Reel Racing: The Geography Of The United States Lawn Mower Racing Association, H. Jason Combs
Reel Racing: The Geography Of The United States Lawn Mower Racing Association, H. Jason Combs
The Geographical Bulletin
The United States Lawn Mower Racing Association (USLMRA) formed on April Fools’ Day 1992 and now has approximately 500 members and a national racing circuit. This paper examines the geography of the USLMRA as well as the reasons for its expansion. Professional lawn mower racing’s popularity is somewhat in response to NASCAR’s commercialization and nationalization efforts. Lawn mower racing is more affordable than stock car racing and provides an outlet for many adrenaline-enriched and mechanically inclined individuals. The national circuit runs through traditional stock car country—from Texas and Florida to Illinois, Wisconsin, and Ohio. The majority of USLMRA members and …

Ecological Marginalization And Hill Tribe Security In Northern Thailand, Richard A. Crooker
Ecological Marginalization And Hill Tribe Security In Northern Thailand, Richard A. Crooker
The Geographical Bulletin
In recent decades, Thai elites have ecologically marginalized hill tribe farmers in northern Thailand. A region-wide population boom has fueled a ‘land grab’ by the elites and forced hill tribe farmers to live on less land with few off-farm options. The marginalized farmers are less secure in their livelihoods, and as a result, there has been conflict over resources between them and governmental authorities and ethnic Thais. This paper analyzes the hill tribes’ marginalization in order to assess the risk of heightened social conflict in the region. I chose hill tribe villages in the Mae Sa Valley as a “best-case” …
Environment And Security Conflicts: The U.S. Military In Okinawa, Jonathan Taylor
Environment And Security Conflicts: The U.S. Military In Okinawa, Jonathan Taylor
The Geographical Bulletin
This paper explores the effects of ongoing environmental issues related to U.S. military bases in Okinawa. Okinawa’s history, particularly the damage it suffered during World War II has led to an active anti-military movement on the island. The U.S. bases exist in a context of anti-military and environmental movements which seek to dislodge the bases from their current location. At the same time the U.S. military bases have had both direct and indirect effects upon Okinawa’s environment: some positive, though many negative. Some steps the U.S. military could take to lessen its environmental impacts upon Okinawa are suggested.

Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning For Smart Community Energy Management, Patrick Wilk, Ning Wang, Jie Li
Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning For Smart Community Energy Management, Patrick Wilk, Ning Wang, Jie Li
Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research
This paper investigates a Local Strategy-Driven Multi-Agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (LSD-MADDPG) method for demand-side energy management systems (EMS) in smart communities. LSD-MADDPG modifies the conventional MADDPG framework by limiting data sharing during centralized training to only discretized strategic information. During execution, it relies solely on local information, eliminating post-training data exchange. This approach addresses critical challenges commonly faced by EMS solutions serving dynamic, increasing-scale communities, such as communication delays, single-point failures, scalability, and nonstationary environments. By leveraging and sharing only strategic information among agents, LSD-MADDPG optimizes decision-making while enhancing training efficiency and safeguarding data privacy—a critical concern in the …

