Chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) significantly increases the risk of major adverse limb events (MALE) and major adverse cardiac events (MACE) after lower extremity revascularization (LER). This study aims to identify novel biomarkers that help to further reduce the risk of postoperative cardiovascular complications. In this prospective, nonrandomized, observational study, baseline serum levels of sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) were assessed in 147 diabetic patients scheduled for LER due to CLTI, and participants were followed for the occurrence of MALE and MACE over 12 months. Fifty-three patients experienced MALE, and 33 experienced MACE within the follow-up period. Lower baseline SIRT1 levels were significantly …

Despite being in existence for more than 2400 years, when the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal accumulated and neatly arranged and described nearly 30,000 clay tablets in Nineveh, the archival profession remains largely unknown. Many reasons explain this. Some include the confidentiality of archival documents, copyright restrictions, the slow pace of digitalization and digitization etc., etc. This presentation explores some Library digital apps and AI tools that archivists can adopt to promote their holdings.

On The Non-Existence Of Some Moore Cayley Digraphs, Alexander Gavrilyuk Nov 2024

On The Non-Existence Of Some Moore Cayley Digraphs, Alexander Gavrilyuk

Combinatorics Seminar

Anundirected Moore graph has the maximum number of vertices possible among all graphs with given maximum valency and diameter. It was shown by Bannai and Ito, and Damerell that a non-complete Moore graph must be regular of valency 2, 3, 7, or 57, where the existence of a graph in the latter case is a famous open problem in algebraic graph theory. We consider a generalization of Moore graphs to digraphs (or mixed graphs), where both undirected edges and arcs are allowed. It was shown by Nguyen, Miller, and Gimbert that the diameter of a Moore digraph is at most …

New York State Div. Of Hous. & Community Renewal V. Zara Realty Holding Corp. Nov 2024

New York State Div. Of Hous. & Community Renewal V. Zara Realty Holding Corp.

All Decisions

The New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal (DHCR) and the New York State Attorney General (AG) sued Zara Realty Holding Corp. and related entities for violating rent stabilization laws, harassing tenants, and illegally collecting broker fees. The court denied the defendants' motion to compel discovery from the DHCR and AG, and granted the plaintiffs' cross-motion to compel discovery from the defendants. The court held that the DHCR and AG were not required to produce documents or witnesses for deposition, as they were acting in a law enforcement capacity. The court also determined that the defendants' discovery requests …

Engaging Children In Conversations About Loss With The Help Of A Canadian Activity Book, Giulia Adele Dinicola

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

In Canada, the practice of medically assisting patients in dying has been legal since 2016. Patients who have been diagnosed with serious diseases or disabilities—including mental illnesses, starting in March 2024—may meet the requirements to seek medically assisted suicide. As a result of this legalization, medical and ethical communities have expressed concerns regarding those who assist their loved ones in the process of dying. To date, little has been written about how children react when someone close to them decides to end their life due to unbearable suffering. In July 2022, the Canadian Virtual Hospice group published the Medical Assistance …

1719 Gates Llc V Torres

All Decisions

The landlord commenced a non-renewal holdover proceeding against the tenant, who was a tenant in a market-rate apartment. The tenant's lease had expired. The landlord argued that the tenant had failed to pay rent due and owing, which constituted good cause for eviction under the Good Cause Eviction Law. The court granted the landlord's motion, finding that the plain language of the Good Cause Eviction Law authorized a non-renewal holdover for nonpayment of rent, even though the tenant's lease had expired. The court entered a default judgment for the landlord, but granted the tenant a 10-day stay to cure the …

Quantifying Chemomechanical Weakening In Muscovite Mica With A Simple Micromechanical Model, Jordan J. Sickle, William M. Mook, Frank W. Delrio, Anastasia G. Ilgen, Wendelin Wright, Karin A. Dahmen

Faculty Journal Articles

In response to gradual nanoindentation, the surface of muscovite mica deforms by sudden stochastic nanometer-scale displacement bursts. Here, the statistics of these displacement events are interpreted using a statistical model previously used to model earthquakes to understand how chemically reactive environments alter the surface properties of this material. We show that the statistics of nanoindentation displacement bursts in muscovite mica are tuned by chemomechanical weakening in a manner similar to how the statistics of model events are tuned by a mechanical weakening parameter that describes how easily system-spanning cracks can be nucleated. Because the predictions of this model are independent …

The Costs Of Ecosystem Disturbances, E. Wesley F. Peterson Nov 2024

The Costs Of Ecosystem Disturbances, E. Wesley F. Peterson

Cornhusker Economics

Presents an illustration of the interdependencies inherent in natural ecosystems. An ecosystem may be defined as: “… a single environment and every living (biotic) organism and non-living (abiotic) factor that is contained within it or characterizes it. An ecosystem embodies every aspect of a single habitat, including all interactions between its different elements” (Knapp 2020). In such interdependent systems, removal of one or more of the essential “elements” can severely disrupt the functioning of the system and such disruptions can give rise to negative impacts on the environment and human health and well-being.

