Unravelling The Erythropoietin Heterodimeric Complex: In Silico Analysis Of Complex Assembly And Binding Interface, Atiya Habib, Urooj Qureshi, Mohammad Nur-E-Alam, Aftab Ahmed, Zaheer Ul-Haq

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Erythropoietin (Epo), a glycosylated protein categorized as a member of the cytokine family, is responsible for the modulation of erythrogenesis. Besides this, the nonhaematopoietic effects of Epo are associated with tissue-protective activity via an antiapoptotic pathway. This function of Epo is linked with its heterodimeric form, i.e. EpoR/βcR belonging to the cytokine family as well. Both receptors are dissected into three domains: extracellular (also known as ligand-binding domain), transmembrane and cytoplasmic domain. The transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains are assumed to play a paramount role in dimerization and tissue protection. However, the tertiary structure of cytoplasmic domains of both …

An Arkansas Boy’S Vietnam War, Isaac D. Wolter Nov 2024

An Arkansas Boy’S Vietnam War, Isaac D. Wolter

Theses and Dissertations

The Vietnam War was an inescapable part of life for Americans in the 1960s. This thesis serves to tell the story of one Arkansas boy’s life who serves as a microcosm of the American boys sent overseas to fight in a war that they largely did not understand. The information within the project is drawn from primary source materials collected by the Jacksonville Museum of Military History and the possessions of John Wayne Acosta sent home from Vietnam. Secondary sources serve to complement the class and personal struggles John Wayne had to deal with in volunteering and then re-upping to …

Supporting The Cultural Identity Development Of Indigenous Youth: Findings From An Indigenous Educators' Community-Of-Practice, Angela Lunda, Amber Frommherz, William Gamaas Bolton, Barbara Dude, Naomi Leask, Roberta Littlefield, Jennifer Mccarty, Shawna Puustinen, Natasia Vaska Nov 2024

Supporting The Cultural Identity Development Of Indigenous Youth: Findings From An Indigenous Educators' Community-Of-Practice, Angela Lunda, Amber Frommherz, William Gamaas Bolton, Barbara Dude, Naomi Leask, Roberta Littlefield, Jennifer Mccarty, Shawna Puustinen, Natasia Vaska

Faculty and Staff

Research reveals a positive impact on educational achievement for Indigenous students when their teachers are also Indigenous. The educational value of shared identity between students and teachers manifests in the form of increased student attendance rates, grades, and graduation rates. Fewer than 5% of public-school teachers in Alaska are Indigenous, while nearly 20% of students are Indigenous. Thus, it is unlikely that most Indigenous students in Alaska will experience a shared cultural identity with their teachers—nor would it be desirable, in this age of global mobility, for society to strive for teachers and students to share cultural identity in all …

The Role Of Parental Engagement In Closing The Achievement Gap, Samuel Maurice Coleman Nov 2024

The Role Of Parental Engagement In Closing The Achievement Gap, Samuel Maurice Coleman

Student Theses and Dissertations

Students benefit greatly form strong partnerships among parents, schools, and communities (Epstein, 2008). Epstein (1995, 2008) categorized parental involvement into six types: parenting, communicating, volunteering, learning at home, decision making, and collaborating with the community. However, the schools have not established the opportunities for all the categorizes for parents to be involved. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study is to better understand the source of the barriers to parental involvement through the lived experiences of parents, teachers, and administrators in two high schools in the southern region of the United States. The research questions that guided the study addressed …

Dog Sniffing Biomechanic Responses In An Odor Detection Test Of Odorants With Differing Physical Properties, Lydia Burnett, Nicholas Hebdon, Pete A. Stevens, Monica Moljo, Lindsay D. Waldrop, Lauryn Degreeff

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Dogs are utilized in forensic science for their extensive scent detection capabilities. They are often considered the “gold standard” in field detection for targets such as illicit drugs and explosives. Despite their prevalence in the field, relatively little is known about how dogs interact with and transport volatile organic compounds through their olfactory system. In this study, two groups of dogs were utilized – Sport detection dogs (n=19) that participate in the National Association of Canine Scent Work and have achieved advanced standing through training and successful search competitions and law enforcement explosive detection dogs (n=8) which were included for …

Navigating Thanksgiving When You Don’T Feel Thankful, Leah Jolly Nov 2024

Navigating Thanksgiving When You Don’T Feel Thankful, Leah Jolly

CTS Student Publications and Creative Works

As the holiday season approaches, there’s a temptation (at least in the North American church and context) to fake your emotions and act thankful, even when your life circumstances have you feeling the exact opposite. In 2022, after a long year of financial loss, medical crisis, changes in employment, and loss of essentially our entire support system, I arrived at Thanksgiving feeling almost anything but thankful. However, in that season of feeling less than thankful, God still taught me how to pursue gratitude, even when I didn’t feel thankful. So how do we, as followers of Christ, navigate Thanksgiving when …

Vision-Language Integration For Enhanced Locomotion Mode Prediction, Ehsan Ahmadi Nov 2024

Vision-Language Integration For Enhanced Locomotion Mode Prediction, Ehsan Ahmadi

