Austroasiatic Loanwords In Austronesian Languages, Waruno Mahdi
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This paper investigates lexical borrowing from Austroasiatic into Austronesian languages. It does so for the following contact stages and interactions between these languages following the Austronesian overseas dispersal: (Stage 1) early contacts between Austroasiatic and Malayo-Polynesian particularly in the early Neolithic in the area encompassing mainland Southeast Asia, Northwest Kalimantan, and Sumatra, often resulting in the transmission of faunal terms; (Stage 2) interactions between speakers of Mon-Khmer and Malayo-Chamic languages during the early development of statehood; (Stage 3) exchange of terms in the period of early Khmer, Cham, and Malay kingdoms. Some of these transmissions can be shown to have …

Malay (And Javanese) Loanwords In Frederick De Houtman’S Malagasy Wordlist, Alexander Adelaar
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Frederick de Houtman’s Malagasy language material (1603) consists of a wordlist and short prose texts. It represents a dialect spoken more than four hundred years ago in the Antongil Bay region on Madagascar’s northeast coast, which does not have a documented modern descendant. This chapter investigates Malay and (to a lesser extent) Javanese loanwords found in this material. Most of these loanwords are demonstrably old and can be dated to an era preceding the Malagasy migrations to eastern Africa thirteen centuries ago. They provide invaluable insights into the world of the early migrants to Madagascar and the degree of their …

Korean Loanwords In Indonesian; A Corpus-Based Study, Suhandano Suhandano, Ria Febrina, Arina Isti'anah, Hwang Who Young
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The borrowing of foreign lexicon in Indonesian is well documented. However, to date, research on Korean loanwords has remained unavailable. Against the backdrop of the Korean Wave (hallyu), this paper discusses the phonological adaptation of Korean loanwords in Indonesian and the way these loanwords contribute to the Indonesian lexical landscape. By collecting data on Korean culture from a selection of Instagram and Twitter (now X) accounts from the Indonesian community, our corpus shows that besides nouns, Korean loanwords also include adjectives and verbs. We identified 52 loanwords related to the domain of popular culture, including film, music, and …

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) participates in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) as part of a strategy to ensure educational improvement and future economic development for the country. The PISA results are presented by comparing every participating country on each test part, most often as a ranking. Different computed indices or relationships are also described within the results, mainly in comparison, and countries that exemplify the patterns or do not fit the patterns are described in the accompanying text. This research was conducted by analyzing each mention of the UAE in the four main results documents for PISA …

Academic writing is a contested area, even more so in times of large language models and artificial intelligence (AI). This writing is tricky to navigate and master especially for newcomers – staff and students. Learning Developers almost uniquely play with writing as a practice of emergence and discovery. Academic writing is a process: we write to become academic. Students write to join their epistemic communities, and Learning Developers write to give birth to an emergent field.Drawing on recent work by Syska and Buckley (2022) and Abegglen, Burns and Sinfield (2022; 2023), we argue that academic writing is an initiation into …

Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) still remains as an enigmatic phenomenon. In particular, long-term challenges (including clinical recurrence and persistent symptoms) and specific entities in the setting of TTS have been the evolving areas of interest. On the other hand, a significant gap still exists regarding the proper risk-stratification of this phenomenon in the short and long terms. The present paper, the second part (part-2) of the consensus report, aims to discuss less well-known aspects of TTS including specific entities, challenges after recovery and risk-stratification.

Background: Opioids are important medications that are used to control postoperative pain. The enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) program has reduced opioid use after surgery. In a surgical practice with a robust ERAS program, we wanted to determine if there was a relationship between in-hospital opioid use and postoperative complications.
Methods: We performed a retrospective nested case-control study of patients who underwent thoracic surgical intervention at the Houston Methodist Hospital (HMH) between 11/2020 and 11/2021 from the thoracic surgery database with hospital morphine milligram equivalent (MME) information, comparing patients who did and did not experience postoperative complications. We determined the …

In the recent years, there has been a burgeoning interest in Takotsubo syndrome (TTS), which is renowned as a specific form of reversible myocardial dysfunction. Despite the extensive literature available on TTS, clinicians still face several practical challenges associated with the diagnosis and management of this phenomenon. This potentially results in the underdiagnosis and improper management of TTS in clinical practice. The present paper, the first part (part-1) of the consensus report, aims to cover diagnostic and therapeutic challenges associated with TTS along with certain recommendations to combat these challenges.

BACKGROUND: Adaptation of evidence-based interventions (EBIs) often occurs when implemented in new local contexts and settings. It is unclear, however, during which phase of implementation adaptations are most frequently made and how these changes may impact the fidelity, effectiveness, and sustainability of the EBI. Pediatric Early Warning Systems (PEWS) are EBIs for early identification of deterioration in hospitalized children with cancer. This study evaluates adaptations of PEWS made among resource-variable pediatric oncology hospitals in Latin America implementing and sustaining PEWS.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey among pediatric oncology centers participating in Proyecto Escala de Valoración de Alerta Temprana (EVAT), …

In this high-throughput proteomic study of autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease (ADAD), we sought to identify early biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for disease monitoring and treatment strategies. We examined CSF proteins in 286 mutation carriers (MCs) and 177 non-carriers (NCs). The developed multi-layer regression model distinguished proteins with different pseudo-trajectories between these groups. We validated our findings with independent ADAD as well as sporadic AD datasets and employed machine learning to develop and validate predictive models. Our study identified 137 proteins with distinct trajectories between MCs and NCs, including eight that changed before traditional AD biomarkers. These proteins are grouped …

Remote Community Energy Insecurity – Some Preliminary Observations On Electricity Disconnections, Energy Costs And The Transition To Renewables In The Kimberley, Kathryn Thorburn, Anna Dwyer, Stephen Kinnane
Talking Heads Seminar Series
As Australia adopts a Carbon Neutral future, energy insecurity in remote Indigenous Australia remains a major impediment to equity and development.
“Energy security” is the term used to describe reliability of electricity connection, and for the vast majority of Australians, energy security is not a challenge. This is not the case for many remote Indigenous households, including approx. 1200 in the Kimberley, who have a prepaid system for their power connection.
Electricity disconnections are disproportionately high for households that have a prepay system, where consumers must pay in advance for their power. When their credit runs out, they are immediately …