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

We examined relations between foreign funding of U.S. colleges and universities and campus political developments. Seven studies investigated associations between foreign funding and campus liberal democratic norms, specifically, deterioration of free speech and academic freedom, and presence of antisemitism. Study I found that 349 colleges and universities received a total of almost $18 billion from foreign sources between 2014 and 2019. Study II examined relationships of foreign funding to campus deplatforming of speakers and punitive actions for speech protected by academic freedom. Main results were: 1. overall foreign funding was not strongly related to campus speech outcomes; 2. higher levels …

Normalization Of Cystic Fibrosis Immune System Reverses Intestinal Neutrophilic Inflammation And Significantly Improves The Survival Of Cystic Fibrosis Mice, Callie E. Scull, Yawen Hu, Scott Jennings, Guoshun Wang

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder, affecting multiple organ systems. CF intestinal disease develops early, manifesting as intestinal bacterial overgrowth/dysbiosis, neutrophilic inflammation, and obstruction. As unresolvable infection and inflammation reflect host immune deficiency, we sought to determine if the CF-affected immune system plays any significant role in CF intestinal disease pathogenesis. METHODS: CF and sibling wild-type (WT) mice underwent reciprocal bone marrow transplantation. After immune reconstitution, their mortality, intestinal transit, fecal inflammatory markers, and mucosal immune cell composition were assessed. Moreover, reciprocal neutrophil transfusion was conducted to determine if neutrophil function affects intestinal movement. …

Indigenous Conflict Resolution Mechanism And Peace Building Process In Nigeria: An Analysis Of The Yoruba Traditional Institution, Fasuan Emmanuel Olawale

Student Works (2020-2029)

This study delves into the conflict resolution and peace building processes in Africa, focusing specifically on the traditional institutional systems of the Yoruba people in Southwestern Nigeria. It examines how the Yoruba traditional system is characterized by various processes and pragmatic dynamism that fosters social cohesion. The study highlights the significance of cultural and traditional institutions in conflict resolution, particularly from an African perspective, in response to the ethnic, communal, and violent conflicts prevalent in Africa. By shifting the focus from international to local practices in conflict management and peace building, the study explores the role of Yoruba traditional approaches …

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

Background: Smoking prevalence among U.S. adults experiencing homelessness is ≥70 %. Interventions are needed to address persisting tobacco disparities.

Methods: Adults who smoked combustible cigarettes (CC) daily (N=60) were recruited from an urban day shelter and randomly assigned to an e-cigarette switching intervention with or without financial incentives for carbon monoxide (CO)-verified CC abstinence (EC vs. EC+FI). All participants received an e-cigarette device and nicotine pods during the first 4 weeks post-switch; and those in the EC+FI group also received escalating weekly incentives for CC abstinence during the same period. Key follow-ups were conducted at 4- and 8-weeks …

Smooth And Proper Maps With Respect To A Fibration, Mathieu Anel, Jonathan Weinberger Nov 2024

Smooth And Proper Maps With Respect To A Fibration, Mathieu Anel, Jonathan Weinberger

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

This paper explain how the geometric notions of local contractibility and properness are related to the Σ-types and Π-types constructors of dependent type theory. We shall see how every Grothendieck fibration comes canonically with such a pair of notions—called smooth and proper maps—and how this recovers the previous examples and many more. This paper uses category theory to reveal a common structure between geometry and logic, with the hope that the parallel will be beneficial to both fields. The style is mostly expository, and the main results are proved in external references.

In Finland, the frequency of isolated cleft palate (CP) is higher than that of isolated cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P). This trend contrasts to that in other European countries but its genetic underpinnings are unknown. We conducted a genome-wide association study in the Finnish population and identified rs570516915, a single nucleotide polymorphism highly enriched in Finns, as strongly associated with CP (P = 5.25 × 10-34, OR = 8.65, 95% CI 6.11-12.25), but not with CL/P (P = 7.2 × 10-5), with genome-wide significance. The risk allele frequency of rs570516915 parallels the regional variation of CP prevalence …
