Faculty Research 2024

The BAF chromatin remodeler regulates lineage commitment including cranial neural crest cell (CNCC) specification. Variants in BAF subunits cause Coffin-Siris syndrome (CSS), a congenital disorder characterized by coarse craniofacial features and intellectual disability. Approximately 50% of individuals with CSS harbor variants in one of the mutually exclusive BAF subunits, ARID1A/ARID1B. While Arid1a deletion in mouse neural crest causes severe craniofacial phenotypes, little is known about the role of ARID1A in CNCC specification. Using CSS-patient-derived ARID1A[thorn]/ induced pluripotent stem cells to model CNCC specification, we discovered that ARID1A- haploinsufficiency impairs epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a process necessary for CNCC delamination and migration …

Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors In The Management Of Brain Metastases From Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: A Comprehensive Review Of Current Trials, Guidelines And Future Directions, Arun Maharaj, Manmeet Ahluwalia

All Publications

Background: Brain metastases (BM) are a common, severe complication in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and are difficult to treat due to their complex tumor biology and the intricate microenvironment of the brain.

Objectives: This review examines the current role of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in treating NSCLC with BM, focusing on the latest clinical trials, emerging strategies, current guidelines, and future directions. We highlight the efficacy of ICIs as monotherapy and in combination with other treatments such as radiotherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, chemotherapy, and anti-VEGF agents.

Results: While no single treatment sequence is universally accepted, combining ICIs with …

Advancements In The Programmable Hyperspectral Seawater Scanner Measurement Technology For Enhanced Detection Of Harmful Algal Blooms, John J. Langan, Jungyun Bae

Michigan Tech Publications

The Programmable Hyperspectral Seawater Scanner (PHySS) represents a significant breakthrough in monitoring harmful algal blooms (HABs), specifically targeting the “Florida red tide” caused by Karenia brevis. By utilizing a Fourth-Derivative Spectral Similarity Index (SI), this study establishes a strong positive correlation between the SI and phytoplankton counts, underscoring the PHySS’s potential for early detection and effective management of HABs. Our findings suggest that the PHySS could act as a predictive tool, offering crucial lead time to mitigate the ecological and economic repercussions of blooms. However, this study also identifies certain limitations of the PHySS technology, such as its inability to …

The genomes of living lungfishes can inform on the molecular-developmental basis of the Devonian sarcopterygian fish–tetrapod transition. We de novo sequenced the genomes of the African (Protopterus annectens) and South American lungfishes (Lepidosiren paradoxa). The Lepidosiren genome (about 91 Gb, roughly 30 times the human genome) is the largest animal genome sequenced so far and more than twice the size of the Australian (Neoceratodus forsteri)1 and African2 lungfishes owing to enlarged intergenic regions and introns with high repeat content (about 90%). All lungfish genomes continue to expand as some transposable elements (TEs) are still active today. In particular, …

The Heights Of Summerlin V. District Ct. (Crupi), 140 Nev. Adv. Opn. No. 65 (October 3, 2024), Makenna Maddox

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

Healthcare facilities are not granted immunity under the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness Act (PREP Act) or Nevada’s Emergency Directive 011 (Directive 011) for a lack or failure to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. To be granted immunity from liability under the PREP Act, the complaint must allege a covered countermeasure or a prioritization of another method over a covered countermeasure. A general lack of action will not suffice. Under Directive 011, the drafters’ intentionally chose to exclude healthcare facilities from the language, thus affirming that healthcare facilities are not immune from liability.

Cultivation In Long-Term Simulated Microgravity Is Detrimental To Pyocyanin Production And Subsequent Biofilm Formation Ability Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, K. Z. M. Chen, L. M. Vu, Amy Cheng Vollmer

Biology Faculty Works

Pseudomonas aeruginosa forms aggregates known as biofilms. Previous studies have shown that when P. aeruginosa is cultivated in space, thicker and structurally different biofilms are formed than from those grown on Earth. We investigated how microgravity, simulated in a laboratory setting, influenced the growth, colonization, and virulence potentials of a P. aeruginosa PA14 wild-type strain, as well as two surface attachment-defective (sad) mutants altered at crucial biofilm-forming steps: flgK and pelA. Using high-aspect ratio rotating-wall vessel (HARV) bioreactors, P. aeruginosa bacteria were grown to stationary phase under prolonged (6 days) exposure to simulated microgravity or normal gravity …

Examination Of Photoinduced Radicals In Two Crystal Forms Of Triphenylamine Bis-Urea Macrocycles, Md Faizul Islam, Gamage Isuri P. Wijesekera, Anmon J. Sindt, Mark D. Smith, Linda S. Shimizu Oct 2024

Examination Of Photoinduced Radicals In Two Crystal Forms Of Triphenylamine Bis-Urea Macrocycles, Md Faizul Islam, Gamage Isuri P. Wijesekera, Anmon J. Sindt, Mark D. Smith, Linda S. Shimizu

Faculty Publications

This study probes two solvates of triphenylamine (TPA) bis-urea macrocycle 1 and their activated structures to evaluate their maximum photoinduced radicals (PIRs), the subsequent decay of the radicals, and their regeneration. The hierarchical assembly of TPAs shows promise in stabilizing less substituted derivatives, potentially expanding the utility of TPAs that lack stabilizing para-substituents. Single crystal structure analysis reveals that host 1 adopts a planar conformation with the two ureas pointing in opposite directions when dimethoxyethane (DME) is encapsulated within the channel. Whereas previously, 1 adopted a bowl-shaped conformation with the two ureas pointing in the same direction (syn …

Synergistic Approaches For Microstructural Refinement, Enhanced Mechanical And Wear Behaviour In Additively Manufactured 17-4 Ph Stainless Steel, Pradeep Kumar S

Theses and Dissertations

The surface and microstructural characteristics of additively manufactured parts play a significant role under mechanical loading. Due to its high strength, tailorable mechanical properties by heat treatment, and ease of printability, the 17-4 precipitation hardened (PH) stainless steel is gaining attention in the additive manufacturing (AM) field.

Selective Laser Melting (SLM), one of the laser-based powder bed fusion (L-PBF) processes, is capable of making fully dense metallic parts with high geometrical fidelity and greater design flexibility at high resolution. The main factors limiting the adoption of SLM are poor surface roughness, anisotropic microstructure, and the formation of micro-pores in the …
