Biological nanopores are increasingly used in molecular sensing due to their single-molecule sensitivity. The detection of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) like perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid is critical due to their environmental prevalence and toxicity. Here, we investigate selective interactions between PFAS and four cyclodextrin (CD) variants (α-, β-, γ-, and 2-hydroxypropyl-γ-CD) within an α-hemolysin nanopore. We demonstrate that PFAS molecules can be electrochemically sensed by interacting with a γ-CD in a nanopore. Using HP-γ-CDs with increased steric resistance, we can identify homologs of the perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid and the perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acid families and detect common PFAS …

The Impact Of Cash Holding Decisions On Firm Performance In The It Industry, Jaeseong Lim, Bong Keun Jeong
The Impact Of Cash Holding Decisions On Firm Performance In The It Industry, Jaeseong Lim, Bong Keun Jeong
Accounting
This study examines the relationship between corporate cash holdings and firm performance within the IT industry, which is characterized by intense competition and rapid technological advancements. We propose an integrated framework that combines principal component analysis (PCA), machine learning (ML) algorithms, and Shapley additive explanation (SHAP) values to estimate and interpret model outcomes. Based on 21,051 corporate financial statement data items from 2004 and 2023, the empirical evidence supports an inverted U-shaped relationship between cash holdings and profitability, suggesting that holding either too little or too much cash is suboptimal. Among the tested models, the random forest demonstrates the highest …

Cancer survivors have an increased risk of developing second primary malignancies. We aimed to identify whether certain cancers lead to an increased risk of developing melanoma among cancer survivors. We evaluated the risk of developing cutaneous melanoma after the 20 most common cancers in the United States through the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. We identified 9 primary cancers linked to increased risk of developing a subsequent cutaneous melanoma: cutaneous melanoma (standardized incidence ratio [SIR] = 9.65), leukemia (SIR = 1.76), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (SIR = 1.33), thyroid cancer (SIR = 1.32), brain and nervous system cancer (SIR = 1.31), …

Nature Inspired Optimization For Spectrum Sensing And Allocation In Cognitive Radio Networks, Saravanan R
Nature Inspired Optimization For Spectrum Sensing And Allocation In Cognitive Radio Networks, Saravanan R
Theses and Dissertations
Cognitive radio (CR) refers to intelligent radio technology that scans its environment to optimize spectrum use and adjusts its parameters accordingly. It employs a communication system that is aware of its surroundings, including spectrum usage and availability. A key aspect of CR is identifying idle channels by analyzing traffic patterns using effective learning strategies.
However, CRNs face challenges such as cross-layer design issues, spectrum sensing errors, hidden node problems, and complex spectrum management. Spectrum sensing is critical for accessing unused radio spectrum while minimizing interference. Efficient sensing techniques must be cost-effective, fast, and capable of detecting weak primary signals. Although …
Biofabrication Of Tissue Constructs Using Protein-In-Polysaccharide Bioinks For Muscle Regeneration, Harshavardhan B
Biofabrication Of Tissue Constructs Using Protein-In-Polysaccharide Bioinks For Muscle Regeneration, Harshavardhan B
Theses and Dissertations
Myocardial infarction (MI) and volumetric muscle loss (VML) are debilitating conditions that severely affect patient quality of life and challenge healthcare systems, particularly in diagnosis and treatment. Conventional therapies often result in long recovery periods with limited functional restoration. Advances in regenerative medicine, especially extrusion-based 3D bioprinting, offer promising potential to improve the regeneration of complex tissues by precisely depositing cells and biomaterials layer-by-layer to create tailored tissue constructs.
A critical challenge in muscle tissue regeneration is developing protein-polysaccharide bioinks that closely mimic the native muscle tissue microenvironment. In this study, two protein-inpolysaccharide bioinks (alginate-fibrinogen and methylcellulose-gelatin-alginate) were developed to …