Temporal Variations In And Predictive Values Of Abg Results Prior To In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest, Mina Attin, Jie Rin, Chad Cross, Sidath Kapukotuwa, Ryan Shao, Peter G. Kaufmann, C.D. (Joey) Lin, Kim Arcoleo
Nursing Faculty Research
In-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) has been understudied relative to out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Further, studies of IHCA have mainly focused on a limited number of pre-arrest patient characteristics (e.g., demographics, number and types of comorbidities). Arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis, one of the most common diagnostic tests for assessing and managing critically or acutely ill hospitalized patients, reflects pathophysiological changes associated with adverse events or complications, including IHCA. Yet the predictive and prognostic values of patterns of pre-arrest ABG parameters for IHCA have not been fully studied. The purpose of this retrospective pilot cohort study was to investigate temporal variations in …
Comprehensive Framework For Collaborative Decision-Making In Evaluating Computer Network Security Using Interval Neutrosophic Information, Wenbao Qiao
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
Computer network security (CNS) evaluation is crucial for protecting information assets and maintaining the stable operation of network systems. Through this evaluation, potential threats and vulnerabilities within the network can be systematically identified, effectively preventing possible cyber-attacks and data breaches. Additionally, network security evaluation helps enterprises and organizations allocate security resources appropriately, enhancing their ability to respond to emergencies and ensuring business continuity and data integrity. In summary, network security evaluation is one of the foundational tasks for achieving continuous, secure, and stable network operations. The CNS evaluation is multiple-attribute group decision making (MAGDM). Then, the generalized TODIM(GTODIM) approach has …
Improving Teaching Quality Assessment In Smart Classrooms For English Majors: An Integrated Double-Valued Neutrosophic Decision-Making Model, Lu Luo, Cong Wang
Improving Teaching Quality Assessment In Smart Classrooms For English Majors: An Integrated Double-Valued Neutrosophic Decision-Making Model, Lu Luo, Cong Wang
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
The evaluation of multimedia-based college English teaching aims to assess the impact of multimedia technology on teaching quality and student learning outcomes. With the introduction of multimedia, classroom interactivity is enhanced, and students' interest and engagement are increased. Additionally, multimedia provides more opportunities for self-directed learning, helping students reinforce knowledge outside the classroom. However, the evaluation must focus on the alignment of technology with teaching objectives and whether the use of multimedia truly improves students' language skills and classroom efficiency. The evaluation of smart classroom teaching quality for English majors in universities is a multi-attribute decision-making (MADM) problem. Recently, methods …
The Public In Action: The Potential For Public Inquiries To Realize Deliberative Democracy A Case Study Of The Mass Casualty Commission, Grace Bryson
Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies
Public inquiries have the potential to promote deliberative democracy. However, the current structure and procedures employed in public inquiries do not promote this goal. Rather, the procedures are based in adversarial methods that do not align with the diverse functions of public inquiries. This paper addresses these procedural shortcomings and seeks to encourage more fulsome public participation. Using the Mass Casualty Commission in Nova Scotia as a case study, this paper proposes procedural changes that could enhance the role of the public in future inquiries to lead to transformative and beneficial policy change.

Consumer Possessed: A Comment On Assessing Belk’S “Possessions And The Extended Self”, A. Fuat Firat
Marketing Faculty Publications
While outstanding in observing the contemporary experience of being a “consumer” to become a “canonical article” in consumer research, as Thompson deftly analyzes, Belk’s “Possessions and the Extended Self” is subject to varied traps of remaining within the “mainstream marketing’s ideological boat.” This commentary attempts to highlight these ideological traps as we hopefully escape contemporary capitalism’s system of production of consumer subjectivity.

Collagen (Col) is commonly used as a natural biomaterial for biomedical applications. Although Col I is the most prevalent col type employed, many collagen types work together in vivo to confer function and biological activity. Thus, blending collagen types can better recapitulate many native environments. This work investigates how hydrogel properties can be tuned through blending collagen types (col I/II and col I/III) and by varying polymerization temperatures. Col I/II results in poorly developed fibril networks, which softened the gels, especially at lower polymerization temperatures. Conversely, col I/III hydrogels exhibit well-connected fibril networks with localized areas of fine fibrils and …

Background
High-risk strains of HPV are known to cause cervical cancer. Multiple clinical studies have emphasized that smoking and drinking are critical risk factors for cervical cancer and its high-grade precursors. In this study, we investigated if smoking and/or drinking augment the molecular mechanisms of cervical carcinogenesis and defined a potential therapeutic approach for their attenuation.
Methods
The impact of benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) and/or ethanol (EtOH) exposure on cervical cancer cells was assessed by measuring changes in their cell migration and invasion characteristics. Expression of HPV16 E6/E7, NF-κB, cytokines, and inflammation mediators was determined using qRT-PCR, immunoblotting, ELISA, luciferase reporter assay, …

The primary goal of this paper is to introduce a novel method for mining frequent and interesting items by incorporating correlation analysis between two items in an uncertain transactional database using the OWA operator. The work is further expanded by proposing two additional methods for mining frequent and interesting items, utilizing fuzzy means and the OWA operator along with multiple correlation analysis for more than two items in uncertain transactional databases. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is evaluated by running the algorithms on both standard and example datasets, with results compared to the traditional probabilistic approach for identifying frequent …
