Reflection: The Twenty-Line Trap? Shakespeare Enacted By Young Women, Shannon Reed Nov 2024

Reflection: The Twenty-Line Trap? Shakespeare Enacted By Young Women, Shannon Reed

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

Professional actors assemble a toolkit of monologues with an obligatory “Shakespearean monologue” of around 20 lines. But female actors are at a disadvantage, with less than 150 women in a repertoire of over 1,100 characters in Shakespeare’s 37 or more plays. Young female actors (18-22 years old) are even more at a loss, if the powerful and complex older female roles are removed, leaving only a few dozen appropriate speeches. What effect does this limited canon have on such actors? Here, I reflect upon my own participant observer experience as a young woman actor, who received the bulk of my …

The Gentle Tongue: How Language Affected The World Of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Louisa Danielson

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

Although new episodes of the program ceased to be recorded in 2004, the Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood show is still recalled by many today as an iconic childhood staple—the right show to watch if you are a young child or a parent looking for something wholesome to view on television. This is as Fred Rogers, the creator of the program, wished, but what exactly were the goals behind the Mister Rogers’ program? What were the shaping forces that inspired Rogers’ theory for children’s educational television? These are questions explored in “The Gentle Tongue: How Language Affected the World of Mister Rogers’ …

“Can You Imagine, A Real, Live Indian Right Here In Walnut Grove?”: American Indians In Television Adaptations Of Little House On The Prairie, Amy S. Fatzinger Nov 2024

“Can You Imagine, A Real, Live Indian Right Here In Walnut Grove?”: American Indians In Television Adaptations Of Little House On The Prairie, Amy S. Fatzinger

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House novels have been adapted into two major television series: Michael Landon’s well-known series, which aired from 1974-1983, and a more recent Disney adaptation, which aired as a miniseries in 2005. The premier movie, which preceded Landon’s series, and the Disney miniseries both focus on the events in Wilder’s 1935 novel, Little House on the Prairie, which covered the period from 1869-1871 during which the Ingalls family lived among the Osage in Kansas Indian Territory. Wilder’s portrayal of the Osage in her novel is controversial, but she does also include some literary devices that allow …

Girls, Guns, And Zombies: Five Dimensions Of Teaching And Learning In The Walking Dead, Anthony Neely

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

Rooted in sociocultural theory, this article utilizes a conceptual framework derived from Alexander, Schallert, and Reynolds’ four topographical dimensions of learning: who of learning, what of learning, where of learning, and when of learning. Situated learning (Lave and Wenger) is presented as a fifth dimension to address how learning occurs in communities of practice absent of formal schooling. Content analysis (Elo and Kyngass) is used to analyze a teaching and learning event from an episode of The Walking Dead based on the five topographical dimensions of learning listed above. Findings provide insights for pedagogical application for …

Survivor Skills: Authenticity, Representation And Why I Want To Teach Reality Tv, May Friedman Nov 2024

Survivor Skills: Authenticity, Representation And Why I Want To Teach Reality Tv, May Friedman

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

This paper will consider the pedagogical potential in constructing a class on the phenomenon of reality television by exploring the possibilities and pitfalls of a shared viewing of these “texts” as a site of critical engagement with popular culture. A course on reality TV would require a deep analysis of the topics of representation, authenticity, and audience reactions. The course I would like to teach would also consider the ways that reality TV is simultaneously emblematic of, and contributes to, the foregrounding of neoliberal discourses. This paper addresses some of the pedagogical implications of an analysis of reality TV by …

A Field Guide To Teaching Agency And Ethics: The West Wing And American Foreign Policy, Kayce Mobley, Sarah Fisher Nov 2024

A Field Guide To Teaching Agency And Ethics: The West Wing And American Foreign Policy, Kayce Mobley, Sarah Fisher

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

Though political science undergraduate courses reflect a rich theoretical tradition, they typically lack opportunities for students to express intangible concepts through the interpretation of creative works, a standard exercise of critical analysis. Educators can address this dearth in many ways, such as through utilization of popular culture texts. We employ the television series The West Wing to ground debates in American politics, specifically American foreign policy. Although this show has been on air since 2006, Netflix and Amazon have recently released the entire series for streaming, significantly reducing the hassle and monetary cost of using this source in the classroom. …

Mobilizing The Masks Of Carnaval For A Re-Reading Of Zobel's Rue Cases-Nègres, Benjamin E. Tilson

Tête à Tête: Journal of Francophone Studies

The identity of Caribbean literature, subject to the forces of domination and exclusion, has long been contested from both within and outside of its field. Alternately described as imitating, reappropriating, indigenizing and reductionist, Caribbean writers have sought to carve out a space for works that are received as authentic without recourse to fetishes. Drawing upon the works of Maryse Condé, the Creolists and anthropologic studies of Carnaval, the present work attempts to analyze what might be termed alternative narratives, characters and symbols in Joseph Zobel’s novel La Rue Cases-Nègres and its filmic adaptation by Euzhan Palcy through the lens of …

