Triple-negative inflammatory breast cancer (TN-IBC) is the most aggressive type of breast cancer, yet its defining genomic, molecular, and immunological features remain largely unknown. In this study, we performed the largest and most comprehensive genomic and transcriptomic analyses of prospectively collected TN-IBC patient samples from a phase II clinical trial (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02876107, registered on August 22, 2016) and compared them to similarly analyzed stage III TN-non-IBC patient samples (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02276443, registered on October 21, 2014). We found that TN-IBC tumors have distinctive genomic, molecular, and immunological characteristics, including a lower tumor mutation load than TN-non-IBC, and an association …

Time Domain Spectral Lidar Enabled By Cascaded Raman In A Hydrogen-Filled Transmitter, Richard K. Martin, Trevor L. Courtney, Arielle M. Adams, Daniel E. Leaird, Luke Ausley, Christian K. Keyser

Faculty Publications

We introduce what we believe to be novel spectral light detection and ranging (LiDAR) architectures that enable ultra-compact systems by a transition from spectral signal processing in space (gratings) to processing in time. The architectures leverage temporal dispersion and the unique spectro-temporal waveforms produced from the cascaded Raman scattering generated in the (H2) filled hollow core fiber. The characterized Raman source yields as many as six Raman orders from 1.06-1.70 μm; their unique spectro-temporal waveforms are measured. System performance simulations based on measured Raman waveforms show that high accuracy measurement of range and reflectivity are possible with proper …

In this paper, we use wave-optics simulations to explore the limitations of beam-control compensation. We evaluate performance in terms of the normalized power in a diffraction-limited bucket for the cases of no beam-control compensation, perfect phase compensation, and perfect full-field compensation. From these results, we are able to arrive at the following conclusions: (1) without any form of beam-control compensation, performance begins to degrade when D/r0 > 1; (2) with perfect phase compensation, performance begins to degrade when D/r0 > 1 and (λ/r0)/θ0 > 1; and (3) with perfect full-field compensation, performance begins to degrade when D/r0 …

Immersion And Understanding: Towards A Personal Theory Of Literature And Culture, Jonathan Len Vowell Nov 2024

Immersion And Understanding: Towards A Personal Theory Of Literature And Culture, Jonathan Len Vowell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

A certain critical consensus has been growing through the late 20th and early 21st centuries that ‘critique’—the general model of and approach for academic analysis for literary and cultural studies in Western universities and academics—has ‘run out of steam’. Its postures of suspicion and negation, its various methods of interrogation and unmasking, and its general orientation towards deconstruction and subversion (as opposed to construction and position), has hit a wall on its returns politically, intellectually, and ethically. Consequently, a crisis in the humanities has emerged (or reemerged) wherein the need has returned to justify what it is exactly that the …

The Daily Routine By Dr. David Spencer. A Guide And Translation In Mandarin For Chinese Brass Players, Yiming Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This paper explores the importance of a structured daily routine for modern Chinese music students, emphasizing foundational skills as key to musical development. Reflecting on personal experience, this study demonstrates how practicing without clear organization can hinder progress, as fundamental weaknesses often remain unaddressed. Citing Dr. David Spencer's insights, the paper underscores that structured, intentional practice is vital for solidifying foundational skills and advancing musicianship. While top musicians share strong fundamentals across instruments, many students, particularly in countries like China, receive insufficient foundational training, especially in brass instrument practice. The SAFARE framework—Sound, Articulation, Flexibility, Agility, Range, and Endurance—is proposed as …

I also inquired about the strategies students can use to succeed and what they found most helpful during their time at the R1 university. The study, grounded in Critical Race Theory, examined how seven Black and Hispanic undergraduate students navigated systemic barriers, utilized support services, and persisted …

Bigeminy With Prolonged Qt Interval As An Ominous Sign For Impending Torsades De Pointes: A Case Report, Thuc K. Vu, Jake Valentine Nov 2024

Bigeminy With Prolonged Qt Interval As An Ominous Sign For Impending Torsades De Pointes: A Case Report, Thuc K. Vu, Jake Valentine

Student Publications

Introduction: Ventricular ectopic beats and corrected QT interval (QTc) prolongation are both relatively common entities that are typically benign. It is difficult to predict subsequent dysrhythmias from either electrocardiogram (ECG) feature. The combination of both features may better predict the risk of torsades de pointes. We highlight a case of torsades preceded by a bizarre bigeminal rhythm with QTc prolongation likely caused by memantine use and hypokalemia.

Case Report: An 84-year-old female presented to the emergency department with a fall. A syncope workup revealed an ECG demonstrating bigeminy with a prolonged QTc interval. Several minutes after obtaining the ECG, the …

All Decisions

In this non-payment case, the tenant moved for summary judgment based on an overcharge claim, asserting that a two-attorney stipulation in a prior case violated the Rent Stabilization Code by setting the rent above what was allowable. The landlord argued that the stipulation, made post-HSTPA, was valid under 9 NYCRR 2520.13, which permits tenants to waive certain rights. The court rejected this argument, ruling that such stipulations, which violated the Rent Stabilization Code, were void as against public policy. Consequently, the landlord was found liable for the overcharge, although the exact overcharge amount was left unresolved pending further proceedings.

Daniels, Adrian Elmi-Terander, Erik Edström

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVE: Posterior fossa decompression for Chiari malformation type I (Chiari 1) is effective and associated with a low risk of complication. However, up to 20% of patients may experience continued deficits or recurring symptoms after surgical intervention. For pediatric patients, there are no established tools to predict outcomes, and the risk factors for unfavorable postoperative outcomes are poorly understood. Hence, our aim was to investigate baseline data and early postoperative predictors of poor outcomes as determined by the Chicago Chiari outcome scale (CCOS).

