Cysticercosis is a parasitic infection and neglected tropical disease caused by Taenia solium, or the pork tapeworm. Cysticercosis with central nervous system involvement, or neurocysticercosis, is a leading cause of chronic headaches and epilepsy in endemic regions, including Latin America and Asia. In the United States, the epidemiology of cysticercosis has not been well described. We conducted a cross-section serosurvey of Mexican-American adults residing along the Texas–Mexico border (Starr County, Texas) and identified an overall seroprevalence of 7.4% (45/605) for cysticercosis. Brain imaging studies conducted on seropositive study participants identified lesions consistent with calcified neurocysticercosis in 2 of the …
Control Of Multiagent Networks With Misbehaving Nodes, Emre Yildirim
Control Of Multiagent Networks With Misbehaving Nodes, Emre Yildirim
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The overarching objective of this dissertation is to introduce system theoretical frameworks in control of misbehaving multiagent networks subject to limited resources (i.e., limited number of driver nodes), and the presence of disturbances and/or uncertainties (i.e., misbehaving nodes). Below, we briefly summarize each problem studied in this dissertation with their proposed solutions.
Specifically, we first consider multiagent networks subject to misbehaving nodes over fixed undirected graph topologies. To address this problem, we apply proportional-integral control signals to a subset of nodes (i.e., driver nodes) in the network to address the undesired effects arising from misbehaving nodes. Since multiagent networks with …

Youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) face challenges that increase their susceptibility to HIV/STIs. Nurse case management is effective in managing the complex needs of populations experiencing homelessness and reducing HIV risk. A randomized wait-list control study conducted between September 2019 to May 2023 evaluated the CAYA “Come As You Are” intervention. This nurse-led HIV prevention for YEH aged 16–25 years focused on the uptake of HIV prevention methods: pre- and post-HIV exposure prophylaxis (PrEP, nPEP), HIV/STI testing and treatment, sober sex, and condom use. Secondarily, we examined intervention impact on housing stability. Descriptive statistics were calculated by study arm. Multiple imputation …
Precursors To Student Burnout Through A Person-Environment Fit Lens, Kenny Le
Precursors To Student Burnout Through A Person-Environment Fit Lens, Kenny Le
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Burnout has been shown to be a pressing mental health outcome across populations, and this phenomenon has received more recent attention in young adult and student populations with increasing evidence mirroring what has previously been found in workplace research. However, the current research has not yet developed a theoretical model towards student burnout specifically, and the existing multidimensional theory of burnout does not capture precursors towards the first stages of the syndrome. The current study uses the person-environment (P-E) fit as a framework to identify relevant environmental and individual factors, as research has suggested perceived environmental fit is associated with …

Interest in winter limnology is growing rapidly, but progress is hindered by a shortage of standardized multivariate datasets on winter conditions. Addressing the winter data gap will enhance our understanding of winter ecosystem function and of lake response to environmental change. Here, we describe a dataset generated by a multi-institutional winter sampling campaign across all five Laurentian Great Lakes and some of their connecting waters (the Great Lakes Winter Grab). The objective of Winter Grab was to characterize mid-winter limnological conditions in the Great Lakes using standard sample collection and analysis methods. Nineteen research groups sampled 49 locations varying widely …

Modern computing systems are primarily designed for maximum performance, which inadvertently introduces vulnerabilities at the micro-architecture level. While cache side-channel analysis has received significant attention, other Central Processing Units (CPUs) components like the Translation Lookaside Buffer (TLB) can also be exploited to leak sensitive information. This paper focuses on the TLB, a micro-architecture component that is vulnerable to side-channel attacks. Despite the coarse granularity at the page level, advancements in tools and techniques have made TLB information leakage feasible. The primary goal of this study is not to demonstrate the potential for information leakage from the TLB but to establish …

