Repurposed Energy, Alexandra B. Klass Nov 2024

Repurposed Energy, Alexandra B. Klass

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Wildfires, weather extremes, and other conditions induced partially by climate change add urgency to the project of accelerating the clean energy transition from fossil fuels to zero-carbon energy infrastructure. Yet the hurdles to accomplishing such a massive industrial-scale transition are daunting. Indeed, large renewable energy generation projects regularly face denials or project-killing delays across the United States. This Article proposes a national policy to channel the bulk of new clean energy projects to targeted categories of both rural lands and urban, post-industrial lands that we define collectively as “repurposed energy” sites. Such lands will consist of marginal farmland, abandoned coal …

Definite Convictions: United States V. Alt And The Seventh Circuit's Prohibition On Defining "Beyond A Reasonable Doubt", Samuel Busiman Nov 2024

Definite Convictions: United States V. Alt And The Seventh Circuit's Prohibition On Defining "Beyond A Reasonable Doubt", Samuel Busiman

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

The Seventh Circuit prohibits judges and attorneys from defining “beyond a reasonable doubt” to jurors. While United States v. Alt crystalized this prohibition in early 2023, the circuit has effectively banned definition of the phrase for much longer. Yet, a growing consensus of psychological research into the standard reveals that when left undefined, it fails to protect criminal defendants from uncertain convictions that violate the requirements of due process. What’s more, the phrase was never supposed to serve as a standard of proof in the first place—its historical origins reveal it functioning to assuage the spiritual concerns of early Christian …

Reconstruction, And The Unfulfilled Promise Of Antitrust, Bennett Capers Nov 2024

Reconstruction, And The Unfulfilled Promise Of Antitrust, Bennett Capers

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Wealth inequality remains as wide, and as troubling, as it was a half-century ago. While scholars have offered various explanations, there is a contributor that has escaped serious scrutiny: state monopoly power. It is not just that there is a long history of states and municipalities using their monopoly power to protect dominant interests, from enacting Black Codes to shuttering Chinese laundries to barring women, immigrants, and minorities from certain professions. It is also that states continue to use their monopoly power in ways that entrench inequality, from zoning restrictions to eminent domain to regulations that, in effect, bar Black …

Clostridium Septicum: Cause Of Gas Gangrene In The Upper Extremity Leading To Proximal Trans-Humeral Amputation, A Review Of Clostridium Septicum., Mark Lagreca, Denise Chen, Patrick Frick, Genoveffa Morway, Austin Egger, Julia Mayberry Nov 2024

Clostridium Septicum: Cause Of Gas Gangrene In The Upper Extremity Leading To Proximal Trans-Humeral Amputation, A Review Of Clostridium Septicum., Mark Lagreca, Denise Chen, Patrick Frick, Genoveffa Morway, Austin Egger, Julia Mayberry

Orthopedic Surgery Resident Research

INTRODUCTION: Gas gangrene is a rare, often lethal infection of soft tissue that is commonly associated with the Clostridial species due to penetrating injuries. Case reports of spontaneous atraumatic gas gangrene due to the Clostridium septicum species are exceedingly rare. Atraumatic C. septicum is notably related to bowel pathologies, immunodeficiencies, and individuals with vascular insufficiency. The rapid progression of Clostridium myonecrosis contributes to its high mortality rates.

CASE REPORT: The authors report a case of a 71-year-old right-hand-dominant female who developed fulminant atraumatic left forearm pain and swelling. The patient was indicated for emergent irrigation and debridement (I&D) of the …

From Block To Shred: Understanding The Factors Influencing Shreddability Of Mozzarella Cheese, Gunvantsinh Rathod, Suresh Saatariya, Ram Kumar, Praveen Upreti, Prafulla Salunke, J.K. Amamcharla

Dairy Science and Food Science Faculty Publications: 2022 to Present

Mozzarella cheese (MC) is widely used for pizza ap- plications, and it is generally shredded either in conver- sion plants or in pizzerias. The shreddability of MC is influenced by a variety of factors and it is critical to understand how different Mozzarella cheese types and storage conditions (temperature and age) affect this prop- erty. Three batches each of 3 types of MC (low-moisture Mozzarella (LMM), low-moisture part-skim Mozzarella (LMPS), and reduced fat Mozzarella (RFM)) representing 3 different fat levels were procured directly from a com- mercial manufacturer and stored at 2 different tempera- tures (1.67 and 4.44°C) and evaluated …

Comity & Federalism In Extraterritorial Abortion Regulation, Jensen Lillquist Nov 2024

Comity & Federalism In Extraterritorial Abortion Regulation, Jensen Lillquist

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court decided Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and held that states may regulate abortion in whatever manner they wish. In the wake of Dobbs, commentators and laypersons have focused primarily on its implications for reproductive rights and other fundamental rights—such as gay marriage. Less often discussed are the questions that arise regarding state extraterritorial jurisdiction. Since Dobbs, a patchwork of laws has developed: pro-life states have placed greater restrictions on abortion, while pro-choice states have sought to expand abortion access. Questions have arisen regarding whether and to what extent states may regulate the …

