Revealing Grounding Zone And Subglacial Processes At Cosgrove Ice Shelf: Seafloor Analogs For The Modern Antarctic Ice Sheet, Rosemary E. Burkhalter-Castro
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The future loss of ice in West Antarctica is one of the biggest uncertainties in projections of global sea level rise. The West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS), home to Cosgrove Ice Shelf (CIS), contains enough ice to raise global sea level by more than three meters if it collapsed completely. Accurately predicting how much sea level change may occur from a future collapse of WAIS is of particular interest to low-lying, heavily populated coastal areas such as Florida. For this reason, it is important to understand the processes underpinning rapid changes and retreat at marine-terminating glaciers in the Amundsen Sea. …

This paper presents a study of generalized polyhedral convexity under basic operations on multifunctions. We address the preservation of generalized polyhedral convexity under sums and compositions of multifunctions, the domains and ranges of generalized polyhedral convex multifunctions, and the direct and inverse images of sets under such mappings. Then we explore the class of optimal value functions defined by a generalized polyhedral convex objective function and a generalized polyhedral convex constrained mapping. The new results provide a framework for representing the relative interior of the graph of a generalized polyhedral convex multifunction in terms of the relative interiors of its …

Revisiting Marcuse On Repressive Tolerance: A Twenty-First Century Retrospective, David Ingram
Revisiting Marcuse On Repressive Tolerance: A Twenty-First Century Retrospective, David Ingram
Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Herbert Marcuse’s essay Repressive Tolerance (RP) has been praised by the Left and vilified by the Right for its alleged promotion of censorship targeting reactionary opinions and actions. I argue that this interpretation of the text is mistaken. According to my alternative reading of the text, RP should be understood as an exercise in provocation and irony aimed at defending civil disobedience and dissent. Marcuse’s defense of dissent, however, appeals to a critique of pure tolerance that exposes the unavoidably partisan practice of tolerance, which invariably favors the reigning undemocratic status quo. The choice whether to tolerate in a manner …
Developmental-Status-Aware Transcriptional Decomposition Establishes A Cell State Panorama Of Human Cancers, Yikai Luo, Han Liang
Developmental-Status-Aware Transcriptional Decomposition Establishes A Cell State Panorama Of Human Cancers, Yikai Luo, Han Liang

Background: Cancer cells evolve under unique functional adaptations that unlock transcriptional programs embedded in adult stem and progenitor-like cells for progression, metastasis, and therapeutic resistance. However, it remains challenging to quantify the stemness-aware cell state of a tumor based on its gene expression profile.
Methods: We develop a developmental-status-aware transcriptional decomposition strategy using single-cell RNA-sequencing-derived tissue-specific fetal and adult cell signatures as anchors. We apply our method to various biological contexts, including developing human organs, adult human tissues, experimentally induced differentiation cultures, and bulk human tumors, to benchmark its performance and to reveal novel biology of entangled developmental signaling in …

Fetal exposures to many drugs of abuse, e.g., opioids and alcohol (EtOH), are associated with adverse neurodevelopmental problems in early childhood, including abnormalities in activity of the serotonin (5HT) transporter (SERT), which transports 5HT across the placenta. Little is known about the effects of these drugs on SERT expression. Pregnant women who used EtOH or opioids were compared to gestational age-matched controls using a structured questionnaire to determine prenatal substance exposure. Following elective pregnancy termination, placental membranous vesicles and exosomes were prepared from first and second trimester human placentas. Changes in EtOH- or opioid-exposed placental SERT expression and modifications were …

165 Conover Street Tenant Association V. Thompson
All Decisions
In this HP proceeding, the tenant association successfully moved for partial summary judgment to compel the landlord to correct Housing Maintenance Code violations. The court found no valid defense for the landlord's vague claims of completed repairs, which lacked supporting evidence. The landlord was ordered to correct the violations as listed in the violation status reports within statutory timeframes, and the motion to dismiss defenses was denied as moot.