METHODS: All pediatric patients (< 18 years) receiving a posterior fossa decompression for Chiari 1 between the years of 2005 and 2020 at the study center were eligible for inclusion. Patients with congenital anomalies were excluded.

RESULTS: Seventy-one pediatric patients with a median age of 9 years were …

Adoption of diverse weed management practices is viewed as essential for slowing the spread of herbicide-resistant (HR) weeds. Yet, adoption of diverse tactics has remained low, while there has been explosive growth of resistant weeds. This study analyzes U.S.-farm-level data to identify factors affecting adoption of diverse weed management practices. This study uses directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) to consider how practice adoption is influenced by different causal pathways between farmer and farm characteristics and farmer awareness of and concern over HR weeds. This study then uses multiple regression analysis to estimate the direct and indirect pathways that influence practice adoption. …

Monsters, Multiplicities, And Liminal Experiences In Doctoral Education: Fabulation As Research Methodology, Anna V. Gonzalez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to experiment with qualitative research methodologies while exploring the complexities of doctoral education, research practices, philosophies of inquiry, and other topics intersecting with(in) educational scholarship. My vision for this work was fueled by postmodernist critiques of humanist education, frustrations with the methodological status quo pervasive in educational research, and deep concerns about the unsustainability of performance-focused teaching and learning.

The logic I follow in this project is simple: if we—researchers and academics—are to contribute solutions for challenges and ongoing crises in our world, then we must start thinking relationally and in ways more complex …

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a neurocutaneous disorder characterized by the multisystem development of benign tumors. Patients with TSC are also at an increased risk of developing intracranial aneurysms early in life. While aneurysms have historically been treated with open surgical clipping, endovascular approaches are increasingly being used in both pediatric and adult populations.

OBSERVATIONS: In this case series, the authors report the endovascular treatment of three young patients with TSC and fusiform intracranial aneurysms using the Pipeline embolization device (PED) for flow diversion of the affected artery. In all cases, complete aneurysm occlusion was observed, with good parent …

Performance And Trihalomethane Formation Potential Of Alternative Electron Donors For Wastewater Denitrification, Bruno Fulco Mancini Nov 2024

Performance And Trihalomethane Formation Potential Of Alternative Electron Donors For Wastewater Denitrification, Bruno Fulco Mancini

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogen removal from wastewater is critical to preserve ecosystems, as well as human health and welfare. Excess nutrients in receiving waters can cause many problems to the environment, such as algal blooms, drinking water contamination, and economic losses. Nitrogen removal in wastewater occurs mainly through the oxidation and reduction processes of nitrification and denitrification, which occur in engineered systems at wastewater treatment plants or water reclamation facilities.

The site for this research was the South Cross Bayou (SCB) Water Reclamation Facility, located in Pinellas County, FL, USA. At SCB, nitrogen is removed through a Modified Ludzak-Ettinger (MLE) process with the …

Seasonal And Interannual Abundance, Distribution, And Carbon Production Estimates In The Northeastern Gulf Of Mexico Using The Sipper Camera Imaging System, Carlyn Scott

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Larvaceans are filter-feeding gelatinous zooplankton whose contributions to marine biogeochemical processes are poorly constrained. By frequently shedding their particle-rich houses and producing dense fecal pellets, larvaceans contribute large amounts of particulate organic matter to deeper waters and to the sea floor. Despite their importance, little is known about larvacean abundance, distribution, and carbon production in the highly productive northeastern Gulf of Mexico (NEGOM). To address this gap in knowledge, we collected images of larvaceans at discrete depths in the upper 300 m of the water column between August 2010 –2014 using the Shadowed Image Particle Profiling and Evaluation Recorder (SIPPER) …

Camkk2: Bridging The Gap Between Ca2+ Signaling And Energy-Sensing, Luke M Mcaloon, Abbey G Muller, Kevin Nay, Eudora L Lu, Benoit Smeuninx, Anthony R Means, Mark A Febbraio, John W Scott

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Calcium (Ca2+) ions are ubiquitous and indispensable signaling messengers that regulate virtually every cell function. The unique ability of Ca2+ to regulate so many different processes yet cause stimulus specific changes in cell function requires sensing and decoding of Ca2+ signals. Ca2+-sensing proteins, such as calmodulin, decode Ca2+ signals by binding and modifying the function of a diverse range of effector proteins. These effectors include the Ca2+-calmodulin dependent protein kinase kinase-2 (CaMKK2) enzyme, which is the core component of a signaling cascade that plays a key role in important physiological and pathophysiological processes, including brain function and cancer. In addition …

Tumor-Associated Antigen Prediction Using A Single-Sample Gene Expression State Inference Algorithm, Xinpei Yi, Hongwei Zhao, Shunjie Hu, Liangqing Dong, Yongchao Dou, Jing Li, Qiang Gao, Bing Zhang

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

We developed a Bayesian-based algorithm to infer gene expression states in individual samples and incorporated it into a workflow to identify tumor-associated antigens (TAAs) across 33 cancer types using RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) data from the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Our analysis identified 212 candidate TAAs, with 78 validated in independent RNA-seq datasets spanning seven cancer types. Eighteen of these TAAs were further corroborated by proteomics data, including 10 linked to liver cancer. We predicted that 38 peptides derived from these 10 TAAs would bind strongly to HLA-A02, the most common HLA allele. Experimental validation confirmed …
