Exploring The Journey Of Stem Faculty Into Justice-Centered Pedagogy, Desiree Forsythe, Bryan Dewsbury, Jeremy L. Hsu

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

In higher education and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), interlocking oppressions can lead to inequitable environments for those who hold marginalized identities. Instructors can play key roles in either exacerbating or mitigating these inequities through their pedagogical approaches and choice of curricular material. However, it remains unclear how instructors who self-identify as committed to justice achieve higher levels of consciousness around areas of injustice and develop the self-efficacy to dismantle barriers for students over time. Here, we draw upon critical race theory and critical white studies to investigate what events or life experiences influence STEM instructors to understand the …

Gatekeeper Competition Policy, Herbert Hovenkamp Nov 2024

Gatekeeper Competition Policy, Herbert Hovenkamp

Michigan Technology Law Review

Antitrust policy in the United States has always had special rules for dominant firms. As Justice Scalia once observed:

Where a defendant maintains substantial market power, his activities are examined through a special lens: Behavior that might otherwise not be of concern to the antitrust laws—or that might even be viewed as procompetitive—can take on exclusionary connotations when practiced by a monopolist.

JWST observations of the young Galactic supernova remnant Cassiopeia A revealed an unexpected structure seen as a green emission feature in colored composite MIRI F1130W and F1280W images—hence dubbed the Green Monster—that stretches across the central parts of the remnant in projection. Combining the kinematic information from NIRSpec and the MIRI Medium Resolution Spectrograph with the multiwavelength imaging from NIRCam and MIRI, we associate the Green Monster with circumstellar material (CSM) that was lost during an asymmetric mass-loss phase. MIRI images are dominated by dust emission, but their spectra show emission lines from Ne, H, and Fe with low radial …

Ski Jumping Tournaments At Mt. Rainier, 1917 - 1924: Washington’S Start As A National Ski Jumping Center, John W. Lundin

Works by Local Authors

SKI JUMPING ORIGINATED IN NORWAY & WAS BROUGHT TO THIS COUNTRY BY IMMIGRANTS Ski jumping originated in Norway, where it was part of normal skiing. National championship tournaments have been held at Oslo’s Holmenkollen Hill since 1892, with the winner getting the King’s Cup. Immigrants brought the sport to this country. Between 1870 and 1910, 1.5 million Scandinavians immigrated to the U.S., most settling along its Northern Tier. By 1930, 1.1 million residents were born in Norway or had parents that were, and 47% lived in New York City, Minneapolis or Seattle.

Streamlining The Discharge Process On The Telemetry Units To Improve Overall Hospital Throughput, Michelle Corder Nov 2024

Streamlining The Discharge Process On The Telemetry Units To Improve Overall Hospital Throughput, Michelle Corder

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This evidence-based staff education project was implemented to address the problem of ineffective discharge processes and delayed discharges within the hospital setting that leads to poor patient flow impacting overall hospital throughput. There was an overall lack of knowledge by registered nurses (RNs) on effectively implementing changes that affect a standardized discharge process that could help improve patient flow and hospital throughput. This staff educational project aimed to improve the staff nurses’ knowledge of the standardized discharge process and its impact on hospital throughput. The practice-focused question that guided this project was as follows: “What is the impact of a …

Stratigraphy And Geochronology Of The Eocene Volcanosedimentary Units In The Hekimhan-Darende (Malatya) Region: Implications For The Development Of The Gürün Curl, Emrah Yalçin Ersoy, Osman Candan, İbrahi̇m Uysal Nov 2024

Stratigraphy And Geochronology Of The Eocene Volcanosedimentary Units In The Hekimhan-Darende (Malatya) Region: Implications For The Development Of The Gürün Curl, Emrah Yalçin Ersoy, Osman Candan, İbrahi̇m Uysal

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

We present new radiometric (Ar-Ar) age data from the volcanic rocks occurring in the Eocene strata in the Hekimhan and Gürün-Darende (Malaya) regions. The Eocene units in these regions are represented separately by the Tohma and Darende formations, respectively. The two basaltic volcanic interlayers in the Tohma Formation, occurring in the lower and upper parts of the succession yielded Ar-Ar isochron ages of 51.75±0.76 and 42.66±0.43 Ma, respectively, indicating a deposition age of Ypresian-Lutetian interval for the unit. The andesitic volcanic rocks in the basal parts of the Darende Formation yielded an Ar-Ar isochron age of 37.35±0.72 Ma, revealing that …

Frand Arbitration Will Destroy Frand, Barbara Lauriat Nov 2024

Frand Arbitration Will Destroy Frand, Barbara Lauriat

Michigan Technology Law Review

Standard essential patent-licensing disputes have been raising the costs of business in the telecommunications industry for over a decade. As technology and interconnectivity extend beyond mobile phones into the Internet of Things (“IoT”), the number of these disputes will only increase. While many academics, policymakers, and stakeholders support arbitration to resolve these disputes, this article warns of the potential long-term consequences of doing so on a large scale.