This HP action involves a vacate order due to building disrepair. The landlords sought an extension to complete necessary repairs and avoid civil penalties. Petitioners argued that the landlords had delayed filing permits, exacerbating the delay in repairs. The court granted the landlords' motion for an extension to complete the work by June 30, 2024. The parties will have a hearing to determine if penalties should be imposed for failure to meet the deadline. The case highlights the complexities of compliance with city building regulations and consent orders.

All Decisions
In this holdover proceeding, the landlord claimed that the tenant failed to renew a rent-stabilized lease at the legal rent. The court held that the landlord established the renewal offer compliant with the Rent Stabilization Code, while the tenant's claims about prior rents were dismissed due to the Regina ruling limiting review of historical rents absent fraud. The court issued a final judgment of possession for the landlord but allowed a 30-day cure period for the tenant to sign the lease, and it denied a monetary judgment for use and occupancy due to prior payment. From the tenant's attorney: "In …

Evaluating The Inclusion Of Evidence-Based Reading Practices In First-Grade Curricula: The Role Of District Size, Matthew J. Lembo
Evaluating The Inclusion Of Evidence-Based Reading Practices In First-Grade Curricula: The Role Of District Size, Matthew J. Lembo
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Abstract
This dissertation investigated the extent to which five dependent variables were included in the first-grade reading curriculum and whether district size played a role in their inclusion. This study’s mixed-methods approach incorporated descriptive statistics, histograms, confidence intervals, and chi-squared analyses to assess curriculum patterns across small, medium, and large districts. The research also explored the relationship between district size and the consistent inclusion of key instructional variables related to the science of reading. Findings suggest that, although not statistically significant, district size plays a potential and has a consistent role in the implementation of these five variables. Medium-sized districts …

Taking advantage of the extremely small size of the gold nanodisk electrode, the single hydrogen nanobubble generated on the surface of the nanoelectrode was studied to evaluate its hydrogen evolution performance. It was found that compared with the bare gold nanodisk electrode, the bubble formation potential of the gold nanodisk electrode modified with tungsten disulfide quantum dots (WS2 QDs) on the surface was more positive, indicating that its hydrogen evolution activity was higher. Microdynamic model analysis shows that the average standard rate constant of the rate-determining step of the hydrogen evolution reaction of gold nanoelectrodes modified with WS2 …

Strontium-90, a highly radioactive isotope, accumulates within the food chain and skeletal structure, posing significant risks to human health. There is a critical need for a sensitive detection strategy for Strontium-90 in complex environmental samples. Here, solid-state nanochannels, modified with metal-organic frameworks (MOF) and specific aptamers, were engineered for highly sensitive detection of strontium ion (Sr2+). The synergistic effect between the reduced effective diameter of the nanochannels due to MOF and the specific binding of Sr2+ by aptamers amplifies the difference in ionic current signals, enhancing detection sensitivity significantly. The MOF-modified nanochannels exhibit highly sensitive detection of …

Resilience in nursing medication administration practice: a systematic review with narrative synthesis. OBJECTIVE: Little is known about how nurses adapt medication administration practices to preserve safety. The capacity to adapt and respond before harm occurs has been labelled 'resilience'. Current evidence examining medication safety largely focuses on errors and what goes wrong. This review aimed to synthesise evidence for the application of resilience principles and practices in nursing medication administration. DESIGN: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guided the review, which was registered with PROSPERO. DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsychINFO and CINAHL databases were searched from 14 …

Place-based socio-economic and racial inequities contribute to health disparities among people with HIV (PWH). We used geographic ecological momentary assessment (GEMA) methodologies to explore the interplay between psychosocial outcomes in daily diaries and community spatial measures among PWH in New Orleans. PWH (N = 69) were recruited from a clinic-based cohort study. Micro-longitudinal data were collected via smartphone-based daily diaries and geospatial tracking over 14 days. First, correlations were run between diary derived outcomes (e.g., feeling safe in current location, stress), and spatial measures (e.g., violent crime, alcohol outlets, and vacant lots) within a half-mile buffer around each diary point …

