Wearing Many Hats: Chinese Muslim General Bai Chongxi And The Chinese Muslim Association During The War Of Resistance, Kelly Hammond

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Bai Chongxi’s illustrious military career needs no introduction for military historians. What is less recognized is his influence on the development and integration of Chinese Muslims into the KMT’s national agenda during the War of Resistance. Bai leveraged his military positions to advance the aims of Chinese Muslims through his participation in the first national association for Chinese Muslims. By putting Bai’s military successes and failures during the War of Resistance into conversation with his efforts to mobilize Muslims, we see how his efforts were central to state making and nation building beyond the battlefield. In the ongoing reassessment of …

Trisc: Low-Cost Design Of Trigonometric Functions With Quasi Stochastic Computing, Mehran Shoushtari Moghadam, M. Hassan Najafi

Faculty Scholarship

Low-cost and hardware-efficient design of trigonometric functions is challenging. Stochastic computing (SC), an emerging computing model processing random bit-streams, offers promising solutions for this problem. The existing implementations, however, often overlook the importance of the data converters necessary to generate the needed bit-streams. While recent advancements in SC bit-stream generators focus on basic arithmetic operations such as multiplication and addition, energy-efficient SC design of non-linear functions demands attention to both the computation circuit and the bit-stream generator. This work introduces TriSC, a novel approach for SC-based design of trigonometric functions enjoying state-of-the-art (SOTA) quasi-random bit-streams. Unlike SOTA SC designs of …

Nanobubble Contrast Enhanced Ultrasound Imaging: A Review, Pinunta Nittayacharn, Felipe M. Berg, Dorian Durig, Agata A. Exner

Faculty Scholarship

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound is currently used worldwide with clinical indications in cardiology and radiology, and it continues to evolve and develop through innovative technological advancements. Clinically utilized contrast agents for ultrasound consist of hydrophobic gas microbubbles stabilized with a biocompatible shell. These agents are used commonly in echocardiography, with emerging applications in cancer diagnosis and therapy. Microbubbles are a blood pool agent with diameters between 1 and 10 μm, which precludes their use in other extravascular applications. To expand the potential use of contrast-enhanced ultrasound beyond intravascular applications, sub-micron agents, often called nanobubbles or ultra-fine bubbles, have recently emerged as a …

Martinez V. State Of Nevada, 140 Nev. Adv. Op. 1 (Nov. 7, 2024), Caren Abourjeily

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

The Nevada Supreme Court upheld Jesus Alberto Martinez, Jr.’s conviction for attempted child abuse involving sexual exploitation and solicitation of a minor for prostitution. Martinez made many arguments against his conviction, contending that the operation was an outrageous government act, violated due process, and that the jury received incorrect instructions on entrapment. In this case, the court clarified the entrapment defense and applied a factor test to evaluate outrageous government conduct. The court ultimately found that the jury instruction error was harmless and that Martinez’s intent was prevalent and at the forefront of his conviction, despite the absence of an …

OBJECTIVE: Lower socioeconomic status (SES) is a risk factor for poorer pain-related outcomes. Further, the neighborhood environments of disadvantaged communities can create a milieu of increased stress and deprivation that adversely affects pain-related and other health outcomes. Socioenvironmental variables such as the Area Deprivation Index, which ranks neighborhoods based on socioeconomic factors could be used to capture environmental aspects associated with poor pain outcomes. However, it is unclear whether the ADI could be used as a risk assessment tool in addition to individual-level SES.

METHODS: The current study investigated whether neighborhood-level disadvantage impacts knee pain-related outcomes above sociodemographic measures. Participants …

A Strategic Topology On Information Structures, Dirk Bergemann, Stephen Morris, Rafael Veiel Nov 2024

A Strategic Topology On Information Structures, Dirk Bergemann, Stephen Morris, Rafael Veiel

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Two information structures are said to be close if, with high probability, there is approximate common knowledge that interim beliefs are close under the two information structures. We define an “almost common knowledge topology” reflecting this notion of closeness. We show that it is the coarsest topology generating continuity of equilibrium outcomes. An information structure is said to be simple if each player has a finite set of types and each type has a distinct first-order belief about payoff states. We show that simple information structures are dense in the almost common knowledge topology and thus it is without loss …

