Loving Beyond The Human: Anthropocentric And Anthropomorphic Values In The Loving And Hating Of Nonhuman Animals, Stephanie M. Takata-Struble

Between the Species

I offer an account of the centrality of values to moral experience and the ways in which value disorder characterizes our relationships with nonhuman animals. To do this, I first provide an account of Max Scheler’s phenomenology of values, including the hierarchy of values, and loving and hating as value orientations. Drawing on this account, I map out two value orientations specific to our relationships with animals—anthropocentrism and anthropomorphism. Within these two value orientations, I detail three specific forms of valuation—gustatory, cosmetic, and anthropomorphic substitution—which demonstrate the ways in which people’s naïve love for the nonhuman animal is often, phenomenologically, …

This idea sheet is based on a 2024 gathering and subsequent outreach to 15 leaders and community members in Daggett County. As the smallest county in Utah, this represents a higher participation percentage than most.

Girls and women face challenges unique to the area in which they live, and the goal of this gathering was to identify those barriers and determine strategies and initiatives that local leaders and residents can implement to address them. This document includes recommendations in the following areas: home and family, education, health and wellbeing, business and economics, and culture and community engagement.

The auto-combustion method synthesized CuO NPs and Ag/CuO NPs. The Ag/CuO NPs were analyzed using Fourier-transform infrared, X-ray difraction, scanning electron microscope, and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy instrumental analyses. The energy band gap, as determined by DRS properties, decreases from 3.82 to 3.50 eV for pure CuO and 10% Ag/CuO NPs, respectively. The photodegradation efciency of Rhodamine-B & Carmine by 10% Ag/CuO NPs was nearly 98.9 and 97.8%, respectively. Antimicrobial trials revealed that the antimicrobial efficacy of Ag/CuO NPs at several dosages (20, 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 µg/mL) against human pathogens was initially assessed using the agar well-diffusion method, …

The identification of optimal candidate genes from large-scale blood transcriptomic data is crucial for developing targeted assays to monitor immune responses. Here, we introduce a novel, optimized large language model (LLM)-based approach for prioritizing candidate biomarkers from blood transcriptional modules. Focusing on module M14.51 from the BloodGen3 repertoire, we implemented a multi-step LLM-driven workflow. Initial high-throughput screening used GPT-4, Claude 3, and Claude 3.5 Sonnet to score and rank the module's constituent genes across six criteria. Top candidates then underwent high-resolution scoring using Consensus GPT, with concurrent manual fact-checking and, when needed, iterative refinement of the scores based on user …

Jenn Oliva, Professor of Law and Val Nolan Faculty Fellow, has been elected to the American Law Institute, the organization announced yesterday (Oct. 4).

She becomes the 18th member of the Indiana University Maurer School of Law faculty to earn the prestigious recognition.

“This is a tremendous honor for Professor Oliva and we are proud to have her on our faculty,” said Indiana Law Dean Christiana Ochoa, who holds an ex officio role with the ALI. “Since Jenn joined us in 2023 she’s quickly become an invaluable member of the Maurer community and we’re thrilled to see her recognized.”

Freshwater mussels are native bivalve mollusks and an important indicator species for water quality. Over 65% of the species present in North America are imperiled.

In the West, mussel populations are generally declining, and the western ridged mussel (Gonidea angulata), native to the Pacific Northwest, is under review by the US Fish & Wildlife Service for Endangered Species Act listing.

Just as scientists use dendrochronology to determine the climate conditions of a forest using tree rings, sclerochronology can be used to determine the condition of stream habitats using growth bands stored within mussel shells.

In salamanders, successful reproduction requires communication. Most male salamanders communicate to the female during courtship via a gland on their chin, called the mental gland. The sexually dimorphic mental gland in the dermis of the lower jaw is typical in males of species in the family Plethodontidae and is considered ancestral to the family (Sever et al. 2016). The mental gland consists of an aggregate of modified granular glands (MGGs) that produce pheromones (Houck and Sever, 1994; Rupp and Sever, 2018). Introduction Physical therapy (PT) is recommended as a primary treatment for low back pain (LBP), a common and impactful musculoskeletal condition after limb loss. The purpose of this brief report is to report the duration and cost of PT care, and subsequent escalation of care events, for LBP in service members with and without limb loss. Materials and Methods This was a retrospective cohort, descriptive study. This paper reports on the performance of the prepared Sugarcane Bagasse Fibres – Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes (SBF–MWCNTs) composite for simultaneous removal of Crystal Violet (CV), Pb(II), Cr(III), Cd(II) and Co(II) from the effluent using a fixed bed method. Different composites of SBF–MWCNTs biosorbent were prepared from mixtures of varied ratios of SBF and MWCNTs at 25 °C. The SBF–MWCNTs materials were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Crystallinity index and swelling behaviour of the materials were also determined. In IEC-61850-based digital substations, the protection IED’s performance is dependent on merging unit’s vendor implementation, communication networks, and measurement circuit’s health conditions. As the process bus Sampled Value(SV) enables the availability of all sensor data on a communication network, this paper proposes a Backup Subscription scheme (BSS) for a transformer differential protection (87T, PDIF) function. BSS utilizes sensor data in digital substations to achieve a flexible protection scheme using a dynamic subscription feature. Study abroad programs have become increasingly popular in recent years as vehicles to prepare students for the global work environment. This paper describes a perspective on how to maximize teaching effectiveness in these programs via developing personal relationships. Based on the teaching of a Principles of Marketing course in Florence, Italy, the author discusses how the special characteristics of the study abroad program enabled the formation of deep faculty-student and peer relationships. Fire is a major disturbance affecting ecosystems globally, but its impact on mutualisms has received minimal attention. Here, we use a long-term field experiment to investigate the impact of different fire regimes on globally important ant–honeydew and ant–extrafloral nectar (EFN) mutualistic interactions in an Australian tropical savanna. These interactions provide ants with a key energy source, while their plant and hemipteran hosts receive protection services. Caseous calcification of the mitral valve annulus is a rare variant of mitral annular calcification making up about 0.6% of cases. The diagnosis of CCMA has previously been challenging but has come a long way with further advancements in cardiac multimodal imaging.
