Although Regge finite element functions are not continuous, useful generalizations of nonlinear derivatives like the curvature, can be defined using them. This paper is devoted to studying the convergence of the finite element lifting of a generalized (distributional) Gauss curvature defined using a metric tensor approximation in the Regge finite element space. Specifically, we investigate the interplay between the polynomial degree of the curvature lifting by Lagrange elements and the degree of the metric tensor in the Regge finite element space. Previously, a superconvergence result, where convergence rate of one order higher than expected, was obtained when the approximate metric …

Observations and present knowledge of heavy ions with mass ≥ 27 in the magnetosphere are reviewed. There are four ultimate sources of these heavy ions: the solar wind (mainly high charge-state atomic ions), the ionosphere (mainly molecular ions), the atmospheric metal layers that originate ultimately from ablation of meteoroids and possibly space debris (low charge-state metallic ions and metal-rich molecular ions), and lunar surface and exosphere (low charge-state metallic and molecular ions). The upstream heavy ions (solar wind origin and lunar origin) give independent information on the ion entry routes to the magnetosphere from proton (H+) and alpha particles (He++): …

Incorporating Ai Literacy Into Music Library Instruction: An Interactive Discussion, Taylor J. Greene
Library Presentations, Posters, and Audiovisual Materials
Taylor Greene gave a presentation connecting AI Literacy to his work not only as the liaison to the Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music but also more broadly in his role as Chair of Research and Instructional Services. He began by providing an overview of Chapman University’s cautious approach to embracing generative AI and highlighted the library’s role in supporting faculty, staff, librarians, and students in better understanding these technologies and their potential impact on higher education. He summarized the work of the AI Task Force and offered a general overview of the AI Literacy lectures that he and Dr. Doug Dechow …

Euphemism In Ai Discourse As Colonial Harm & Effect: Learnings From Subaltern Puerto Rico, Jacqueline Oquendo
Euphemism In Ai Discourse As Colonial Harm & Effect: Learnings From Subaltern Puerto Rico, Jacqueline Oquendo
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Through three integrated studies, this dissertation explores complex human-AI interactions by comparing the perceptions of two groups of U.S. citizens: subaltern Puerto Ricans and stateside Americans’ interactions with ChatGPT. This corpus-assisted Critical Discourse Analysis or CLCDA, triangulated with 1:1 semi-structured interviews, validates scholars’ concerns about the biases inherent in generative AI. Contributing to those concerns, this dissertation reveals that ChatGPT deploys discourse strategies that, when executed, facilitate digital colonialism. Euphemistic language is prominent among its discourse strategies, replacing controversial words, phrases, and topics with more palatable ones. When prompted on events of historical significance, I find that ChatGPT’s discourse obscures …

The first TeV γ-ray source with no lower energy counterparts, TeV J2032+4130, was discovered by HEGRA. It appears in the third HAWC catalog as 3HWC J2031+415 and it is a bright TeV γ-ray source whose emission has previously been resolved as two sources: HAWC J2031+415 and HAWC J2030+409. While HAWC J2030+409 has since been associated with the Fermi Large Area Telescope Cygnus Cocoon, no such association for HAWC J2031+415 has yet been found. In this work, we investigate the spectrum and energy-dependent morphology of HAWC J2031+415. We associate HAWC J2031+415 with a γ-ray binary system containing the pulsar PSR J2032+4127 …

Alf Engen At Sun Valley: Norwegian Immigrant Plays A Major Role In The Resort’S Early Years - Leads The Transition From Nordic To Alpine Skiing, John W. Lundin
Works by Local Authors
Alf Engen (1909-1997) immigrated to the U.S. from Mjondalen Norway in 1929,becoming the country’s best ski jumper and Four-Way competitor in the 1930s and 1940s. Alf was the oldest of the remarkable Engen family, that included his brothers Sverre and Karre(Corey). Alf was one of the pioneers who led the transition from Nordic events that dominated skiing in the early years, to alpine skiing in the latter part of the 1930s, along with Birger and Sigmund Ruud, Roy Mikkelsen, Hjalmar Hvam and others

Journal of Geriatric Emergency Medicine
A chief complaint of “constipation” in the emergency department (ED) is generally considered low-risk, and potentially suitable for lower acuity care. However, it may also indicate abdominal pain perceived as lower severity by triage staff, despite being relatively high-risk. We hypothesized that ED visits for constipation in older adults would more frequently result in the diagnosis of serious, treatable conditions compared to younger adults. We analyzed data from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS) over an 8-year period (2013-2020). Older adults with constipation were more likely to be non-Hispanic White. Among adults with constipation, 25.6% (95% CI: 22.8-28.4) …

