ETDs in repositories are nothing new, but what do you do when starting from zero, and your institution has not actively collected or archived student ETDs?

This was the scenario at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Being a relatively new institution growing out of several smaller local colleges, the codification of administrative workflows as related to ETDs took the long trail.

This talk will discuss our approach to discovering our own uncollected content, engaging ProQuest as an unexpected partner, and going from zero to fairly complete in about a year.

Mastering legal citation means understanding multiple citation systems. In addition to the Bluebook, fifty states produce fifty sets of laws, and each state decides how it wants its own materials to be cited. For case law, the Bluebook advises authors to use the West Reporter citations if available, but to add public domain citations if a state uses them. However, a state’s internal rules may require citation to the official state reports. All this creates a maze of rules that practitioners need to follow. CMOS Image Sensors (CIS) are the most widely used visual devices in the modern sensing industry, playing a crucial role in converting light signals to digital images. In practical applications, CIS serve as the front end of a vision system, which also includes Image Signal Processors (ISPs) and vision algorithms before delivering the final output to end consumers. The quality of a vision system depends on the metrics used by the end consumer to evaluate the received images. Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata), Tennessee’s state wildflower, is valued for its ecological role as a pollinator plant and its historical significance to the Cherokee, making it an ideal candidate for green roofs that support biodiversity and urban sustainability. This study examined the feasibility of growing passionflower on a green roof and tested whether commercial fertilizer (Miracle-Gro) or natural compost would lead to greater growth compared to no fertilizer. Twelve plants were divided equally into three treatment groups: control, Miracle-Gro, and compost, with growth measurements taken weekly from September to November. Results suggest that passionflowers treated with Miracle-Gro achieved the most growth, …

Spinal Muscular Atrophy with Respiratory Distress (SMARD1) is a lethal infantile disease, characterized by the loss of motor neurons leading to muscular atrophy, diaphragmatic paralysis, and weakness in the trunk and limbs. Mutations in IGHMBP2, a ubiquitously expressed DNA/RNA helicase, have been shown to cause a wide spectrum of motor neuron disease. Though mutations in IGHMBP2 are mostly associated with SMARD1, milder alleles cause the axonal neuropathy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2S (CMT2S), and some null alleles are potentially a risk factor for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan includes six rural counties and one Tribal Nation. The region is characterized by long winters, legacies of the extractive mining economy, and the infrastructural features of extreme rurality, including aging housing and low health service density. The region also faces exceptionally high electricity prices. There is limited research on the public health implications of energy service disruption in rural regions resulting from the increasing intensity and frequency of weather events caused by climate change. The Relationship Between Language Use And Conspiracy Beliefs, Isabelle Van Der Vegt, Bettina Rottweiler, Paul Gill

We know little about the individuals who share conspiracy beliefs online. By examining their language use, we can gain more insight into this population. We find that several language markers are associated with higher levels of conspiracy mentality, that is, a generic tendency to engage in conspiracy thinking. This has important implications for countering the impact of conspiracy theories and preventing support for election violence, a pathway we examine in a separate report.

Research has indicated that food accessibility and cultural food preference play a crucial role in creating a sense of belonging for international students in higher education. The recent Sodexo survey (2019) indicated 83% of international students feel that accessibility to cultural food was an important factor, and 61% indicated that not having access to food that is familiar makes them feel less connected to the community. Bear Essentials is an online newsletter published by the Student Activities Council of Des Moines Area Community College. The newsletter was established in early 2020 when DMACC closed its facilities due to the coronavirus pandemic. The newsletter covers topics such as upcoming virtual activities and events, college resources, and community service opportunities. When asked about the origins of the newsletter, Student Activities Advisor Erin Smith said, "We wanted students to know they were not alone, the entire DMACC Community was coming together to help support one another in any way possible."

Background/Objectives: Nephrolithiasis (kidney stones) is a frequently occurring urologic condition resulting in significant patient morbidity and healthcare costs. Despite the higher prevalence of metabolic risk factors for nephrolithiasis among Black women, there have been few epidemiologic studies of kidney stones focusing on this group.

Methods: We describe demographic and health characteristics, diagnostics, and metabolic profiles of US Black women with self-reported kidney stones. The women were participants in the Black Women’s Health Study (BWHS), a large prospective cohort of US Black women (median age 38 years) begun in 1995.

In a dynamic healthcare industry, aligning the goals and objectives of hospitals and physicians through integration has been suggested to influence performance. Physicians’ leadership and active involvement in governance can direct resource usage, Electronic Health Record (EHR) implementation, price negotiation, better coordination, and continuity of services for patients, thus affecting performance. This study aimed to examine the relationship between physician integration and hospital performance, investigating both financial and quality outcomes. We used a longitudinal study design. Our sample was hospital-level data from 2014 to 2019, which contained 6000 U.S. hospital-year observations. The dependent variables were quality outcomes (readmission rates) and …