Accelerated Structure Formation: The Early Emergence Of Massive Galaxies And Clusters Of Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh
Accelerated Structure Formation: The Early Emergence Of Massive Galaxies And Clusters Of Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh
Faculty Scholarship
Galaxies in the early Universe appear to have grown too big too fast, assembling into massive, monolithic objects more rapidly than anticipated in the hierarchical Lambda cold dark matter (ΛCDM) structure formation paradigm. The available photometric data are consistent with there being a population of massive galaxies that form early (z ≳ 10) and quench rapidly over a short (≲1 Gyr) timescale, consistent with the traditional picture for the evolution of giant elliptical galaxies. Similarly, kinematic observations as a function of redshift show that massive spirals and their scaling relations were in place at early times. Explaining the early emergence …

Fragmented Selves: Introducing Students To Archival Research And Historical Representations, Sophie Downing
Communication: Faculty Scholarship
This multi-part activity introduces students to archival research and the questions of historical representations, “accuracy,” and social media. Consisting of the creation of a personal archive (either in the form of one of their social media profiles or a curated collection of photos) and two short papers, this unit-long activity acts as an effective avenue to explore complex historiographical topics and to develop critical thinking and analysis skills. Variations of this activity would be well-suited for courses in rhetoric, media studies, cultural studies, or broader research methods courses.

Cryptosporidium sp. is a gastroenteritis-causing pathogen that may increase mortality and morbidity in immunocompromised patients. Diarrhea is a common problem among acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients, with 30–60% of patients in developed countries and 90% in developing countries affected. The prevalence of cryptosporidiosis is 3–5% of the global population, with 14.42% of those affected being immunocompromised. There is currently no vaccine available to prevent cryptosporidiosis, while nitazoxanide monotherapy is ineffective in eradicating the organism in immunocompromised hosts and malnourished children. This study aimed to determine the most effective combination therapy for cryptosporidiosis in immunocompromised patients. This study used a systematic …

We conduct an Euler-Lagrange, direct numerical simulation of a turbulent channel flow at a shear Reynolds number of Reτ=180 over an erodible particle bed. The particle bed consists of approximately 1.3 × 106 monodisperse particles, resulting in a bed thickness of around 12–13 particles. The particle density and size are chosen to achieve a ratio of 4 for the Shields stress to the critical Shields stress necessary for incipient motion such that particle transport occurs primarily as bedload. The simulation is run long enough for ripples to form. We track the temporal evolution of the particle flux and excess …

BACKGROUND: Patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) undergoing thoracic radiation are at high cardiovascular risk. Semiquantitative assessment of coronary artery calcification (CAC) on baseline planning non-gated chest computed tomography (CT) scans may help further risk stratify patients.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to characterize the association between CAC and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE; myocardial infarction or stroke) and assess the utility of semiquantitative assessment of CAC.
METHODS: Patients with NSCLC with non-contrast planning chest CT scans were evaluated for CAC. Planning scans were visually graded using the CAC-DRS method, stratifying patients into no, mild, moderate, and severe CAC groups. …

Stress hyperglycaemia is common in critical illness. We have previously observed that increasing severity of respiratory failure in patients with severe COVID-19 is associated with increased insulin demand. Given previously reported direct effects of hypoxia on insulin action, we reasoned that rapid improvements in oxygenation following prone positioning may improve insulin sensitivity and increase risk of hypoglycaemia. A retrospective multi-centre service evaluation comparing blood glucose and insulin administration in patients with COVID-19 pneumonitis receiving prone mechanical ventilation, comparing the 16 h pre-prone and 16 h post-prone time periods. 155 patients were included in this analysis. Oxygenation improved significantly following prone …