Discourse Markers In Courtroom Language, Karrar Salim Yaseen
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
The current study is conducted to investigate the discourse markers used in courtroom discourse. It aims to identify the discourse markers used in the data under scrutiny and state the functions of such discourse markers. It hypothesizes that interjections are mostly used in the two selected episodes, and discourse markers are utilized to help keep the segments of the discourse coherent. Data is taken from a well-known TV show entitled “Caught in Providence” Providence municipal courthouse in which episodes, under question, are posted on the official account of Facebook. The results of the current study arrive at a variety of …

Relationship Between Social Media And Acts Of Domestic Terrorism And Extremism, Winford Rochelle Craig
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
After 9/11, domestic terrorism began to evolve in the United States and technological advances and the usage of social media (SM) increased exponentially. During the same era, technological advancement intensified and SM became one primary method of communication between extremists. SM has infiltrated into multiple segments of society, and became a method of transference of ideology, to the population of the United States. Domestic violent extremism (DVE) groups used SM to indoctrinate, train, and recruit individuals throughout the United States. The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the relationship between the increased usage of SM and the rise …

Importance: Blast-related mild traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), the "signature injury" of post-9/11 conflicts, are associated with clinically relevant, long-term cognitive, psychological, and behavioral dysfunction and disability; however, the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear.
Objective: To investigate associations between a history of remote blast-related mild TBI and regional brain volume in a sample of US veterans and active duty service members.
Design, setting, and participants: Prospective cohort study of US veterans and active duty service members from the Long-Term Impact of Military-Relevant Brain Injury Consortium-Chronic Effects of Neurotrauma Consortium (LIMBIC-CENC), which enrolled more than 1500 participants at 5 sites used in …

Deletion Of Fgfr2 In Ductal Basal Epithelium With Tamoxifen Induces Obstructive Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, Xiaowei Yang, Xingwu Zhong, Haotian Lin, Andrew J W Huang, Lixing W Reneker
2020-Current year OA Pubs
PURPOSE: Fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (Fgfr2) is crucial for the homeostasis of meibomian gland (MG). However, the role of Fgfr2 in MG ductal epithelial progenitors remains to be delineated. Herein, we created a new transgenic mouse model with conditional deletion of Fgfr2 from MG ductal progenitors and investigated the cell-specific role in the pathogenesis of obstructive meibomian gland dysfunction.
METHODS: Peritoneal injection of tamoxifen (TAM) at 50 µg/gm for three consecutive days was performed to induce conditional deletion of Fgfr2 in two-month-old Krt5Fgfr2CKO or Krt5Fgfr2CKO-mTmG mice. Phenotypes of MG after Fgfr2 deletion were monitored by meibography, lipid staining, and …

BACKGROUND: Medically tailored meal (MTM) programs provide home-delivered meals to people living with serious illness and poor nutritional status. Client outcome studies have found evidence of decreased healthcare utilization and cost savings associated with MTM program participation, and inconclusive evidence of change in health measures. The purpose of this study was to use a novel observational framework to describe the client profile and change in health outcomes using routinely collected health and program data from a community-based MTM program at MANNA (Philadelphia, PA).
METHODS: Clients reported their self-rated health and experiences of food insecurity and malnutrition. Healthcare providers reported clients' …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
The American higher education system is in a time of profound change (Levine & Van Pelt, 2021). Pressures such as shifting student demographics (Grawe, 2021), evolving technologies (Crawford, 2021; McCarthy, 2007), and increasing financial strains on institutional operating models (Marcy, 2020) are just a few of the stresses reshaping the landscape. Postsecondary leaders also face heightened scrutiny from prospective students and their families regarding the value of a college degree (National Association of Colleges and Employers, 2022). While improving job prospects remains the primary reason most student enroll in higher education (Gallup & Strada, 2017), the long-term economic return on …

Can Congress Give Unaffected Taxpayers Standing, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah
Articles
A recurring problem in tax law arises when the IRS promulgates a regulation or a notice that is too favorable to taxpayers.1 The problem is that nobody has standing to challenge the regulation. The IRS cannot challenge its own regulation, and taxpayers affected by the regulation have no interest in challenging it (and even if they did, they cannot show a concrete injury sufficient to establish standing). Congress may intervene, but that is rare for a taxpayer-favorable regulation (indeed, Congress sometimes intervenes to block IRS attempts to roll back its own regulations). Taxpayers unaffected by the regulation do not have …