Les Structures Identitaires Et Mémorielles Dans Nom De Constance Debré, Aditi Khasa

Tête à Tête: Journal of Francophone Studies

In Marie-Célie Agnant's 2015 novel Femmes aux temps des carnassiers, Mika Pelrin and her daughter Soledad are kidnapped, raped, and tortured by the Tonton Macoutes because of Mika's refusal to be silenced by the Duvalier regime in 1958. Through this fictional account based on appalling historical events and the tragic fate of journalist Yvonne Hakim Rimpel, Agnant insists on the vital societal role played by courageous women like her defiant character Mika who, through nonconformity and at the risk of their …

Les Expressions Erronées Dans La Traduction De Certains Francisants À Tai Solarin University Of Education, Malik Garba, Tajudeen Salaudeen

Tête à Tête: Journal of Francophone Studies

Tête à Tête: Journal of Francophone Studies

Prior to 1066, England was ruled by the Germanic speaking Anglo-Saxons. However, after the defeat of Harold II at the Battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror became King of England, ushering in a lengthy era in which English monarchs were primarily francophone. This article explores the linguistic situation in England before, during, and after the Norman Conquest of 1066. Specifically, this article looks at the Anglo-Norman dialect as a distinct Langue d’Oïl, focusing primarily on its phonetics, syntax, and orthography, using examples found in Laüstic and Chèvrefeuille, two lais written by Marie de France in the late 12 …

De La Saleté A La Poésie : Portrait De La France Périphérique Dans L’Été Des Charognes De Simon Johannin, Julie Catel

Tête à Tête: Journal of Francophone Studies

Simon Johannin's debut novel, "L'Été des charognes," published in 2017, offers a vivid portrayal of life in La Fourrière, an isolated village located in the Vosges. This area falls within what the French sociologist Christophe Guilluy terms 'France périphérique,' which refers to rural regions plagued by poverty and a sense of neglect. Through the perspective of an adolescent narrator, Johannin depicts the village's harsh daily reality, emphasizing its pervasive violence and the filth that characterizes its landscape. The narrative is saturated with descriptions of unpleasant odors, particularly from the decomposing carcasses of farm animals awaiting disposal, which permeate the village …

Entre Caricature Et Stigmatisation: Presentation Des Bossus Dans Contes D'Amadou Koumba De Birago Diop, Uchenna Bethrand Anih

Tête à Tête: Journal of Francophone Studies

L’Insécurité Linguistique Et La Confiance De S’Identifier Comme Bilingue: Le Cas Des Élèves D’Immersion Française En Saskatchewan Au Canada, Olushola J. Adedeji, Michael Akinpelu

Tête à Tête: Journal of Francophone Studies

The effects of different testing time limits on test anxiety levels, testing duration, and testing performance has not been studied.

Helping The Little Guy: A Comparative Analysis Of Shareholder Protection Mechanisms In The United States And Singapore, Jack Schlafly Nov 2024

Helping The Little Guy: A Comparative Analysis Of Shareholder Protection Mechanisms In The United States And Singapore, Jack Schlafly

Georgia Journal of International & Comparative Law

As American corporate law has developed since the Progressive and New

Deal eras, shareholders have increasingly employed the shareholder proposal

mechanism, provided by SEC Rule 14a-8, as a means to achieve any number

of desired results. Generally, Rule 14a-8 requires companies to include

shareholder proposals on their proxy statements. The desires of shareholders,

outside of their often primary desire to make money, now frequently include

Environmental, Social, and Governance (“ESG”) reform, increasing board

diversity, merger and acquisition-related decisions, and monitoring executive

pay. In particular, shareholders’ focus on ESG reform is no surprise given the

broad worldwide focus on responding to …

The Ugly Side Of The Beautiful Game: The World Cup’S Impact On The Migrant Labor Crisis In Qatar And What It Means For The United States Of America As Future Hosts, Jack Richardson

Georgia Journal of International & Comparative Law

The 2022 FIFA World Cup hosted in Qatar was mired in controversy.

From the corrupt bidding process to the sub-standard working and living

conditions, Qatar was heavily criticized for its management of the World Cup.

This paper explores two of the main critiques levied against the host nation:

its exploitation of migrant labor and the harsh and restrictive policies against

women and the LGBT community. Concerning migrant labor, the kafala

system is the primary cause of hardship. It is a labor sponsorship system, and

it requires migrant workers to invest time and resources to acquire a job in

Qatar, a …

Stop Carrying The Interest! A Comparison Of U.S. And Chilean Taxation Of Private Equity Fund Managers Under International Human Rights Law, Maggie Carr

Georgia Journal of International & Comparative Law

Why do we tax? How do we tax? Who should we tax? While asked by

almost all of us, these questions are usually answered by a select few.

Economists who work in theoretical realities, lawyers full of jargon, and

legislators with competing interests all have different answers to those

questions. Some might even have different answers depending on who is

asking. Beyond the theory and the jargon, however, lies an underlying base of

equity and fairness that drives all citizens to ask these questions. This Note

will attempt to answer one small piece of these enormous questions by

focusing on …
