Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a culmination of over 200 known viruses. Most of these strains of viruses do not have any negative effect on humans. There are a handful of known strains that are high-risk and if infected, could lead to common warts, genital warts, or even cancer. Human Papilloma Virus effects both men and women but research has a focus on women. In 2019, HPV caused an estimated 620,000 cancer cases in women and 70,000 cancer cases in men (WHO, 2024). There are many ways to protect oneself from infection, for example, limiting sexual partners, using protection such …

Knowledge graphs (KGs) possess a vital role in enhancing the semantic comprehension of extensive datasets across many fields. It facilitate activities like recommendation systems, semantic searching, and intelligent data mining. However, lacking information can sometimes limit the usefulness of knowledge graphs (KGs), as the lack of relationships between entities could severely limit their practical application. Most existing approaches for KG completion primarily concentrate on embedding-based methods or just use relational paths, neglecting the valuable structural information offered by node density. This research presents an approach that effectively combines relational paths and the density features of tail nodes to enhance the …

Prior Probability Biases Perceptual Choices By Modulating The Accumulation Rate, Rather Than The Baseline, Of Decision Evidence, Jessica A. Diaz, M. Andrea Pisauro, Ioannis Delis, Marios G. Philiastides Nov 2024

Prior Probability Biases Perceptual Choices By Modulating The Accumulation Rate, Rather Than The Baseline, Of Decision Evidence, Jessica A. Diaz, M. Andrea Pisauro, Ioannis Delis, Marios G. Philiastides

School of Psychology

The prior probability of an upcoming stimulus has been shown to influence the formation of perceptual decisions. Computationally, these effects have typically been attributed to changes in the starting point (i.e., baseline) of evidence accumulation in sequential sampling models. More recently, it has also been proposed that prior probability might additionally lead to changes in the rate of evidence accumulation. Here, we introduce a neurally-informed behavioural modelling approach to understand whether prior probability influences the starting point, the rate of evidence accumulation or both. To this end, we employ a well-established visual object categorisation task for which two neural components …

Partisan Prejudice: The Role Of Beliefs About The Unchanging Nature Of Ideology And Partisans, Crystal L. Hoyt, Jeni L. Burnette, Meghan Moore

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

Although there is a tendency to think all forms of essentialism—the belief that characteristics are inherent and unchangeable—are similar, some theories suggest different foundations and outcomes. We investigated if belief systems about the stability of political ideology (trait essentialism) and the fundamental nature of partisans (social essentialism) predict prejudice in opposite ways and if they do so via differential relations with blame. Across six studies (N = 2,231), we found that the more people believe the trait of political ideology is fixed (trait essentialism), the more they think that Republicans and Democrats are inherently different (social essentialism). Crucially, despite …

An Investigation Of Frequency-Domain Pruning Algorithms For Accelerating Human Activity Recognition Tasks Based On Sensor Data, Jian Su, Haijian Shao, Xing Deng, Yingtao Jiang

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

The rapidly advancing Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have brought about a paradigm shift in various computer vision tasks, while also garnering increasing interest and application in sensor-based Human Activity Recognition (HAR) efforts. However, the significant computational demands and memory requirements hinder the practical deployment of deep networks in resource-constrained systems. This paper introduces a novel network pruning method based on the energy spectral density of data in the frequency domain, which reduces the model’s depth and accelerates activity inference. Unlike traditional pruning methods that focus on the spatial domain and the importance of filters, this method converts sensor data, such …

Regulating Chatbot Output Via Inter-Informational Competition, Jiawei Zhang Nov 2024

Regulating Chatbot Output Via Inter-Informational Competition, Jiawei Zhang

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

The advent of ChatGPT has sparked over a year of regulatory frenzy. Policymakers across jurisdictions have embarked on an AI regulatory “arms race,” and worldwide researchers have begun devising a potpourri of regulatory schemes to handle the content risks posed by generative AI products as represented by ChatGPT. However, few existing studies have rigorously questioned the assumption that, if left unregulated, AI chatbot’s output would inflict tangible, severe real harm on human affairs. Most researchers have overlooked the critical possibility that the information market itself can effectively mitigate these risks and, as a result, they tend to use regulatory tools …

Between Copyright And Computer Science: The Law And Ethics Of Generative Ai, Devin R. Desai, Mark Riedl Nov 2024

Between Copyright And Computer Science: The Law And Ethics Of Generative Ai, Devin R. Desai, Mark Riedl

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

Copyright and computer science continue to intersect and clash, but they can coexist. The advent of new technologies such as digitization of visual and aural creations, sharing technologies, search engines, social media offerings, and more, challenge copyright-based industries and reopen questions about the reach of copyright law. Breakthroughs in artificial intelligence research, especially Large Language Models that leverage copyrighted material as part of training, are the latest examples of the ongoing tension between copyright and computer science. The exuberance, rush-to-market, and edge problem cases created by a few misguided companies now raises challenges to core legal doctrines and may shift …

Fair Use, Licensing, And Authors' Rights In The Age Of Generative Ai, Celeste Shen Nov 2024

Fair Use, Licensing, And Authors' Rights In The Age Of Generative Ai, Celeste Shen

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

The rise of generative AI technologies has introduced unprecedented challenges to copyright law, particularly around the fair use of copyrighted works in AI training processes. Generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, are trained on vast datasets that often include copyrighted material, typically without the consent of authors or compensation for use. This widespread, unauthorized use has led to legal disputes, with plaintiffs asserting that using protected texts in training AI models constitutes copyright infringement. This Note examines the application of the fair use doctrine to generative AI, analyzing each of the four statutory factors to demonstrate that generative AI’s commercial …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Convergent data suggest that advanced prostate cancer and coronary heart disease (CHD) share biological vulnerabilities that may be linked to adiposity. Here we explore whether leptin, as a marker and mediator of adiposity, could link prostate cancer to CHD.

Methods: Patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) enrolled in a phase II trial (NCT02703623) studying androgen deprivation therapy, abiraterone, prednisone, and apalutamide were eligible if they had plasma and a chest CT scan available. Coronary artery calcium (CAC) scores and adipokine levels were measured upon enrollment.

Results: Of 164 patients, 87% were white. The mean age was …

Nonequilibrium Plasma Synthesis And Processing Of Iii-Nitride Materials, Dillon Patrick Moher Nov 2024

Nonequilibrium Plasma Synthesis And Processing Of Iii-Nitride Materials, Dillon Patrick Moher

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Nitrogen is abundant on Earth as its diatomic form, and human activity has generated a significant demand for nitrogen-containing compounds. However, its triple bond energy of 941 kJ/mol makes it a poor reactive species in the ground state. Nitrogen-containing nonequilibrium plasmas are made up of background gas, electrons, ions, and a multitude of excited states of nitrogen or even atomic nitrogen. Many of these species have rather high reactivity. As such, the plasma medium is of great potential for driving chemical reactions that involve nitrogen as a reactant, i.e., nitrogen fixation into compounds like ammonia, high-energy-density polynitrogen compounds, and metal-nitride …
