This study explores the alignment of theoretical broiler growth models with practical farm conditions, emphasizing the value of integrating commercial data into simulation models. The EFG Broiler Growth Model, developed by Emmens, Fisher and Gous, is highlighted for its mechanistic approach, predicting growth based on feed intake. While empirical models are useful, they are limited by changes in genetics. Both mechanistic and empirical models struggle to predict how broilers will respond to feed under the challenging conditions typically experienced in commercial operations. Purpose: Telehealth audiological services offered within a mobile clinic can expand the range of hearing healthcare services to rural and remote areas where many patients, in particular infants with hearing loss, go undetected due to limited access to specialist care. This study describes caregiver perceptions on the use of synchronous telehealth-based Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) services offered for their infants.

Method: A self-administered questionnaire comprising a total of 15 questions was issued to forty (n = 40) caregivers to rate their perceptions of the service.

Purpose: Florida policy mandates newborn hearing screenings (NBHS) in hospitals. U.S. inpatient administrative hospital data reflects low rates of documented screenings. This analysis investigates inconsistencies between Florida policy and administrative records.

Method: Analysis of Florida statutory language was completed. Florida hospital administrative data was retrospectively analyzed using various statistical methods to explore differences in proportions of documented NBHS among distinct hospital types based on profit and teaching statuses.

Purpose: Comorbidities and ototoxic medications increase risk of hearing loss (HL) in infants admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICU; 6 per 1000 births) compared to well-babies (1.7 per 1000 births). For newborn hearing screening (NBHS), transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) testing is more efficient and less costly. Automated auditory brainstem response (aABR) testing yields higher sensitivity and specificity. This study will identify if aABR is cost-effective compared with TEOAE for NBHS in high-risk neonates.

Diagnostic overshadowing occurs when a patient with a pre-existing diagnosis presents with symptoms that are attributed to the diagnosis, but actually reflect a separate issue. This diagnostic overshadowing can lead to delays in diagnosis, as well as disparities in health care and outcomes. The following case will provide an example in which diagnostic overshadowing contributed to the delay of an autism diagnosis in a child who is deaf. Hindi-Urdu popular cinema, commonly referred to as Bollywood, largely reflects the evolution of various social attitudes in the Indian subcontinent. In order to better understand these films’ depiction of social attitudes surrounding mental illness and the implications for its treatment, this study creates and analyzes an anthology of Hindi-Urdu movies from the 1940’s to the present that portray some aspect of mental illness. Problem: Postoperative complications after cardiac surgery significantly impact both the short-term and long-term survival of patients. Cardiovascular diseases are a major health concern, accounting for 12% of health expenditures in the United States. A substantial number of patients with cardiovascular disease undergo invasive procedures, including cardiac surgery, and the incidence of postoperative complications is notable. This information underscores the need to effectively prevent postoperative adverse events to improve outcomes, reduce morbidity, shorten hospital stays, and lower health care costs.

This report details an ongoing social media influence campaign employing AI powered bots to influence political conversations in U.S. federal elections. This inauthentic network includes at least 686 accounts, and likely more. The campaign uses large language models to create organic seeming content in the replies of real users’ posts. Taking on conservative persona and perspectives, this campaign has targeted both Republican candidates (in primaries) and Democrats (in generals) in addition to advocating for specific issues. This report explores the network’s messaging, operations, and implications.

Animals within social groups respond to costs and benefits of sociality by adjusting the proportion of time they spend in close proximity to other individuals in the group (cohesion). Variation in cohesion between individuals, in turn, shapes important group-level processes such as subgroup formation and fission–fusion dynamics. Although critical to animal sociality, a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing cohesion remains a gap in our knowledge of cooperative behavior in animals. Dynamic Localization Of Endoplasmic Reticulum During Tetrahymena Conjugation, Guerrier Sabrice, Michael Patterson, Kaitlin Crofton, Michael Tucker, Shyhiem Walker

Changes in lipid composition at membrane fusion sites in mating Tetrahymena are thought to involve the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), but its localization to these sites has not been observed. Here we show ER distribution during Tetrahymena mating using TtRET1-GFP and GFP-KDEL. We find that both markers localize to perinuclear membranes and tubular structures that connect perinuclear membrane to plasma membrane at fusion sites. Interestingly, both markers disappear from parental macronuclei after emergence of zygotic macronuclei. These similarities in localization of established ER marker, GFP-KDEL, and TtRET1-GFP reveal TtRET1-GFP as a useful new live cell marker for the ER in Tetrahymena.
