In the past several years, there has been a greater social call for police officers to be civilly and/or criminally liable for their actions. It is unclear if concern for liability exists today among police officers and if this concern influences how officers interaction with community members. The current study explored the civil and criminal liability views of police officers and if officers feel that this liability changed how they provide services. Data for this survey came from a recent survey of police officers in the U.S. Midwest. The results will be presented and discussed

Cease The Alarms: A Nurse-Led Bundled Approach To Alarm Management, Annie Tolliver
2024
EBP
Practice Problem:The use of audible alarms to monitor pediatric patients is crucial to patient care. Alarms notify nurses of potentially life-threatening situations. However, increasing non-actionable alarms can cause desensitization. This leads to ignoring and mismanaging alarms, ultimately putting patients at serious risk. For those caring for the sickest pediatric patients, strategies for reducing non-actionable alarms to mitigate alarm fatigue are needed to enhance patient safety.
Literature/Evidence:A review of the literature highlighted emerging evidence-based practice supporting the use of the CEASE bundle for nurse-led alarm management, as outlined in a quasi-experimental research study. Multiple systematic reviews substantiate the …

Detecting Edges Of Geologic Sources From Gravity Or Magnetic Anomalies Through A Novel Algorithm Based On Hyperbolic Tangent Function, Hanbing Ai, Yunus Levent Eki̇nci̇, Ahmad Alvandi, Hazel Deni̇z Toktay, Çağlayan Balkaya, Arka Roy
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Directional derivative-based edge detectors are commonly used to outline the abrupt lateral variations in densities or magnetizations of geologic sources from potential-field datasets. Some subtle traces of faults, lithological contacts, and lineaments can be made more visible on anomaly maps using these algorithms. However, these algorithms generally suffer from common limitations such as blurry edges with low-resolution or faulty boundaries. To minimize these challenges, we proposed a new efficient edge detector that benefits from the hyperbolic tangent function. The performance of this detector was tested on the responses of a synthetic gravity model and Bishop's complex magnetic model. A Gaussian …

Got Questions? Call Us: Utilizing Telephone Triage To Help Pediatric Patients After Discharge, Susan Webber, Ann Gosdin
2024
EBP
Background: Discharge follow-up programs help to reduce avoidable readmissions and unnecessary returns to the emergency department. Our organization lacked a clearly defined post-inpatient discharge process for patients on the hospitalist service. Information on the after-visit summary (AVS) includes follow-up appointment instructions and lists the main hospital phone number. Primary care providers often refer patients back to the hospital for questions related to the hospital stay. Post-discharge follow-up phone calls are labor-intensive, hard to sustain, and may not meet the patient’s needs. We sought a technology solution to assist and engage families post-discharge.
Purpose: This project aims to determine if …

The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory is highly suitable for large-scale survey work. The high duty time (95%), large instantaneous FoV (2 sr), and sensitivity over the 300 GeV to more than 100 TeV energy range make it ideal for creating a catalog of very high energy (VHE) sources. Over the lifetime of the HAWC observatory, 4 catalogs have been produced 3 of which were constructed utilizing the full HAWC energy range while another used a restricted (>56 TeV) range. This talk will focus on the status of the planned 4HWC (full energy range) catalog including the newly developed …

Galactic PeVatrons are astrophysical sources accelerating particles up to a few PeV (∼1015 eV) energies. The primary signature of 100 TeV γ rays may come from PeV protons or multihundred TeV (not PeV) electrons. The search for PeVatrons has been one of the key science topics for VERITAS and HAWC. In 2021, LHAASO detected 14 steady γ-ray sources with photon energies above 100 TeV, up to 1.4 PeV. This provides a clear list of PeVatron candidates for further study with VERITAS and HAWC. Most of these sources contain possible source associations, such as supernova remnants, pulsar wind nebulae, and …
