Religious Pressure And Perceptions Of Sexual Intimacy, Madison A. Price, Lenny Perry, Olivia Farias, Emma Jay Nov 2024

Religious Pressure And Perceptions Of Sexual Intimacy, Madison A. Price, Lenny Perry, Olivia Farias, Emma Jay

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Religious beliefs and sexual inclinations have co-existed, correlated, and conflicted within individuals. For years, the religious pressure bestowed upon an individual has been known to impact one’s sexual decisions, including one’s timing of sexual activity, the number of sexual partners one has, and one’s attitude toward pre-marital sex (Armstrong et al., 2019). This study examines the impact of religious pressure on these beliefs regarding sexual intimacy. A sample of about 38 college students ranging from ages 18-23 were randomly assigned to 3 different groups ranging from low to high religious pressure. Religious pressure was distributed in the form of music, …

Refining Chlorosulfonation Methods For The Synthesis Of A Perfluoroalkyl Arylsulfonimide (Pfsi) Monomer, Ainsley P. Foster, Benjamin Varney, Hua Mei Nov 2024

Refining Chlorosulfonation Methods For The Synthesis Of A Perfluoroalkyl Arylsulfonimide (Pfsi) Monomer, Ainsley P. Foster, Benjamin Varney, Hua Mei

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells are sources of energy that are clean, quiet, and highly responsive to changes in power needs, making them promising for use in automobiles and other portable power devices. The electrolyte of a PEM cell–the layer responsible for conductivity–is a polymer membrane, commonly consisting of perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acid (PFSA) polymers. Perfluoroalkyl arylsulfonimide (PFSI) polymers are expected to improve the efficiency of PEM fuel cells through optimal stability and proton conductivity. The trifluovinylether (TFVE) aryl perfluorosulfonamide monomer is a new PFSI monomer proposed to fulfill these benefits once polymerized. A six-step synthesis route was initially designed to …

Srebp Versus Nrf1 Behavior Based On Cholesterol Sensing In Niemann-Pick Type C Using A Cos-7 Model, Christine Tran, Jacob Mcintyre, Felicity Sterling Phd Nov 2024

Srebp Versus Nrf1 Behavior Based On Cholesterol Sensing In Niemann-Pick Type C Using A Cos-7 Model, Christine Tran, Jacob Mcintyre, Felicity Sterling Phd

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Niemann-Pick disease type C (NPC) is a rare genetic disorder where cholesterol and lipid transport are blocked leading to accumulation in the lysosomes (National Organization of Rare Diseases (NORD), 2024; Boston Children’s Hospital). This accumulation can lead to neurological issues, such as developmental delay, ataxia, seizures, and early onset of dementia (Patterson, 2000). To study this disease more in depth, scientists have identified a drug called U18666A that induces NPC in the cells it is administered to (Lu, et al., 2015) which allows for the study of other structures and biomolecules in the sterol sensing and transport pathways.

Cholesterol has …

International Geneva And Woodrow Wilson’S Legacy, Martin Dahinden

Swiss American Historical Society Review

New York and Geneva are the world’s most important centers of multilateral diplomacy. The shores of Lake Geneva attract almost five thousand visits from heads of state and government and other personalities every year. More than 4,000 conferences are held in Geneva, face-to-face or in hybrid formats. Geneva is home to 42 international organizations, 180 diplomatic missions and around 750 nongovernmental organizations.

Challenges And Opportunities In Providing Academic Library Services To Incarcerated Higher Education Students: A Case Study From A Tennessee State Prison, Ryan E. Yoakum, Caroline Fleming Nov 2024

Challenges And Opportunities In Providing Academic Library Services To Incarcerated Higher Education Students: A Case Study From A Tennessee State Prison, Ryan E. Yoakum, Caroline Fleming

Library Faculty Scholarship

This case study describes the Belmont University Library’s partnership with a Tennessee men’s prison to provide access to higher education. The program has led to challenges relating to communication, circulation, cataloging, and collection development. These library services are necessary to provide students with access to information not only for their academic endeavors, but also for their own well-being and growth. This paper explores possible solutions to the information deficit of incarcerated students and how the library can support the needs of an underserved population.

Schwarzenbach’S Dark End Of The Street In Washington, Annemarie Schwarzenbach, Padraig Rooney , Translator Nov 2024

Schwarzenbach’S Dark End Of The Street In Washington, Annemarie Schwarzenbach, Padraig Rooney , Translator

Swiss American Historical Society Review

First published in National-Zeitung, on November 11, 1936.

Annemarie Schwarzenbach wrote this piece about Washington, D.C. shortly after her arrival in the city in late August 1936. She stayed on Waterside Drive at the home of Elizabeth Washburn Wright, the widow of Dr. Hamilton Wright, a specialist in tropical medicine but also a government-appointed anti-drug crusader in the battle against Chinese opium.

As a morphine addict, Annemarie was hiding in plain sight. In September, with their daughter, Barbara Hamilton Wright (‘Baa’), Annemarie travelled a thousand miles north to Livingston Falls in Maine, homestead of the illustrious Washburn family to …

Four Swiss At Fort Laramie, Jocelyn Moore Nov 2024

Four Swiss At Fort Laramie, Jocelyn Moore

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Starting as a frontier fur trade post in the 1830’s, Fort Laramie, Wyoming Territory, played a prominent role in western expansion. Purchased by the United States government in 1849, the fort’s location near immigrant trails and Native American homelands provided a front row seat to American history. It is estimated that over three hundred thousand people passed the fort during their migration westward. Of the multitude, many were Swiss, including Private Jacob Haudenschild, Sergeant Leodegar Schnyder, Dr. Rudolph B. Hitz and Captain Alfred von Wattenwyl.