D-Limonene Suppresses Rankl-Induced Osteoclast Differentiation And Promotes Osteoblast Activity In-Vitro, Simon Fox, Lynn Mccallum
School of Biomedical Sciences
Treatments for osteoporosis are typically given post-fracture. Therefore, identifying safe prophylactic interventions to reduce fracture risk would be beneficial. One approach is to utilise the bioactive properties of natural compounds to modify osteoclast and osteoblast activity. D-limonene a well-tolerated, anti-inflammatory monoterpene found in citrus fruits holds promise due to its suppressive effect on NFκB, a key regulator of bone cell activity. We found that limonene promoted osteoblast differentiation and bone nodule formation and inhibited RANKL-indued osteoclast formation and bone resorption in-vitro. Limonene also reduced the pro-resorptive signal provided by osteoblast, augmenting markers of osteoblast differentiation (alkaline phosphatase, osterix and osteocalcin) …

Baseline Factors And Their Association With Refractive Error And Control In A Pediatric Randomized Clinical Trial Of Overminus Therapy For Intermittent Exotropia, Julianne L. Robinson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Intermittent exotropia (IXT) is a condition resulting in an eye deviation away from normal alignment, potentially treatable with overminus lenses. These induce accommodation of the eye, combatting the eye drifting outward. Overminus lenses may help treat IXT but also potentially worsen refractive error. Analyses aimed to find associations of baseline factors as they relate to IXT control outcomes, as well as the risk of worsening spherical equivalent refractive error (SER). One hundred ninety-six participants aged 3 to <11 treated with overminus lenses for 12 months were analyzed to explore associations between age, sex, race, ethnicity, strabismus severity, accommodative convergence/accommodation ratio (AC/A), and baseline SER with outcomes of change in SER and change in control. Analyses included outcomes for both SER and control as continuous and binary outcomes, and a secondary combined outcome. More myopic baseline refractive error and older age were associated with a worsening in SER after 12 months, -0.08 diopters (D) worsening SER per 1 year age increase (95% CI -0.13 to -0.03), and -0.30 D worsening SER per additional 1 D of myopic refractive error (95% CI -0.39 to -0.21). A larger AC/A ratio was associated with better distance control (0.11 points improvement per D of AC/A, 95% CI 0.03 to 0.19). The combined SER and control outcome showed the same factors (age, baseline refractive error, and AC/A ratio) were significantly associated with improving outcomes. Overminus lens therapy may be beneficial for some patients, but further study is needed to explore the results of these exploratory analyses.

Members of the Bacteroidota compose a large portion of the human gut microbiota, contributing to overall gut health via the degradation of various polysaccharides. This process is facilitated by lipoproteins, globular proteins anchored to the cell surface by a lipidated N-terminal cysteine. Despite their importance, lipoprotein synthesis by these bacteria is understudied. In

Skeletal muscle actin (ACTA1) mutations are a prevalent cause of skeletal myopathies consistent with ACTA1's high expression in skeletal muscle. Rare de novo mutations in ACTA1 associated with combined cardiac and skeletal myopathies have been reported, but ACTA1 represents only ~20% of the total actin pool in cardiomyocytes, making its role in cardiomyopathy controversial. Here we demonstrate how a mutation in an actin isoform expressed at low levels in cardiomyocytes can cause cardiomyopathy by focusing on a unique ACTA1 variant, R256H. We previously identified this variant in a family with dilated cardiomyopathy, who had reduced systolic function without clinical skeletal …

Digital map applications offer a location saving feature that enables users to save locations that they want to visit in the future. However, such applications do not provide proactive notifications of when a user is near a saved location, and instead, require the user to look up their lists to determine if they are near a saved location, which can cause them to miss opportunities to visit places of interest. This disclosure describes techniques to enable a digital map application to proactively provide suggestions for locations to visit that are saved by a user, by their friends, or by other …

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
This thesis investigates atmospheric aerosol concentrations, with a particular focus on the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The study maps the spatial and temporal variations in Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) and characterizes aerosols using high-resolution Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) products. The primary objective of this research is to enhance the understanding of aerosol dynamics in the UAE by distinguishing between natural and anthropogenic aerosols through the Angström Exponent (AE) and assessing their impacts on local climate, air quality, and public health. The study employs Remote Sensing (RS) techniques to conduct detailed environmental assessments, analyzing AOD variability across daily, monthly, seasonal, …