Standard Setting Organizations usually require the owners of patented technology included in industry standards to commit to licensing on Fair, Reasonable, and Non-discriminatory (“FRAND”) terms to avoid potential abuse of their market …

The Unfairness Of Fair Machine Learning: Leveling Down And Strict Egalitarianism By Default, Brent Mittelstadt, Sandra Wachter, Chris Russell Nov 2024

The Unfairness Of Fair Machine Learning: Leveling Down And Strict Egalitarianism By Default, Brent Mittelstadt, Sandra Wachter, Chris Russell

Michigan Technology Law Review

In recent years, fairness in machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), and algorithmic decision-making systems has emerged as a highly active area of research and development. To date, most measures and methods to mitigate bias and improve fairness in algorithmic systems have been built in isolation from policymaking and civil societal contexts and lack serious engagement with philosophical, political, legal, and economic theories of equality and distributive justice. Many current measures define “fairness” in simple terms to mean narrowing gaps in performance or outcomes between demographic groups while preserving as much of the original system’s accuracy as possible. This oversimplified …

The Implications Of Chatgpt For Legal Services And Society, Andrew Perlman Nov 2024

The Implications Of Chatgpt For Legal Services And Society, Andrew Perlman

Michigan Technology Law Review

On November 30, 2022, OpenAI released a chatbot called ChatGPT.1 To demonstrate the chatbot’s sophistication and its potential implications, both for legal services and society more generally, most of this paper was generated in about an hour through prompts within ChatGPT. Only this abstract, the preface, the outline headers, the footnotes, the epilogue, and the prompts were written by a person. ChatGPT generated the rest of the text with no human editing. To be clear, the responses generated by ChatGPT were imperfect and at times problematic, and the use of an AI tool for law-related services raises a host of …

To Reduce Mental Illness Stigma Among Emergency Medical Service Clinicians, Agencies Must Value Workers’ Psychological Safety And Health, Bryce Hruska, Maria L. Pacella La-Barbara, Marley S. Barduhn

Population Health Research Brief Series

Despite the mental health burdens on emergency medical service (EMS) personnel, most workers do not seek help due to stigma. Psychosocial safety climate (PSC) refers to how much an organization creates an environment that values, supports, and protects workers’ psychological safety and health. This data slice uses data collected in 2023 from EMS workers employed in the Northeastern U.S. Census Region to examine the association between EMS agencies’ PSC levels and mental illness stigma among EMS personnel. The results show that EMS personnel at agencies with high-risk PSC levels report 38% more mental illness stigma in the workplace compared to …

Automated Verification Of Compiler Transformations, Yanzhao Wang Nov 2024

Automated Verification Of Compiler Transformations, Yanzhao Wang

Dissertations and Theses

The ever-growing complexity of software and its target hardware makes it increasingly challenging to develop reliable compilers that preserve the semantics of source code during compilation. Traditional testing methods often lack sufficient test coverage and fail to identify subtle errors and undefined behaviors that can lead to compiler malfunctions. Furthermore, while formal compiler certification ensures semantic preservation through theorem proving, the inherent complexity of this process makes re-certification after each compiler revision substantially labor-intensive. This often significantly hinders the improvement of compilers.

This research aims to bridge the gap between increasing compiler complexity and the limited scalability of formal verification …

Online and social media data are rich datasets that researchers are leveraging to tackle economic and societal challenges. The information that can be gleaned from online media regarding public perceptions makes it an important tool for producers to understand driving topics of interest to the public. This study utilized a prominent online and social media listening and data analytics platform to identify and quantify online and social media mentions related to …

Things Fall(Ing) Apart: Deconstructing Humanism For History Teaching In A Posthumanist Society, Lou Ellis Brassington Nov 2024

Things Fall(Ing) Apart: Deconstructing Humanism For History Teaching In A Posthumanist Society, Lou Ellis Brassington

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

Abstract

This study is a reflective analysis of the discursive construction of the social studies and the teaching of history from medieval scholasticism, through Enlightenment humanism, and into our posthumanist landscape. As an exploration of the foundations of Western thought, with an emphasis on humanism as it has historically affected construction of the social studies, this investigation focuses on theorists, praxis, curriculum development, and teacher identity. My research examined the pedagogical and curriculum choices for the teaching of history along with the intersection of the humanities and humanism from the Enlightenment through the criticalities of the 20th century, and into …

Atypical Rash As A Presentation Of Pityriasis Rosea In A 23-Month-Old., Kedar Tilak, Erica Ray, Majo Joseph

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Pityriasis rosea is a self-limiting skin disorder that can occur in pediatric patients. We report an atypical presentation of a 23-month-old male with a generalized rash similar in appearance to pityriasis rosea. We then review the literature on pityriasis rosea and its application to pediatrics. Our patient had the rash as the only presentation which was also atypical in appearance as opposed to the regular rashes seen with pityriasis rosea which makes this case further interesting. We only treated the case symptomatically and the patient had spontaneous resolution of symptoms.