LSU Master's Theses

Wearable exoskeletons offer significant potential in enhancing human mobility in industrial environments. However, their adaptability to dynamic, task-intensive settings presents challenges, especially in accurately predicting locomotion modes such as ladder climbing, stair navigation, low-space movement, and obstacle navigation. This research proposes a multimodal framework that integrates visual data and speech commands to improve locomotion mode prediction in unpredictable environments. Multimodal data was collected using smart glasses, capturing both the user’s perspective (field-of-view, FOV) and voice during locomotion tasks. State-of-the-art models—CLIP, ImageBind, and GPT-4o—process these visual and linguistic inputs to predict locomotion activities. The models were evaluated in zero-shot and fine-tuned …

Curriculum Curation: Centering Mirrors And Windows In An Inclusive Bookshelf Project, Kelly P. Vaughan

Education Department Faculty Articles

From increasing calls for multicultural and inclusive books to media stories about books being banned in elementary schools,  curriculum debates have become increasingly contentious. These debates illuminate key questions in curriculum studies: What is the knowledge of most worth? And who decides? In this article, I utilize a curriculum studies in education framework to engage and extend the literature supporting multicultural and inclusive children’s literature and critical literacy while emphasizing the role of teachers-as-curators. After analyzing the results of a year-long project in which preservice teachers (PSTs) curated collections of multicultural books representing a mirrors and windows approach to text …

The American Way Of Studying War: What Is It Good For?, Michael P. Ferguson Nov 2024

The American Way Of Studying War: What Is It Good For?, Michael P. Ferguson

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

Academic military historians, government institutions, and defense practitioners have unique purposes for advancing the study of war that influence the way they consume and produce history. Although there is substantial scholarship covering how the discipline of military history has changed since the late nineteenth century, the literature surrounding why it changes and how it is used is less plentiful. Using primary and secondary sources to contextualize debates between historians, this study traces major developments in military historiography, considers the US Army’s relationship with its history, and explores potential connections between a history’s purpose and its use for military professionals.

The Philippines’ Security In The Face Of China's Rising Threats, Shang-Su Wu Nov 2024

The Philippines’ Security In The Face Of China's Rising Threats, Shang-Su Wu

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

This article contends that the United States has insufficiently acknowledged the extent of the Philippines’ vulnerability and its importance in preserving the balance of power. While many scholars have focused on Taiwan’s strategic importance, few have considered the state of the Philippines’ military capabilities in maintaining the region’s status quo. This article traces the modern history of the Philippines’ military and defense capabilities and examines the current state of the country’s defenses and the likely outcomes of different military scenarios. It concludes by providing practical recommendations on how the United States can help the Philippines within the constraints of its …

Korea, Germany, And The Arsenal Of Democracy, Michael Fitzpatrick Nov 2024

Korea, Germany, And The Arsenal Of Democracy, Michael Fitzpatrick

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

In the 1970s, the United States and West Germany developed a vital transatlantic partnership focused on new military doctrines and technology that met the challenges of the late Cold War. Due to domestic politics and strategic concerns, the United States never recreated this type of relationship with countries in the Indo-Pacific region—specifically with South Korea. Using a unique synthesis of American, German, and Korean sources, this article argues that another partnership is required in Asia today. Rather than fall back on European partners, Washington should collaborate with Seoul to develop a new generation of doctrine and technology.

Applying Visual Identity At The Main Entrances To Cities (Case Study: Entrance To Beni Suef City), Nesma Mohamed Abd El- Maksoud

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Egypt’s vision and many initiatives, such as the “Controlling Egyptian Urbanism and Supporting Visual Identity” initiative, seek to create a visual identity for Egypt’s governorates, to deepen the concept of national belonging, and to issue a guideline for visual identity at the level of each governorate. The visual identity of cities is produced from a set of urban, social, cultural, historical, and environmental variables. Economically, the research studies how to link the urban and visual identity of cities and express it through the entrances to cities and the urban spaces surrounding them to improve and develop the city’s local and …

Development Of Long-Term Studies Evaluating The Potential Of Chondrostereum Purpureum As A Mycobiocontrol On Invasive Buckthorn, Abraham F. Stone

Michigan Tech Undergraduate Scholarship

Chondrostereum purpureum is a circumboreal polypore with high potential as a native fungal biocontrol for weedy, deciduous tree species in the Northern Hemisphere. This thesis describes the development of three multi-year studies designed to evaluate the effectiveness of C. purpureum as a management tool for invasive buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica and Frangula alnus) in Upper Michigan, in a manner that tests a broader range of application methods beyond girdling or cut-stump treatments. Our experiments focused on a) developing a viable liquid inoculum to spray on buckthorn whips and b) creating a symptomatic assessment scale to quantify disease progression of C. purpureum …

Legal Disputes Over Frozen Embryos After Dobbs: A Retrospective Study Of Claims, Contracts, And Liability In Cases Of Divorce Or Separation, Gerard Letterie, Dov Fox

Pace Law Review

This study reviewed legal claims and clinic liability over disputed frozen embryos in cases of divorce or separation. Our data shows that one-third of cases had no prior arrangement regarding disposition about what to do in the event of separation or divorce. When agreements were in place they were rarely clear enough to determine the court’s resolution in these cases. In a post-Dobbs era, absence of adequate guidance could have significant implications regarding liability for all parties.