WD repeat domain 83 opposite strand (WDR83OS) encodes the 106-aa (amino acid) protein Asterix, which heterodimerizes with CCDC47 to form the PAT (protein associated with ER translocon) complex. This complex functions as a chaperone for large proteins containing transmembrane domains to ensure proper folding. Until recently, little was known about the role of WDR83OS or CCDC47 in human disease traits. However, biallelic variants in CCDC47 were identified in four unrelated families with trichohepatoneurodevelopmental syndrome, characterized by a neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) with liver dysfunction. Three affected siblings in an additional family share a homozygous truncating WDR83OS variant and a phenotype of …

Upon presentation, 88.9% of patients with BM from sarcomas were symptomatic with the most common presenting …

Constraining Accreted Neutron Star Crust Shallow Heating With The Inferred Depth Of Carbon Ignition In X-Ray Superbursts, Zachary P. Meisel Nov 2024

Constraining Accreted Neutron Star Crust Shallow Heating With The Inferred Depth Of Carbon Ignition In X-Ray Superbursts, Zachary P. Meisel

Faculty Publications

Evidence has accumulated for an as-yet unaccounted for source of heat located at shallow depths within the accreted neutron star crust. However, the nature of this heat source is unknown. I demonstrate that the inferred depth of carbon ignition in X-ray superbursts can be used as an additional constraint for the magnitude and depth of shallow heating. The inferred shallow heating properties are relatively insensitive to the assumed crust composition and carbon fusion reaction rate. For low-accretion rates, the results are weakly dependent on the duration of the accretion outburst, so long as accretion has ensued for enough time to …

Deterministic Transport Of Coupled Energetic Light-Ions And Neutrons With Application To Inertial Confinement Fusion, Kyle Beling Nov 2024

Deterministic Transport Of Coupled Energetic Light-Ions And Neutrons With Application To Inertial Confinement Fusion, Kyle Beling

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

Numerical simulations of an inertial confinement fusion (ICF) target during the implosion process require high fidelity models of the radiation transport process. This work is interested in the transport of high-energy light-ions and neutrons in a background ICF plasma. As these energetic particles slow down, they experience knock-on (recoil) and thermonuclear (TN) collisions with the light-ions in the background plasma. These recoil and TN collisions excite the background light-ions causing them to transport through the plasma further exciting background light-ions. Mathematically, this cascading effect is described as a system of linear Boltzmann transport equations coupled through recoil and TN collision …

Power, Labor, And Hierarchies: Deconstructing Work In Speculative Fiction, Joseph Kevin Sebastian Nov 2024

Power, Labor, And Hierarchies: Deconstructing Work In Speculative Fiction, Joseph Kevin Sebastian

Library Faculty Research

In discussions of literary and speculative fiction, a persistent divide emerges regarding the modes and aims of each genre. Literary fiction generally aims to reflect the human condition in familiar, “realistic” terms, exploring characters, relationships, and narratives within existing social structures. In contrast, speculative fiction is characterized by what Darko Suvin identifies as the “the strange newness” of the novum: a radically new element or phenomenon that reshapes the fictional world. This paper argues that the novum in science fiction provides a unique framework for interrogating the relationships between labor, knowledge, and power, revealing how these constructs are contingent upon …

Strengthening Work Requirements? Forecasting Impacts Of Reforming Cash Assistance, Josep M. Nadal-Fernandez, Gabrielle Pepin, Kane Schrader Nov 2024

Strengthening Work Requirements? Forecasting Impacts Of Reforming Cash Assistance, Josep M. Nadal-Fernandez, Gabrielle Pepin, Kane Schrader

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

Work requirements are perhaps the most controversial aspect of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, America’s sole federal cash assistance program for low-income families with children. In 2025, for the first time in nearly 20 years, the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 (FRA) will implement policy changes intended to strengthen states’ work requirements. However, researcher’ and policymakers’ understanding of how FRA will impact states’ compliance with federal requirements is hampered by a lack of research and publicly available data.
