Cutaneous Adverse Effects From Diabetes Devices In Pediatric Patients With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: Systematic Review, Alicia Podwojniak, Joseph Flemming, Isabella J Tan, Hira Ghani, Zachary Neubauer, Anne Jones

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

BACKGROUND: Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and continuous subcutaneous insulin infusions (CSIIs) are the current standard treatment devices for type 1 diabetes (T1D) management. With a high prevalence of T1D beginning in pediatrics and carrying into adulthood, insufficient glycemic control leads to poor patient outcomes. Dermatologic complications such as contact dermatitis, lipodystrophies, and inflammatory lesions are among those associated with CGM and CSII, which reduce glycemic control and patient compliance.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to explore the current literature surrounding dermatologic complications of CGM and CSII as well as the impact on patient outcomes.

METHODS: A systematic review of the …

Investigating The Role Of Peat Moss In Sage Plant Growth, Lilianna Wrenne, Lindsey Powell, Victoria Rylan Wolkonowski, Fatema Al-Hemoud, Darlene Panvini

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

This research examined the effect peat moss (Sphagnum flexuosum) had on growth of garden sage (Salvia officinalis). Sage has been used for centuries in traditional medicine for various health benefits. Sage grows best in cooler seasons, but with rising temperatures and longer seasons of heat and humidity, it may be harder to cultivate. Since peat moss helps maintain moisture while fixing carbon and nitrogen levels in the surrounding soil, it might promote healthier sage plant growth. Three sage plants were grown in sheets of peat moss (experimental) and three plants were grown alone (control) on Belmont’s …

A Protocol For Immunostaining Of Macrophages In Whole-Mount Mouse Cornea, Conjunctiva, And Lacrimal Gland, Saleh Alfuraih, Dhruv Patel, Wonsuk Choi, Karthikeyan Ramasamy, Rais Ansari, Ajay Sharma

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

The healthy lacrimal functional unit contains a resident macrophage population. Here, we present a protocol for immunofluorescent staining of macrophage markers, CD11b, F4/80, and CD206, in whole-mount mouse cornea, conjunctiva, and 50-μM-thick lacrimal gland section. We describe steps for dissection, fixation, permeabilization, and blocking. We then detail procedures for the detection and spatial localization of macrophages through immunostaining and confocal imaging. This approach circumvents the need to obtain thin tissue sections and acquire macrophage images from each tissue section.

Executive Summary: Quality Improvement Initiative Personalized Interdisciplinary Fall Prevention Plan And Fall Rates At An Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital, Kayla Jackson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Despite ongoing fall prevention strategies, falls continue to be a concern across healthcare organizations. There has been an identified increase in the fall rate at an inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF) in the southeastern United States. An interprofessional and collaborative approach to fall prevention has been found to lead to a decrease in falls with injury and an increase in the culture of safety. This doctor of nursing practice (DNP) project involved an evaluation of a quality improvement (QI) initiative of a personalized interdisciplinary fall prevention plan at a rehabilitation hospital located in the southeastern region of the United States. The …

Identification And Treatment Of Ipv/Nonfatal Strangulation By First Responders, Mary L. Turner

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Ineffective and inconsistent education focusing on domestic violence (DV)/intimate partner violence (IPV)/nonfatal strangulation identification and treatments results in first responders’ failure to move patients to a higher level of care, resulting in possible delayed complications. The purpose of the Doctor of Nursing practice (DNP) project was to determine if an educational program increased first responders’ knowledge and improved treatment of DV/IPV/nonfatal strangulation patients. Roger’s diffusion of innovation theory provided the framework throughout the educational process. The Physician Readiness to Manage Intimate Partner Violence Survey (PREMIS) tool was utilized to score the participants’ knowledge prior to and after the education. The …

Biodegradable Polymeric Microspheres For Magnetically Guided Drug Delivery To Tumors, Tyler Payson Green Nov 2024

Biodegradable Polymeric Microspheres For Magnetically Guided Drug Delivery To Tumors, Tyler Payson Green

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the feasibility of utilizing biodegradable polymeric microspheres loaded with the anticancer drug 5-fluorouracil (5FU) and superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) to magnetically deliver the cancer therapeutic 5FU to a target tumor in the human body. The primary method of material loading consisted of a w/o/w double emulsion mechanism which 1) loads and protects 5FU in the inner water phase consisting of distilled water and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), 2) dispersed SPIONs in the biodegradable polymeric organic phase consisting of methylene chloride (MeCl2) for eventual magnetic transport, and 3) suspended these w/o emulsion droplets in an outer aqueous phase …

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi’S Effect On Lemon Balm Growth, Alissia D. Fulton, Oliver M. Banks, Tatum P. Fortney, Darlene Panvini Phd

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

As used by Indigenous tribes throughout the Great Plains, lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) can be used for herbal remedies, ritualistic ceremonies, and culinary dishes. Studies show arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi improve nutrient uptake, stress tolerance, root growth, and disease resistance in their symbiotic plant relationships. From September to November 2024, 12 lemon balm plants were planted on the green roof at Belmont University. Half of them were treated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi; half of them were a control group. The control group grew more leaves than the fungi group. However, the fungi group grew taller than the control group. The inoculation …
