Genetic Associations Of Il-2 (Rs2069762) And Egr3 (Rs3750192) Polymorphisms With Schizophrenia: A Meta-Analysis, Anu Shibi Anilkumar, Sheena Mariam Thomas, Ramakrishnan Veerabathiran
Folia Medica Indonesiana
Highlights:
1.The novelty of this study lies in its thorough examination of gene polymorphisms and their associations with schizophrenia risk across different populations.
2.This meta-analysis provides new insights by highlighting the lack of reliable association for interleukin-2 (IL-2) rs2069762 and revealing a substantial protective effect of early growth response 3 (EGR3) rs3750192 in specific ethnic groups, particularly among Polish and Chinese.
Abstract
Although genome-wide association studies have identified numerous genes linked to schizophrenia, their specific roles remain unclear. This meta-analysis sought to explore the association of polymorphisms in the interleukin-2 (IL-2) rs2069762 and early growth response 3 (EGR3) rs3750192 with …

The term “offshore” with regards to aquaculture has hitherto encompassed various perspectives, including technology, geographic location, legal jurisdiction, and more. To resolve the ambiguity in this term and understand its implications for current and future aquaculture development, “offshore” should be resolved into two separate metrics: distance from shore and energy exposure. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) distinguishes between internal waters, territorial sea, contiguous zone, exclusive economic zone (EEZ), and the high seas, but currently has no precise definition for “offshore” in its provisions, and therefore no applicable laws pertaining to “offshore” aquaculture. Regulating a …

Where and under what conditions the transfer of energy between electromagnetic fields and particles takes place in the solar wind remains an open question. We investigate the conditions that promote the growth of kinetic instabilities predicted by linear theory to infer how turbulence and temperature-anisotropy-driven instabilities are interrelated. Using a large dataset from Solar Orbiter, we introduce the radial rate of strain, a novel measure computed from single-spacecraft data, which we interpret as a proxy for the double-adiabatic strain rate. The solar wind exhibits high absolute values of the radial rate of strain at locations with large temperature anisotropy. We …

Pathways To A Diverse Legal Academy: Pipeline Programs After Sffa, Steven W. Bender
Pathways To A Diverse Legal Academy: Pipeline Programs After Sffa, Steven W. Bender
Seattle University Law Review Online
Responding to the Supreme Court’s 2023 Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President & Fellows of Harvard College (SFFA) decision invalidating race-conscious admission policies in a public and private university, I urge an emphasis on pipeline programs to ensure law school admissions pools include racially diverse applicants. I detail my school’s pipeline programs for high school, college students, and recent college graduates—both as these programs were implemented before the Court’s decision and as they changed in its wake—as examples of what law schools generally, and collectively, should be doing. Most importantly, I focus on the lawful recruitment, design, and content …
Strategically Addressing Transportation Barriers To Primary Care In Rural Clinics, Regina L. Atkins
Strategically Addressing Transportation Barriers To Primary Care In Rural Clinics, Regina L. Atkins
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many rural primary care clinics have limited transportation resources, and this affects patients’ ability to receive health care services. The purpose of this integrative review was to synthesize findings and recommendations to solve existing patient transportation barriers in rural clinics. Levesque’s conceptual framework supported this review through exploration, assessment, and measurement of access in primary care clinics. A search of empirical and nonempirical sources was conducted to determine themes and subthemes that could provide solutions and best practices related to rural transportation needs. Over 100 articles were initially chosen, and 23 articles were deemed appropriate for further analysis. As a …

Evaluating The Impact Of Semiglutide On Weight Loss In Overweight Adults, Justina 0. Umweni-Oyiboke
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Obesity is a pressing health issue. By 2030, it is estimated that nearly half of all adults in the United States will be obese. This trend has serious consequences for both physical and mental health. Obese individuals face an increased risk of conditions like cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, osteoarthritis, and even depression. In this Doctor of Nursing Practice Project, I evaluated the effectiveness of a quality improvement (QI) initiative at the project site that addressed the practice problem of inadequate weight loss management caused by relying solely on diet and exercise as treatment strategies. The QI …
Closing The Gaps: Optimizing Emergency Department Protocols For Vaping-Related Respiratory Illnesses, Dominique Roy
Closing The Gaps: Optimizing Emergency Department Protocols For Vaping-Related Respiratory Illnesses, Dominique Roy
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The rising prevalence of vaping-related illnesses poses significant challenges for healthcare systems worldwide. Hospitals increasingly encounter patients with symptoms related to vaping, such as respiratory issues and lung injuries, which strain emergency departments (EDs). Addressing these challenges requires the development and implementation of effective standard operating procedures (SOPs) to enhance the diagnosis and treatment of vaping-related illnesses. This integrative review examined how SOPs can enhance clinical practices within hospitals by identifying gaps in current approaches and providing recommendations to improve patient care. The review, analyzing literature from 2016 to 2023, highlighted several important themes, including the necessity of standardized protocols …

Concealed Cognitive Disabilities, Bullying In The Workplace, And The Americans With Disabilities Act, Craig Darrell Taylor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This qualitative study uniquely explores the perceptions of individuals with concealable cognitive disabilities (CCDs) regarding Titles I–III of the Americans with Disabilities Act and its amendments (ADAAA). The research addresses a significant gap in understanding this population’s views on workplace experiences, particularly in the context of harassment, privacy, self-identification, and labeling. Using Schneider and Ingram’s social construction framework to examine societal power dynamics, the study analyzed interviews with eight participants, employing rigorous thematic coding. The analysis revealed four key themes: social construction (perception in the workplace and the power of employment protections), disability (cognitive disabilities and the challenges of disclosure …

