Contemporary architectural practice has come to rely on a narrow repertoire of high-energy industrial materials, giving rise to what might be called a material "hegemonic structure" in which certain substances and construction logics dominate at the expense of others. This dominance suppresses material diversity and limits architecture's capacity to align with ecological processes, producing a systemic metabolic imbalance within the built environment. At its root, this imbalance reflects a structural absence: the persistent treatment of architecture as a closed, controllable system that imposes human will upon matter while suppressing its inherent agency.

Through framing, concealment, and pathway-guided movement, these gardens create layered spatial experiences that gradually unfold rather than reveal themselves all at once. Drawing from The Craft of Gardens by Ji Cheng, Scholar Gardens of China by R. Stewart Johnston, and The Classical Gardens of China by Yang Hongxun, this thesis identifies and synthesizes key spatial framing strategies embedded within Chinese classical gardens.

This thesis explores the possibilities and challenges that legacy hydro-powered dams and mill complexes offer. Through historical and contemporary analysis of New England’s 14,000 dams and of a particular site in Maynard, Massachusetts, the research delves into the factors that make these interventions so challenging. Background: Most critically ill children in the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) are immobilised. Prolonged immobilisation in the PICU negatively affects children's physical health outcomes. Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an early progressive exercise (EPE) intervention to improve the PICU-acquired muscle weakness and to assess the safety of the EPE intervention. Study Design: A single-centre pre- and post-intervention design was adopted. The intervention was the EPE starting within 48–72 h after PICU admission. The acute effects of asymmetrical cervical muscle fatigue on proprioception, gait, and balance remain understudied, especially considering its widespread occurrence in multiple populations.

Objective: To investigate the acute effects of asymmetrical cervical muscle fatigue on cervical proprioception, stepping ability, and standing postural sway in healthy young adults.

In April 2023, a brushfire erupted at the Queen’s River Preserve, a tract of open land in Exeter, Rhode Island. It spread quickly, to the level of a firestorm, driven by gusty winds and dry conditions. The preserve is a pine barren, a landscape of sandy soil and pitch pine trees, along the Queen’s River. It also abuts the residential and agricultural corridors of Exeter, creating a vulnerable threshold between open land resources and human habitation, known as the wildland urban interface. It required an unprecedented wildfire response for New England, including the region’s first human and livestock evacuation protocol. …

Deep venous drainage (DVD) is considered a negative prognostic factor in AVM surgery, yet its effect on postoperative functional decline remains incompletely defined. This study evaluates whether DVD predicts worsened functional status after surgical resection of Spetzler-Martin Grade II-III AVMs. This retrospective multicenter study analyzed 129 patients with Spetzler-Martin Grade II-III AVMs across nine centers in North America and Europe who underwent primary surgical resection. We excluded cases with prior endovascular or stereotactic interventions. The primary outcome measured was poor functional status, defined as modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score 3-6 at last follow up. This seminar addresses the complexity of the management of epilepsy in adults with intellectual development disorders (IDD), advocating holistic and multidisciplinary care aligned with the learning objectives of the International League Against Epilepsy. Epilepsy is significantly more prevalent in people with IDD, presenting unique diagnostic, therapeutic, and psychosocial challenges. Accurate diagnosis is hampered by limitations in communication, necessitating reliance on caregivers' observations. In adults with IDD and epilepsy, utilization of diagnostic tools, e.g., video electroencephalograph (EEG) monitoring, is helpful but can be challenging. Social prescribing is a health policy initiative that aims to create closer links betweenhealth services and community activities. Despite its rapid adoption there are concernsabout efficacy and value for money. We used a WELLBY (Wellbeing Adjusted Life Year)approach to identify the social value created through a national mental health-focussedgreen social prescribing (GSP) programme in England (2021-23). We found that GSP canlead to significant wellbeing benefits for people experiencing mental ill-health, with asocial return on investment (SROI) of between £2.38-£5.90. Conventional prediction models incorporating genetic and clinical factors including breast density underperform in non-European populations. We investigated an artificial intelligence-derived mammogram risk score (MRS), a summary of texture features that captures intrinsic breast-tissue characteristics-the substrate for cancer development. This study leveraged data from two North American screening cohorts totaling >226,000 women, including non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic Black, East Asian, South Asian, and Indigenous women. MRS distributions showed nonsignificant shifts (and similar SDs) between cohorts and across race and ethnic subgroups. MRS increased with age and was significantly associated with breast cancer risk, with hazard ratios per SD ranging from 2.24 [95% …

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances elevate brain amyloid-beta (Aβ) levels and represent a modifiable risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). The orexin/hypocretin system regulates sleep-wake behavior and has emerged as a therapeutic target in AD; however, the effects of FDA-approved dual orexin receptor antagonists (DORAs) on amyloid pathology remain unclear. We compared lemborexant, an FDA-approved DORA, to doxepin, an antihistaminergic sleep medication, on amyloid pathology and microglial responses in PSAPP mice.

The article presents a translation of an important document about organ music, published by the Theology Department at Wittenberg University in 1597. While written in response to an ongoing controversy, the document became the authoritative statement of the Lutheran church about organs and organ music in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The article presents the first complete English translation of the text and it analyzes the historical context of the document.

In modern science, disciplines such as physics, mechanical and civil engineering, seismology, and acoustics have conceptualized vibration as a quantifiable mechanical phenomenon, measured through the metrics of frequency, amplitude, and resonance. In contrast, scholarship in anthropology, musicology, and sound studies has approached vibration as a socio-historical, cultural, and political phenomenon. This article examines how vibration (spandan) operates as a metaphysical, sensory, and ethico-affective force that mediates relations among people, places, and environments. In this context, Morocco’s 2007 Autonomy Plan is presented as a negotiated framework of self-government under Moroccan sovereignty.

This article analyzes the evolution and consolidation of the Autonomy Plan using a conceptual approach based on self-determination, territorial governance, and conflict resolution theories. Revenue sharing between colleges and universities and their student-athletes marks one of the most significant developments in the NCAA’s nearly 120-year history. House v. NCAA and its subsequent settlement enabled many Division I colleges and universities to begin sharing revenue directly with student-athletes in 2025. However, the House Settlement leaves a critical question unanswered: whether revenue sharing must comply with Title IX requirements.