Abortion Access For Incarcerated People Post-Dobbs, Kate Bock Nov 2024

Abortion Access For Incarcerated People Post-Dobbs, Kate Bock

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization has fundamentally altered the legal landscape regarding abortion access. Though abortion rights for all people across the United States have now been eliminated or are in jeopardy, incarcerated people are a particularly vulnerable group, given the way carceral institutions restrict autonomy and the drastic health implications of an unwanted pregnancy while confined. Before Dobbs, detained people retained the constitutional right to an elective abortion while incarcerated. To remedy violations of this right, women brought claims under the Fourteenth Amendment and the Eighth Amendment. In a post-Roe world, however, incarcerated folks denied abortion …

Racing Latinidad, Renee Hudson Nov 2024

Racing Latinidad, Renee Hudson

English Faculty Books and Book Chapters

This chapter argues that the terms “Latinx” and “latinidad” are messy signifiers that allow us to contend with Latinx’s complicated racial history. While the term Latinx continues to be controversial, and scholars such as Tatiana Flores have examined the case for cancelling latinidad, “Racing Latinidad” points to how latinidad can signify particular political commitments and affinities. Through readings of Manuel Muñoz’s What You See in the Dark (2011) and Dahlma Llanos-Figueroa’s Daughters of the Stone (2009), this chapter illuminates how excavating racial histories outside the logic of the state is a way to summon a politics to imagine a people. …

Central Bank Undersight: Assessing The Fed’S Accountability To Congress, Andrew T. Levin Professor Of Economics, Christina Parajon Skinner Assoc. Professor Nov 2024

Central Bank Undersight: Assessing The Fed’S Accountability To Congress, Andrew T. Levin Professor Of Economics, Christina Parajon Skinner Assoc. Professor

Vanderbilt Law Review

As America’s central bank, the Federal Reserve (“Fed”) is unique among independent agencies in exercising powers that the U.S. Constitution granted to the legislative branch—namely, regulating the value of money and borrowing funds directly from the public. In delegating these powers, Congress designed the Fed to ensure that its monetary policy decisions would be insulated from political interference. Furthermore, Congress has a constitutional obligation to maintain effective oversight of the Fed’s exercise of these duties. Over the past fifteen years, however, the scope and complexity of monetary policy has outpaced Congress’s ability to monitor these policies through existing mechanisms of …

Glove Compartment: Antedatings And The Ultimate (Albeit Indirect) Role Of Racing Driver Dorothy Levitt (1882-1922) In The Origin Of The Term, Gerald Leonard Cohen Nov 2024

Glove Compartment: Antedatings And The Ultimate (Albeit Indirect) Role Of Racing Driver Dorothy Levitt (1882-1922) In The Origin Of The Term, Gerald Leonard Cohen

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

At first glance it might seem the only thing to say about ‘glove compartment’ is that its original purpose was to hold gloves. And indeed, OED3 presents no discussion on the term, merely setting forth two attestations (1939, 1959). But questions do arise, e.g.,

1) Why was it so important to have gloves in the car?

2) If gloves served the practical purpose of preventing hands from numbing in cold weather, why is the first OED attestation so late?

3) Can any earlier attestations be found?

4) Can anyone be determined to have played a role in the naming of …

Bone Surface Modification Dataset Synthesis For Computer Vision Models Using Lora Tuned Latent Diffusion Models, Jason Mixon Nov 2024

Bone Surface Modification Dataset Synthesis For Computer Vision Models Using Lora Tuned Latent Diffusion Models, Jason Mixon

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

This research leveraged generative artificial intelligence to significantly enhance the training dataset of bone surface modification examples, optimizing computer vision classification for archaeological artifacts. The current method of manually producing bone surface modification examples is both time-consuming and labor-intensive, imposing constraints on the number of images available for training computer vision models, which require substantial data to achieve high accuracy. To address this limitation, a generative diffusion model fine-tuned using Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) was trained on an existing dataset of bone surface modification examples. The fine-tuned model was then used to generate synthetic images, which were subsequently applied in a …

Wind Erosion Control After Fire In Western Australia, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia Nov 2024

Wind Erosion Control After Fire In Western Australia, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Natural resources factsheets

First steps after a fire

Act to limit further erosion:

• Remove livestock and keep them off burnt paddocks: they can be put into a confinement feeding area, an unburnt paddock or agisted.

• Minimise vehicle traffic on burnt areas

• Protect highly susceptible and valuable areas, such as house, garden, sheds, yards, gateways and laneways with binding spray, clay, gravel, old hay, or straw to give a full cover. A dust-free living and working environment is particularly important after a fire.

Leave burnt residue on roadsides, revegetation and bush areas to decrease the risk of wind erosion.

Roaded Catchments In Wa, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia Nov 2024

Roaded Catchments In Wa, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Natural resources factsheets

Roaded catchments are earthwork structures designed to increase the amount of run-off from the catchment above a receiving farm dam.

Roaded catchments are lined with clay and compacted to make a smooth surface that reduces infiltration and increases run-off. Roaded catchments should discharge into a silt trap and then into a dam (excavated earth tank). This combined structure should be fenced to exclude livestock.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development recommends that roaded catchments are part of an integrated water and salinity management program.

The information in this page is only a guide – seek expert advice before …