Association Between Adults’ Perceptions Of Their Parents’ Parenting Behaviors During Youth And Resulting Attachment Dimensions In Adulthood In The Native American Community, Christine Marie Summering
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Forced assimilation of Native American peoples has led to the destruction of their traditional ways of life and contributed to heightened rates of Native American children in foster care, increased domestic violence, substance abuse, alcoholism, and poverty. The purpose of this study was to understand associations between perceived parenting behaviors and current adult attachment within Native American communities and whether those associations were moderated by historical loss. The attachment theory and historical trauma theory were used as theoretical foundations for the study. Research questions for this nonexperimental quantitative study involved associations between warmth and involvement and anxious and avoidant attachment …

State Capacity And Covid-19 Responses: Comparing The Us States, Kiran Auerbach, Joshua Y. Lerner, Hannah M. Ridge
State Capacity And Covid-19 Responses: Comparing The Us States, Kiran Auerbach, Joshua Y. Lerner, Hannah M. Ridge
Political Science Faculty Articles and Research
This article addresses the interstate differences in outcomes from the coronavirus disease COVID-19 pandemic by focusing on state capacity. State capacity refers to states’ ability to create and implement policy. We posit that states want to limit death and destruction within their borders. COVID-19 created an instance in which states had a shared, preferred outcome but had very different levels of success. Using a novel measure of state capacity that allows for subnational comparisons – and is independent of ideological political will – we show that states with greater capacity experienced fewer excess deaths during 2020 and more successfully distributed …

Educator Perceptions Of The Use Of Technology To Teach Digital Literacy In Urban High School Classrooms, Jessica Erin Dennis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
To engage interests and connect with 21st-century learners, educators must be able to effectively use technologies in their classrooms. The problem this study addressed was the limited understanding that language arts educators in urban school districts have of effectively using technological tools while teaching digital literacy. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore high school language arts teachers’ perceptions of the use of technology to teach digital literacy in urban school classrooms. The technology acceptance model was the conceptual framework used for this study, which aided in the discovery of how language arts educators gauge the usefulness …

Discovering Strategies To Lead Teams Abruptly Forced Into Virtual Environments Due To The Covid-19 Pandemic, Shonelle Maria Ramserran
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
COVID-19 was an unprecedented time in the global economy, causing a massive shift for many organizations conducting business. The speed at which organizations needed to implement World Health Organization’s restrictions and transition their teams from face-to-face to virtual environments was unpredictable. The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore what leaders prepared for an organization to cope with situations like COVID-19 when abruptly moving employees from face-to-face to virtual environments. A conceptual framework based on the organizational change theory and the team adaptation theory was used to direct this study. The research question address what strategies leaders …

The Relative Strength Of Populist Attitudes, Religiosity, And Locus Of Control In Predicting Climate-Change Denial, Ryan Reynaldo Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
As climate change becomes an increasingly urgent global issue, the persistence of climate denial presents a significant barrier to progress. Despite overwhelming scientific evidence from NOAA and NASA, many individuals continue to deny the reality or severity of climate change. Previous studies have examined factors like anti-elitism and anti-egalitarianism in climate skepticism; however, no known research has assessed the relative strength of populist attitudes, religiosity, and locus of control in predicting climate denial. This quantitative, cross-sectional survey was conducted to fill that gap. Locus of control theory, which focuses on how individuals perceive events as within or beyond their control, …

Through the use of genetic sequencing, molecular variants driving autoimmunity are increasingly identified in patients with chronic and refractory immune cytopenias. With the goal of discovering genetic variants that predispose to pediatric immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) or increase risk for chronic disease, we conducted a genome-wide association study in a large multi-institutional cohort of pediatric patients with ITP. A total of 591 patients were genotyped using an Illumina Global Screening Array BeadChip. Six variants met genome-wide significance in comparison between children with ITP and a cohort of healthy children. One variant in NAV2 was inversely associated with ITP (adjusted odds ratio …

What Motivates The Choice To Custom Hire Pest Management Spraying Services?, Braeden Van Deye, Trey Malone
What Motivates The Choice To Custom Hire Pest Management Spraying Services?, Braeden Van Deye, Trey Malone
Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND
This article presents a model of how farmers choose to custom hire for pest control. The decision-making process is illustrated through a discrete choice experiment conducted via a pilot survey of soybean growers in Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana. Farmers responded to a hypothetical pest infestation by choosing between custom operators, spraying on their own, or leaving the field to its fate.
RESULTS
Among farmers who choose to spray, the mean willingness to pay for marginal increases in timeliness (as defined as the chance of late spraying) ranges from 37 to 52 cents per acre. We also find that farmers …

Imagine Lagos : Mapping History, Place, And Politics In A Nineteenth-Century African City, Ademide Adelusi-Adeluyi
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
Written from a digital humanities perspective, this book combines historical sources, maps, and a walking cartography to create new perspectives on the nineteenth-century history of Lagos, West Africa’s most populous city.
What traces do people leave in the places where they live, and even where they die? This book addresses the spatial history of nineteenth-century Lagos, rebuilding its past as a series of encounters: between men and women, between past and present, between enslaved and free, between living and dead, and finally between land and lagoon. In Imagine Lagos, Ademide Adelusi-Adeluyi argues that the invention, destruction, and reinvention of spatial …
