It Does Not Matter Who You Are, But It Does Matter How You Teach And What You Know, Areej Radhi Alruwaili Dr. Oct 2024

It Does Not Matter Who You Are, But It Does Matter How You Teach And What You Know, Areej Radhi Alruwaili Dr.

Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities

A growing number of studies have explored how students prefer Native English Speaker Teachers (NESTs) (e.g. Elyas & Alghofaili, 2019). On the other hand, research has also emerged to investigate the qualities that can help to develop an effective English teacher (e.g. Tatipang, Manuas, Wuntu, Rorintulus & Lengkoan, 2022). This paper tries to examine English teachers’ attitudes towards native-speakerism and teaching effectiveness, from the perspective of NESTs and Non-native English Speaker Teachers (NNESTs) working in Saudi Arabia. The findings reveal that an effective English teacher, as perceived by the teachers, is flexible, motivated, self-confident and builds rapport with students. Teacher …

The Influence Of Planning And Architectural Styles On The Sustainability Of The City Of Kumasi, Ghana, Elom Ayeke

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

The city of Kumasi that was once dubbed the ‘Garden City of West Africa’ was founded in the late 17th century and served as the seat of government for the medieval Greater Asante Union. It later served as a commercial hub for the British Colony after undergoing massive transformation in the first two decades of the 19th century. Post-independence, the city went through various urban planning projects that mostly targeted social development. The architecture of Kumasi has also been changing through different periods of its history. This article examines the relationship between the evolution of the city of Kumasi through …

Relationship Between Historic Evolution, Urbanization And Mobility In Ibadan, Nigeria, Aisha Adams

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Ibadan is said to be the biggest indigenous city in Nigeria with a population of about 4.04 million, making it the third largest city in the country after Lagos and Kano. Since its founding in 1829, Ibadan has experienced urban evolution that is mostly unguided. With its high fertility rate, population growth and rural-to-urban migration, Ibadan has experienced significant urban sprawl that has resulted in challenges in urban mobility especially to the lower-income earners. This study looks at the relationship between urban planning, urbanization and mobility in the city of Ibadan. The study found that lack of integrated land use …

Clinical Use Of Placebos: Medicine, Neuroscience, Ethics And The Law, Steven B. Perlmutter Oct 2024

Clinical Use Of Placebos: Medicine, Neuroscience, Ethics And The Law, Steven B. Perlmutter

Tennessee Journal of Law and Policy

My patient, a twenty-eight year old woman, presented with a three-week history of constant twitching of her left lower eyelid. She found it distracting and annoying, albeit it did not impair her vision. She had no other ocular symptomatology. Past ocular and medical histories were unremarkable, and she took no medications. She was preoccupied with a toxic divorce, which was traumatizing her eight-year-old son. She noted difficulty falling and staying asleep. Six weeks prior, her internist pronounced her a healthy but stressed woman. My examination revealed left lower orbicularis myokymia, i.e., spontaneous, involuntary twitching of the left lower eyelid. Her …

Missives from Afar: Study Abroad Stories

This summer, I had the privilege of studying at the renowned Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU) in Prague through the Emerson College Prague Program, thanks to financial support from the Let’s Go Fund. The program was intense, requiring rapid pre-production, filming, and editing of original short films. I worked on multiple sets, developing key skills in problem-solving and collaboration. Beyond filmmaking, I formed close bonds with fellow students while exploring Prague’s rich culture. I’m deeply grateful to the Let’s Go Fund for making this transformative experience possible.

The Heroine Archetype, Annabelle L. Nelson Oct 2024

The Heroine Archetype, Annabelle L. Nelson

Heroism Science

Theorists and researchers have documented some of the characteristics of heroes which include humility, endurance, courage, vulnerability, perseverance, and the choice to solve societal problems with moral action. These characteristics help a hero complete a journey derived from Campbell’s The Hero with A Thousand Faces. The journey’s cycle begins with a normal state when a call to adventure moves a person to face tests, rely on helpers and transform the self to solve dilemmas. Identifying with a hero as an archetype can activate a psychodynamic and open awareness for insight and emotional strength. Usually, a hero is seen as non-gender …

Radical Hospitality: Transforming Adjunct Care, Jennifer L. Kritsch, Rachelle Wong, Michael Corke, Ricardo Ramos, Deb Erickson

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

What would it look like to actively connect with others instead of fighting to affirm our differences? Could radical hospitality usher in a way to connect with others? What would a deep connection to adjuncts in an educational community look like? This research intended to document adjunct faculty responses to departmental efforts to better support adjunct faculty based on their expressed needs. Further, the researchers examined literature on the ethic of care, hospitality, invitational theory, and the role that leadership plays in making people feel welcome. The research team also illuminated how radical hospitality/transformative care can redefine the relationships found …

Co-Creating A Culture Circle: A Horizontal Mentoring Model For New Teachers’ Spiritual Formation, Brita E. Beitler Oct 2024

Co-Creating A Culture Circle: A Horizontal Mentoring Model For New Teachers’ Spiritual Formation, Brita E. Beitler

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Teacher retention rates persist as a major area of concern in American schools, compounded by issues like the lack of diversity in teaching and the struggle to recruit and retain a diverse workforce of teachers. Traditional models of mentoring have some success in teacher retention; however, mentoring is not equitably employed across schools. Additionally, it often follows an expert-to-novice framework, failing to consider the unique cultural and spiritual knowledges that inform a teacher’s professional decisions. To address the gap in the research, this qualitative study narrates the ways three beginning teachers engaged in a Freirean culture circle model of mentoring, …

Heal, Not Harm: Embracing A Trauma-Informed Approach As An Act Of Transformative Care, Carrie R. Giboney Wall Oct 2024

Heal, Not Harm: Embracing A Trauma-Informed Approach As An Act Of Transformative Care, Carrie R. Giboney Wall

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Desperate to decrease problematic student behaviors and increase desirable ones, many teachers employ traditional behaviorist models of discipline through the use of rewards or punishments. Although well-meaning and perhaps temporarily effective, these transactional barter systems can do more harm than good, especially for students who are trauma-impacted. By disrupting these practices that can re-traumatize students and embracing trauma-informed practices, teachers can extend transformative care to students and promote healing. The purpose of this qualitative investigation was to explore the manifestations of trauma on student classroom behavior and learning at a Title I public elementary school as well as multipronged elements …

Integrated Care: Transforming Beginning Teachers And Students With Ebd, Amy V. Flagler Oct 2024

Integrated Care: Transforming Beginning Teachers And Students With Ebd, Amy V. Flagler

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

This research examined the experiences and self-efficacy of beginning teachers who work with students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) in the general education classroom. Supported by the work of Bandura (1977, 1997) on teacher self-efficacy and Noddings (2013) on the ethic of care, this qualitative case study implemented semi-structured interviews to gather data on beginning teachers’ confidence and struggles in meeting the needs of students with EBD. The findings revealed beginning teachers of students with EBD are caregivers in need of specific care to meet both their own needs and those of their students. Implications for educator preparation providers …
