolve Two Reflectors, Andrew N. Jordan, John C. Howell, Achim Kempf, Shunxing Zhang, Derek White
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Previous work established fundamental bounds on subwavelength resolution for the radar range resolution problem, called superradar [Phys. Rev. Appl. 20, 064046 (2023)]. In this work, we identify the optimal waveforms for distinguishing the range resolution between two reflectors of identical strength, leveraging results in quantum metrology. We discuss both the unnormalized optimal waveform as well as the best square-integrable pulse and their variants. Using orthogonal function theory, we give an explicit algorithm to optimize the wave pulse in finite time to have the best performance. We also explore range resolution estimation with unnormalized waveforms with multiparameter methods to …

School of Psychology
Anhedonia, or a deficit in the liking, wanting, and seeking of rewards, is typically assessed via self-reported "in-the-moment" emotional and motivational responses to reward stimuli and activities. Given that mental imagery is known to evoke emotion and motivational responses, we conducted two studies to investigate the relationship between mental imagery use and self-reported anhedonia. Using a novel Reward Response Scale (adapted from the Dimensional Anhedonia Rating Scale, DARS; Rizvi et al., 2015) modified to assess deliberate and spontaneous mental imagery use, Study 1 ( N = 394) compared uninstructed and instructed mental imagery use, and Study 2 ( N = …

Sequence Stratigraphy And Hydrocarbon Potential Of The Paleozoic Successions On The Arabian Platform And Southeast Türkiye, Muhi̇tti̇n Şenalp, Sema Teti̇ker
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
In 1989, the first prolific hydrocarbon reservoirs were discovered by Saudi Aramco in the highly porous and permeable friable continental sandstones (Unayzah reservoirs) and shallow marine carbonates (Khuff reservoirs) of the Paleozoic successions in south of Riyadh, Central Arabia. These successions were strongly affected by tectonic movements (Caledonian and Hercynian orogenesis) and Early and Late Paleozoic Gondwana glaciations. Therefore, some sections were fully eroded or significantly reduced in their thickness. The sequence stratigraphic interpretation of the Paleozoic successions helped to understand the depositional environments and regional distribution of the source, reservoir and cap rock facies in an improved palynologic studies. …
Top To Bottom Interactive Velocity Analysis Using Travel-Time Ellipses And First Break Times From Walkaway Vertical Seismic Profiling Data: A Synthetic Study, Cemal Erdemi̇r
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
An interactive velocity analysis method is introduced in this paper and its efficacy is tested on various walkaway vertical seismic profile (WVSP) modeled data sets. In WVSP surveys, interval velocity profiles are determined fairly accurately along the VSP borehole using first break travel time picks from the zero-offset VSP (ZVSP) data. However the accuracy of these vertical velocities fade away quickly as the source distance (offset) from the VSP borehole increases due to possible horizontal changes in the geology or dips of the horizons. If the layer boundaries are not known, a simple approach type of ray tracing using horizontally …

Molecular Targets For Breast Cancer Therapy, Hamidreza Montazeri Aliabadi
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
"Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women, and for a while, it surpassed lung cancer as the most diagnosed cancer, regardless of gender, in 2020 [1]. Chemotherapy and hormone therapy are still the first line of treatment, despite extensive research in molecularly targeted drugs. Therefore, triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is still known as the most challenging type for treatment due to the limited identified targets. Inherent and acquired resistance are still major hurdles in breast cancer therapy, which further highlights the importance of identifying new molecular targets in this battle. The inherent resistance of unresponsive …

Integrating Data-Driven And Mechanism-Driven Modeling In Drug Discovery And Hepatotoxicity Evaluation, Xuelian Jia
Theses and Dissertations
The pharmacological activities and hepatotoxicity significantly influence the success or failure of new drugs during drug discovery and development. Traditional experimental methods, such as animal models, are costly and time-consuming for chemical testing. There is a great need to develop in vitro and computational modeling to help identify the pharmacological activities and hepatotoxicity potential in the early stage of drug discovery and safety evaluation. In this dissertation, new computational models and associated modeling frameworks were described for predicting the biological profile and hepatotoxicity of chemicals. Firstly, a novel data mining and Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) workflow was developed to construct …

We characterize the performance of our computational pipeline for real-time gamma-ray burst (GRB) detection and localization aboard the Advanced Particle-astrophysics Telescope (APT) – a space-based observatory for MeV to TeV gamma-ray astronomy – and its smaller, balloon-borne prototype, the Antarctic Demonstrator for APT (ADAPT), whose scientific focus will be the detection of MeV transients. These instruments observe scintillation light from multiple Compton scattering and photoabsorption of gamma-ray photons across a series of CsI detector layers. We infer the incident angle of each photon's first scattering to localize its source direction to a Compton ring about the vector defined by its …

Ideational Diffusion And The Great Witch Hunt In Central Europe, Kerice Doten‑Snitker, Steven Pfaff, Yuan Hsiao
Ideational Diffusion And The Great Witch Hunt In Central Europe, Kerice Doten‑Snitker, Steven Pfaff, Yuan Hsiao
Sociology Faculty Articles and Research
The great upsurge of witch trials in early modern Europe remains a historical puzzle. Popularly known as the “witch craze”, this eruption of persecution is puzzling because belief in witchcraft had existed for centuries, but large-scale witch-hunting appeared rather abruptly, spread widely, and was remarkably brutal in comparison with the past. We define a theory of ideational diffusion to describe the general process of the emergence and spread of a new idea along with its prescribed behavioral change, in this case the adoption of witch-hunting. Ideational diffusion distinguishes between the adoption of new ideas, which lead social actors to reinterpret …

Influencer Authenticity: To Grow Or To Monetize, Cristina Nistor, Matthew Selove, J. Miguel Villas-Boas
Business Faculty Articles and Research
Social media influencers can grow their number of followers by endorsing products that are authentic for their social media persona or, alternatively, monetize their followers by endorsing a wider variety of products. We develop a dynamic model in which an influencer continuously decides whether to be authentic as she balances increasing awareness with generating revenues from sponsored posts. We derive conditions in which the influencer is authentic during an early growth phase, but she becomes inauthentic once a large enough fraction of potential followers are aware of her. Celebrities become inauthentic at a lower awareness level than pure social media …

Coral Reef Protection Is Fundamental To Human Rights, Emma F. Camp, Irus Braverman, Genevieve Wilkinson, Christian R. Voolstra
Journal Articles
The intensifying loss of coral reefs from global climate change and local stressors has seen international commitments targeted at conservation and repair, for example the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Fulfilling these targets requires decisions to be made on where, when, and how to act, ultimately dictating where limited resources will be deployed. Every choice on action or inaction toward our ocean has direct and indivisible consequences not only for the health of marine ecosystems but also for the health of humans, particularly those who directly depend on marine habitats, both culturally and economically. The well-being of the environment, humans, and …