Americans Face Migration: A Comparative Study Of State Immigration Policy By Region, 1865-1925, Brett S. Janos
History ETDs
This dissertation challenges the prevailing narrative of U.S. immigration policy by examining the pivotal role of state governments in shaping immigration patterns and regulations during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Through a comprehensive regional analysis, this study highlights the diverse approaches taken by different states in attracting and managing immigrant populations. The research demonstrates the complex interplay between local, state, and federal authorities by comparing state-level policies.
This multi-layered approach reveals the ingenuity of state immigration boards and commissions and the complex interplay between state desires, regional characteristics, and the evolving federal response. Moreover, a vital contribution of …

Laminar flame codes have an important role in combustion modeling. They can provide a fundamental understanding of flame dynamics and provide a basis for building subgrid scale models in turbulent flow simulations. This paper presents Ignis, an open-source laminar flame code with the capability to offload submodels, like soot formation and radiation, using external packages and libraries. Ignis is written in C++, is documented with Doxygen, and is available on GitHub. It contains three different flame formulations: diffusion flames, premixed flames, and laminar flamelets solved in the mixture fraction coordinate. An option to facilitate creation of a diffusion flame table …

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women over 50 years of age. Although mammograms have been proven to be effective in early detection of breast cancer, compliance rates are declining in the United States making it an objective for Healthy People 2030 to achieve and maintain a national compliance rate of 80.3%. For early detection of breast cancer among women between 50 to 74 years old to occur, an effective breast cancer screening program is vital. To understand why mammogram compliance rates were below the national average at a primary care community health center in …

This study evaluates the effectiveness of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and California Green Building Standards Code (CALGreen) sustainability programs in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in multifamily buildings. We find that CALGreen effectively reduces GHG emissions by 7.2%–11.6%. However, among properties completed during the CALGreen period (on or after 2015), LEED-certified properties exhibit 14.1%–20.8% higher GHG emissions compared to non-LEED-certified buildings. We attribute this result to the emphasis on theoretical design versus actual energy performance of those programs. Furthermore, our research reveals that LEED-certified buildings completed before the implementation of CALGreen command a rent premium of 4.7%–5.4%. …

METHODS: This is a multicenter retrospective study to assess the prognostic and predictive performance of a multimodal artificial intelligence biomarker (MMAI; the ArteraAI Prostate Test) in men with omCSPC (n = 222). The cohort also included 51 patients from the STOMP and ORIOLE phase 2 clinical trials which randomized patients to observation versus metastasis-directed therapy (MDT). MMAI scores were computed from digitized histopathology slides and clinical variables. Overall survival (OS) and time to castration-resistant prostate cancer (TTCRPC) were …
You’Ve Got To Admit It: An Evaluation Of Holistic Admissions Ratings To Predict Successful Outcomes In A Doctoral Program Of Clinical Psychology, Lauren Kidd
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Graduate admissions teams analyze student applications to decide which applicants to invite for postgraduate work. Historically, graduate admissions teams have attended to cognitive measures, including undergraduate GPA and standardized test scores. While these items have some predictive validity for cognitive outcomes like graduate GPA, admissions teams consider other admissions data to discern whom to invite for enrollment. Clinical psychology admissions teams consider written application materials, letters of reference, and curricula vitae to create a more holistic view of applicants. Research has yet to discern how the integrated evaluation of admissions data might predict the success of future professionals and serve …

BACKGROUND: Pathogenic Escherichia coli strains produce neonatal septicemia after colonizing the neonatal gut. While the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) effectively reduces neonatal sepsis, LGG's effects on the neonatal intestinal microbiota alterations and inflammation triggered by E. coli are incompletely understood. We hypothesized that LGG significantly modulates the specific neonatal gut microbial populations changes and the inflammatory response elicited by the enteral introduction of septicemia-producing E. coli. To test this hypothesis, newborn rats were pretreated orally with LGG or placebo prior to infection with the neonatal E. coli septicemia clinical isolate SCB34. Amplicon 16S rRNA gene sequencing was performed on …

Interest has arisen in exploring the off-label application of left-sided percutaneous mechanical aspiration, where conventional management strategies may not suffice. Percutaneous mechanical aspiration has been shown to be effective as a diagnostic and therapeutic intervention in select patients with infective endocarditis. This paper hereby reports the first case of a successful transeptal large bore manual aspiration device (AlphaVac; Angiodynamics) for nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis with total resolution of associated severe mitral valve regurgitation.
