Blockade of the immune checkpoints programmed death-1 (PD-1) and cytotoxic lymphocyte antigen 4 has improved outcomes for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), yet most still fail to achieve objective clinical benefit. MET plays key roles in both HCC tumorigenesis and immunosuppressive conditioning; however, inhibition of MET causes upregulation of PD-ligand 1 (PD-L1) suggesting the use of these inhibitors in the context of PD-1 blockade. We sought to investigate across the Hepa1-6, HCA-1 and diethylnitrosamine (DEN) models of HCC whether the combination of more specific type I versus more pleiotropic type II MET inhibitors would confer superior outcomes in combination with …

Background: Aside from the canonical role of PDL1 as a tumour surface-expressed immune checkpoint molecule, tumour-intrinsic PDL1 signals regulate non-canonical immunopathological pathways mediating treatment resistance whose significance, mechanisms, and therapeutic targeting remain incompletely understood. Recent reports implicate tumour-intrinsic PDL1 signals in the DNA damage response (DDR), including promoting homologous recombination DNA damage repair and mRNA stability of DDR proteins, but many mechanistic details remain undefined.

Methods: We genetically depleted PDL1 from transplantable mouse and human cancer cell lines to understand consequences of tumour-intrinsic PDL1 signals in the DNA damage response. We complemented this work with studies of primary human tumours …

Pedagogical Moves Related To Analogy That Support A Unified Understanding Of Eigentheory Concepts In A Quantum Mechanics Class, Kaitlyn Stephens Serbin, Megan Wawro

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

It is beneficial for quantum mechanics students to have a unified understanding of eigentheory concepts, so they can recognize the shared structure of mathematized phenomena from the different quantum mechanical systems of spin, energy, or position and recognize those as instantiations of the same overarching concept. Quantum mechanics instructors should, therefore, provide opportunities for their class community to develop a shared unified understanding of eigentheory concepts. One such opportunity can arise by engaging students in analogizing eigentheory concepts in one context with those from another context. We investigate the pedagogical moves related to analogies that can be used by a …

Impacts Of Phosphate And Residual Free Chlorine On The Precipitation, Stability And Dissolution Of Lead Corrosion Products, Yao Ma

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Lead release from lead pipes into drinking water is a critical threat to public health. Orthophosphate addition is an established method of controlling lead concentrations in tap water. Many phosphate-based inhibitors currently used by utilities are blends of orthophosphate and polyphosphate. Orthophosphate can limit lead release from pipes by forming low-solubility lead phosphate solids on pipe inner surfaces. In contrast, polyphosphate can accelerate lead release by forming soluble lead-phosphate complexes. Due to the potential conversion from polyphosphate to orthophosphate in the distribution system and to complex dynamics of water chemistry in lead service lines (LSLs), the net impact of a …

New Methods To Induce Selectivity In Electrochemical Reactions By Modifying The Electrode Surface, Enqi Feng Oct 2024

New Methods To Induce Selectivity In Electrochemical Reactions By Modifying The Electrode Surface, Enqi Feng

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Organic electrochemistry has proven to be an efficient and green method for synthesis. Although the reactions studied to date have been very successful, there is still much to explore including opportunities to introduce new modes for controlling the selectivity of the reactions. Normally, the selectivity of an electrolysis reaction is based on the redox potential of the substrates. The working potential of an electrode either automatically adjusts to the potential required or is manually set at that potential. This allows for the systematic oxidation or reduction of a series of substrates that have a broad range of oxidation or reduction …

Reputation-Surveillance Model Of Mate Guarding: Community Size And Religious Veiling, Farid Pazhoohi Oct 2024

Reputation-Surveillance Model Of Mate Guarding: Community Size And Religious Veiling, Farid Pazhoohi

School of Psychology

The mate guarding theory of conservative clothing posits that veiling reduces women's physical allure and sexual attractiveness, thereby diminishing men's attraction towards them and deterring potential rivals for a woman's partner. This theory argues that the importance of veiling is influenced by ecological factors in a way that it is of higher importance to control women's sexuality in harsher environments to secure paternal investment. A prediction of this theory is that the importance of veiling should be influenced by community size, where individuals’ reputations, specifically men's, might have different weightings, and their perceived sense of controlling a partner's activity may …