PURPOSE: To evaluate how build orientation affects the fabrication trueness of additively manufactured implant-supported complete arch prostheses by comparing them to subtractively manufactured high-impact polymer-based prostheses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An edentulous maxillary model with four implants at canine and first molar regions bilaterally was digitized (ATOS Core 80 5MP) to design a reference implant-supported complete arch prosthesis standard tessellation language file (RF-STL). The STL file was used to manufacture prostheses additively in five different orientations according to the build platform (AM-0, 0-degree; AM-15, 15-degree; AM-30, 30-degree; AM-45, 45-degree; AM-90, 90-degree) or subtractively (SM-HIP, control) (n = 10). The prostheses were …

Hungry Beautiful Animals: A Pre-Release Reading Workshop With Professor Matt Halteman, Matthew C. Halteman, Ian Tjoelker, Ella Vanden Berg
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Student leaders Ian Tjoelker and Ella Vanden Berg invited me to do a two session workshop on several chapters of Hungry Beautiful Animals in the Calvin University Student Philosophy Symposium.
Hungry Beautiful Animals frames Halteman’s idea as an opportunity rather than an obligation. “Going vegan” is an incremental journey rather than an identity earned by perfection. This is why Halteman focuses on the distinction between veganism, which implies a perfectionistic state, and “going vegan,” which is aspirational, and something to continually strive towards.

Using A Natural Capital Risk Register To Support The Funding Of Seagrass Habitat Enhancement In Plymouth Sound, Guy Hooper, Matthew Ashley, Tom Mullier, Martin Attrill, Amelia Sturgeon, Zoe Sydenham, Mark Parry, Katey Valentine, Sian Rees
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Seagrass is an important marine habitat that provides benefits to society in the form of ecosystem services. Services include the provision of food via fisheries, the regulation of water quality and the ability to sequester and store carbon. In the UK, seagrass beds are in decline, increasing the risk of ecosystem service loss. Current efforts to protect, restore and create seagrass habitat, beyond spatial management measures, rely on grant funding and donations. Emerging carbon, biodiversity and wider ecosystem service markets offering potential revenue sources could facilitate the enhancement of seagrass habitat at scale. Participation in ecosystem service markets, requires that …

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric condition characterized by recurrent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions) performed to relieve distress related to the obsessions. For patients with severe illness refractory to first-line pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, neurosurgical treatments such as deep brain stimulation (DBS) and stereotactic lesioning are an option. The choice between DBS and lesioning is often driven by patient preference, but these options are not mutually exclusive. Here, the authors highlight the success of one surgical therapy (DBS) after the failure of another (lesioning).
OBSERVATIONS: Two patients with severe, treatment-refractory OCD underwent DBS lead implantation targeting the …

In climate studies, it is crucial to distinguish between changes caused by natural variability and those resulting from external forcing. Here we use a suite of numerical experiments based on the ECCO-Darwin ocean biogeochemistry model to separate the impact of the atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) growth rate and climate on the ocean carbon sink — with a goal of disentangling the space-time variability of the dominant drivers. When globally integrated, the variable atmospheric growth rate and climate exhibit similar magnitude impacts on ocean carbon uptake. At local scales, interannual variability in air-sea CO2 flux is dominated by climate. The implications …

Understanding The Zonal Variability In Projections Of Sahel Precipitation, E. O. Audu, R. D. Dixon, I. Diallo
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The uncertainty in precipitation projections across the Sahel has persisted across generations of climate models. Many projections show a zonal dipole in the sign of precipitation change, with wetting across the Central Sahel and drying across the Western Sahel. We analyze the outputs from an ensemble of current climate models to explain why some produce this dipole and understand the inter-model variability in the transition region for these models. Models projecting the dipole tend to shift the Atlantic Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) to the south, while models that do not tend to shift the ITCZ to the north. We find …
