How Leaf Size Affects Rate Of Leaf Litter Decomposition On A Greenroof, Douglass J. Lescher I, Makenzie T. Boylston, Faith A. Jackson, Leah Abraham, Darlene Panvini Nov 2024

How Leaf Size Affects Rate Of Leaf Litter Decomposition On A Greenroof, Douglass J. Lescher I, Makenzie T. Boylston, Faith A. Jackson, Leah Abraham, Darlene Panvini

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Leaf litter decomposition is an essential biological phenomenon that occurs within ecosystems, as it affects factors such as nutrient cycling, plant growth, soil fertility and other processes. Understanding the mechanisms that are attributed to leaf litter decomposition can help explain the role that leaf litter plays in ecosystems. A total of eight leaf litter bags were placed in environments of similar conditions on a green roof with the purpose of understanding how leaf size affects the rate of decomposition. The two species of variable size were coneflower (Echinacea tennesseensis, larger leaf) and baptisia (Baptisia australis, smaller …

Protonation Of Terbium Complexes As A Possible Chemical Sensor, Sean W. Murray Nov 2024

Protonation Of Terbium Complexes As A Possible Chemical Sensor, Sean W. Murray

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Upon ultraviolet excitation, terbium(III)-ligand complexes exhibit strong yellow-green fluorescence in accordance with the antenna effect. Recent studies in our laboratory show remarkable quenching of the emission signature upon exposure of homoleptic complexes to water or mineral acids. The changes are completely reversible under mild conditions, suggesting possible applications as a chemical sensor. Following the synthesis of [Tb(pydm)3](NO3)3 (pydm = 2,6-pyridine dimethanol), the complex was titrated with HCl and the changing absorption spectra of the complex was monitored through ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. Further, we have purified and characterized this product through 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR. A deeper understanding of the reactions causing the …

Essays On Immigration And International Trade, Agostina Brinatti Nov 2024

Essays On Immigration And International Trade, Agostina Brinatti

Dissertation Awards

This dissertation studies the welfare and production effects of immigration and international trade, and how the two effects interact in the globalized economy. In Chapter I, Xing Guo and I study how the U.S. restrictions on skilled immigration affect the Canadian economy and the welfare of American workers. In 2017, there was a policy that tightened the eligibility criteria for U.S. visas and was immediately followed by a trend break in the number of skilled immigrant admissions to Canada. We use quasi-experimental variation introduced by this policy over time and across immigrant groups, along with U.S. and Canadian visa application …

Michigan Tech Publications

The origin of high-energy galactic cosmic rays is yet to be understood, but some galactic cosmic-ray accelerators can accelerate cosmic rays up to PeV energies. The high-energy cosmic rays are expected to interact with the surrounding material or radiation, resulting in the production of gamma-rays and neutrinos. To optimize for the detection of such associated production of gamma-rays and neutrinos for a given source morphology and spectrum, a multimessenger analysis that combines gamma-rays and neutrinos is required. In this study, we use the MultiMission Maximum Likelihood framework with IceCube Maximum Likelihood Analysis software and HAWC Accelerated Likelihood to search for …

Perceptions Of Teachers About The Factors That Contribute To Recurring Chronic Absenteeism In Grades K-8, Jamie Routhier

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Even with federal and state interventions, the number of K-8 students labeled as chronically absent continues to increase. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to investigate teacher perceptions about the increasing student absences at Central Maine School District, and suggestions to reduce the number of student absences in Grades K-8. The conceptual framework for this study was Bronfenbrenner’s socioecological theory, which states that humans are affected by the people in their daily lives, from home and school. A basic qualitative study was used, gathering data through semistructured interviews with twelve K-8 classroom teachers through purposeful sampling. Data were …

Relationship Between Counselor Educators’ Intrinsic Religiosity, Multicultural Counseling Competence, And Spiritual Competence, Theresa Lynn Brixius

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Religion and spirituality are vital components of multicultural competence, which are key ethical guidelines outlined by the American Counseling Association and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. Clients have reported that religion and spirituality are important in their lives; however, counseling students commonly feel unprepared in their training to address the topic with clients. Grounded in multicultural counseling theory (MCT) and namaste theory, the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to describe the relationship between counselor educators’ intrinsic religiosity (IR), multicultural counseling competence (MCC), and spiritual competence (SC). Participants included fifty-six doctoral-level counselor educators recruited …

Essays In Public And Labor Economics, Sara Spaziani Nov 2024

Essays In Public And Labor Economics, Sara Spaziani

Dissertation Awards

In this dissertation, I study how public policies and economic shocks impact workers, employers, and the structure of the labor market, aiming to inform optimal policy design and reduce existing inequalities. Chapter 1 studies the optimal design of unemployment insurance financing policies, comparing two approaches to assign unemployment tax rates to employers: assigning individualized rates in proportion to the benefit spending resulting from employers’ layoffs (experience rating) and assigning the same tax rate to all the employers (coinsurance). I derive a sufficient-statistics formula defining the optimal degree of experience rating through a tradeoff between the marginal benefits and costs of …

Educating Project Site Hospital Nurses On The Code Lavender, Jennifer Swendsen Nov 2024

Educating Project Site Hospital Nurses On The Code Lavender, Jennifer Swendsen

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

With this staff education project, I aimed to educate nurses at the project site hospital about the Code Lavender program, a mental health intervention designed to address nurse burnout. Nurse burnout has risen significantly post-COVID-19 pandemic, contributing to high turnover rates and compromising patient care. Nurses are experiencing increased levels of stress, depression, and suicidal ideation, which has led to feelings of being overwhelmed, overworked, and quitting the profession, exacerbating staffing shortages and patient care hazards. The central question of this project was whether staff education on the Code Lavender program would increase nurses’ knowledge, as evidenced by improved posttest …

Biology Faculty Publications

Dried, salted fish (Sardinella spp.), locally known as tuyo, is a Filipino food staple. Pandawan fisherfolk consider tuyo processing as their main source of livelihood. This study determined the relation of post-harvest practices with the physicochemical and microbiological quality of tuyo. Tuyo processing involves receiving, washing, salting, rinsing, sun-drying, pressing, cooling, and packaging. Although the documented tuyo processing complied with the code of practice, processors needed to follow Good Manufacturing Practices. Moreover, tuyo had lower salt content (7.77-9.08 %NaCl), higher water activity (0.79-0.81), and aerobic plate count (7.82-8.36 log CFU/g) compared to national standards. Its yeast and mold count (3.58-3.66 …
