Background: With the recent surge in the utilization of electronic health records for cognitive decline, the research community has turned its attention to conducting fine-grained analyses of dementia onset using advanced techniques. Previous works have mostly focused on machine learning-based prediction of dementia, lacking the analysis of dementia progression and its associations with risk factors over time. The black box nature of machine learning models has also raised concerns regarding their uncertainty and safety in decision making, particularly in sensitive domains like healthcare.

An Age-Structured Model For The Effects Of Temperature And Rainfall On The Transmission Dynamics Of Malaria, Alanus Mapunda, Eunice Mureithi, Nyimvua Shaban

Tanzania Journal of Science

This study has investigated the impact of temperature and rainfall on the transmission dynamics of malaria using an age-structured population model, with a class of pregnant women. The equilibrium solutions have been analyzed, and numerical simulations carried out. The results show that there are significantly high rates of malaria infections for the temperature and rainfall ranging between (23.53 0C − 39.80 0C) and (14.82 mm − 38.44 mm) respectively. The results have shown that, the most affected populations are children up to five years old and pregnant women, and that decreasing the rate of transplacental transmission increases the number of …

This article briefly explains the correlation between Ethiopia’s ambitious GERD project and the potential shift in power distribution in the region known as the Horn of Africa. The GERD (Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam) is a hydroelectric dam designed to drive economic growth by harnessing the Nile River as its core. Focusing on a regional-level analysis, this article will examine the relationship between the completion of the project and the shift in power distribution between Egypt as the local status-quo power, and Ethiopia as the regional challenger. BACKGROUND: Although the position of a pediatric cardiology chief is often seen as the apex of one's academic career, its roles, responsibilities, and qualifications are not well defined in the literature. This study was done to gain further insight of the role and attributes of a pediatric cardiology chief by surveying those who are currently serving the position across North American centers. METHODS AND RESULTS: This was a mixed-methods study with a survey given to North American pediatric cardiology chiefs at programs with fellowship training programs. An Academic Honor Code was passed by the Academic Senate on April 25, 2008, and in the same time period by the Student Government Association. That Academic Honor Code contained the major issues associated with student dishonesty and an appeal process, although there were sections of the code that were not clear. Also, the appeal process did not have a form by which the appeal process could be followed and documented. Those issues, along with several others, were addressed in a revised Academic Honor code that was approved by the Academic Senate on March 13, 2015. These revisions replace DOC …

The AACN identified the need to attract students from underrepresented groups, including men. According to the results of the 2020 National Nursing Workforce Survey, only 9.4% of registered nurses in the United States are men, a 2.8% increase from 2013 (Smiley et al., 2021). Marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) can have varied presentations and pathologic features, including high Ki-67 expression ( > 20%) as well as increased numbers of large B cells (LC). However, there are limited data available demonstrating the prognostic significance of these variables in patients with MZL. In this multi-institutional retrospective cohort study of patients with MZL treated at 10 centers, we evaluated the association between the presence of Ki-67 expression and increased LCs on survival and risk of histologic transformation (HT). Background: Obesity is a growing epidemic with non-surgical/non-pharmacological interventions having only nominal and transient effects on excess weight. Those persistent shortcomings are associated with minimal understandings of impacts of treatment-associated changes in psychological variables and their relationships. Women of lower incomes have high rates of obesity and might have increased difficulties accessing evidence-based programs.

Methods: Women with obesity of lower- to lower-middle incomes participated in 6-month community-based treatments in the United States emphasizing either self-regulatory skills development (behavioral methods group: n = 63) or typical education in exercise and healthy dietary practices (education group: n = 48).

Woody biomass serves as a renewable resource for various industries, including pulp and paper production, construction, biofuels, and electricity generation. However, the molecular mechanisms behind biomass traits are poorly understood, which significantly curtails the speed and efficiency of their improvement. We used activation tagging to discover genes that can positively affect tree biomass-associated traits. We generated and screened under greenhouse conditions a population of 2,700 independent activation tagging lines. A total of 761 lines, which had significantly and positively affected at least one biomass-associated trait, were discovered. Purpose: There is a need for a bi-directional Clinical Education (CE) process performance assessment to establish a meaningful relationship between the Clinical Site (CS) and the University partner, one that assesses performance outcomes and stakeholder needs. While students evaluate clinical instructors (CI) and CS, no formal mechanism exists for CS and universities to evaluate each other, especially concerning administrative workflows and goal alignment within the CE placement process. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential associations between serum zinc and oxidative stress levels and periodontal inflamed surface area (PISA).Materials and methods: This study included 90 patients divided into three groups: a periodontitis group (P; n = 30), a gingivitis group (G; n = 30), and a periodontal health group (PH; n = 30).
