Soybean dwarf virus (SbDV; family Tombusviridae, genus Luteovirus, species Luteovirus glycinis) is an RNA plant virus that is transmitted solely by aphids in a persistent, circulative and non-propagative manner. SbDV causes significant losses in cultivated Fabaceae, especially in subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum) pastures of mainland Australia. SbDV isolates are classified into four phenotypically distinguishable strains: YP, YS, DP, and DS. Y and D strains differ primarily in their host range, and P and S strains in their primary vector species. Genetically, Y and D strains separate into two clades in every genomic region except for …

This study involved 300 patients, comprising 113 females and 187 males, from six X-ray units. The study focused on evaluating the patient dose for common X-ray examinations at selected hospitals in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, Tanzania. The achieved results were compared with previous studies and Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRLs). Entrance surface air kerma (ESAK) was calculated for chest posteroanterior (PA), cervical spine anteroposterior/lateral (AP/Lat), abdomen anteroposterior (AP), and lumbar spine anteroposterior/lateral (AP/LAT) examinations. In the current study we evaluated an afterschool nutrition education programme, called Vetri Cooking Lab (VCL), for promoting healthy and diverse eating habits among at-risk children in the Greater Philadelphia area. To understand potential programme impacts, we conducted a longitudinal analysis of survey data collected before and after participation in VCL. Main study included cooking confidence, cooking knowledge, changes in dietary consumption behaviours, and changes in vegetable preferences. Participants included students in grades 3-11 enrolled in VCL during the 2018-19 school year at VCL sites (n = 60) throughout Philadelphia, PA, and Camden, NJ. Methadone, a well-known drug used for pain control and as a treatment for opioid addiction, can cause arrhythmias, including torsades de pointes (TdP), which may progress to ventricular fibrillation and sudden death. We present a case of a middle-aged woman with a long history of methadone use who presented to the emergency department after experiencing cardiac arrest at home. During her hospitalization, she experienced multiple episodes of TdP that improved with isoproterenol and potassium correction. The initial diagnosis was methadone-induced prolonged QT. However, even with discontinuation of methadone, her QTc remained prolonged. Congenital long QT syndrome was suspected, and genetic …

The implicit association test (IAT) provides a sensitive measure of attitudes to social dimensions such as race, gender or disability using a response speed procedure. The automatisation deficit account of dyslexia attributes the reading (and broader) difficulties of dyslexic people to reduced speed and strength of stimulus–response habit formation and, therefore, predicts reduced implicit bias for individuals with dyslexia. This novel prediction was tested using the ‘Project Implicit’ IAT database on attitudes to disability. Data from over 460,000 respondents was analysed, including 22,747 with physical disability (PD), 14,700 with dyslexia, and 1721 with dyscalculia. The dyslexia group did indeed show …

Historically, Black communities have often been discussed in the context of crime and poverty; however, most Black communities were flourishing neighborhoods with businesses, churches, and schools. Most of the literature related to gentrification and displacement does not address the root causes of the disappearance of Black communities, which generally centers on policies, legislation, force-outs, economic development, and racial disparities. This case study aimed to explore the displacement of a suburban historically Black community in St. Louis County, Missouri. During development, inflammation or tissue injury, macrophages engulf multiple apoptotic cells via efferocytosis to maintain tissue homeostasis. The mechanism by which macrophages rapidly adapt their transcription for continuous corpse uptake is not well understood. Transcriptional pause/release is a conserved mechanism, in which RNA polymerase (Pol) II initiates transcription for 20-60 nucleotides, is paused for minutes to hours and is then released to the elongation phase. We show that macrophages quickly use Pol II pause/release upon encountering corpses to trigger a rapid transcriptional response. This mechanism is essential for continuous efferocytosis but does not affect other forms of phagocytosis. Genomic data …

Plasmopara viticola is considered one of the most damaging grapevine pathogens, costing growers millions of dollars in losses. Despite the discovery of resistance to P. viticola (RPV) loci in grapevines to combat this pathogen, recent research shows that P. viticola can rapidly adapt virulence on some RPV loci, reducing their effectiveness. This thesis explored two strategies to understand how P. viticola adapted to two resistance loci of moderate strength, RPV3.1 and RPV10.3, by identification and characterization of P. viticola genomic regions showing a high selective sweep. Alveolar epithelial cells provide oxygen transport and act as a first line of defense against pathogens and environmental triggers that disturb tissue homeostasis. However, in the context of epithelial injury, fibrotic and inflammatory lung diseases develop where regenerative responses may become dysregulated or recurrently engaged. One cause of lung injury is infection with cytopathic respiratory viruses such as influenza and SARS-CoV-2 viruses, which induce lung inflammation, tissue damage, and epithelial cell injury and loss. Exposure to cancer therapies is associated with an increased risk of clonal hematopoiesis (CH). The objective of our study was to investigate the genesis and evolution of CH after cancer therapy. In this prospective study, we undertook error-corrected duplex DNA sequencing in blood samples collected before and at 2 time points after chemoradiation in patients with esophageal or lung cancer recruited from 2013 to 2018. We applied a customized workflow to identify the earliest changes in CH mutation count and clone size and determine their association with clinical outcomes. Chronic alcohol use leads to metabolic dysfunction in adipose tissue. The underlying mechanisms and the contribution of alcohol-induced adipose tissue dysfunction to systemic metabolic dysregulation are not well understood. In our previous studies, we found that chronic alcohol feeding induces mesenteric lymphatic leakage, perilymphatic adipose tissue (PLAT) inflammation, and local insulin resistance in rats. The goal of this study was to further explore the link between alcohol-induced lymphatic leakage and PLAT immunometabolic dysregulation, locally and systemically, using in vivo and ex vivo approaches. Objectives: One of the behavioral problems strongly associated with emotional dysregulation (ED) in ASD is emotional outbursts (EOs) characterized by a pattern of challenging behavior that varies across individuals and across time.
