The Neurohospitalist Core Competencies comprise a set of competency-based learning objectives that encapsulate the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of neurohospitalitists who specialize in the care of hospitalized patients with neurologic conditions. These competencies serve to characterize the rapidly expanding field of neurohospitalist medicine. The 27 chapters are divided into 3 sections entitled: neurological conditions, clinical interventions and interpretation of ancillary studies, and neurohospitalist role in the healthcare system. Each individual learning objective in the chapters describes a specific concept with an action verb to illustrate the behavior that the neurohospitalist exhibits. The individual neurohospitalist may not exhibit mastery in each …

Unified Worldline Treatment Of Yukawa And Axial Couplings, James Edwards Nov 2024

Unified Worldline Treatment Of Yukawa And Axial Couplings, James Edwards

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We provide a worldline representation of the one-loop effective action for a Dirac particle coupled to external scalar, pseudoscalar, vector and axialvector fields. Extending previous work by two of the authors on the pure vector-axialvector case to all four couplings, it allows one to treat the real and the imaginary parts of the effective action in a unified manner, at the price of having a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Unlike existing worldline representations, our new worldline action contains terms with an odd number of Grassmann fields, leading to ordering problems that in the worldline formalism are usually encountered only in curved space. …

Neuro-Symbolic Ai Techniques To Advance Model Verification, Scalability And Equity With Applications To Math Learning, Anup Shakya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Neuro-symbolic models leverage the combined strengths of both symbolic AI and Deep Neural networks (DNNs), namely the interpretability of symbolic AI and the representation power of DNNs. These models are gaining significant attention, particularly in high-stakes domains where domain knowledge and interpretability play a key role. In this dissertation, we propose to develop neuro-symbolic AI based techniques to improve the scalability, verifiability, and equitability of these models. Specifically, we will focus on a high-stakes domain where the aforementioned properties are crucial, namely, AI-enabled education. In particular, Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) can make high-quality education available for a large and diverse …

Network Differentiation And Identification Of Singletons In Gaussian Networks Under The Bayesian Framework, James Olusegun Adefisoye Nov 2024

Network Differentiation And Identification Of Singletons In Gaussian Networks Under The Bayesian Framework, James Olusegun Adefisoye

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation explores Bayesian approaches for network analysis in the context of epigenetic modifications, specifically focusing on Deoxyribonucleic acid methylation (DNA-m) at cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) sites. DNA-m is a key epigenetic modification associated with diseases and infections. Recent research suggests that analyzing joint activities across multiple CpG sites could provide more powerful insights, which can be achieved using network-based approaches, such as Gaussian networks. The first project introduces a Bayesian variable selection method for detecting singletons and reconstructing networks that incorporate singleton status. Singletons, or isolated nodes, can lead to false connections and biased interpretations. The proposed method effectively detects singletons, …

Introduction: Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, two of the most common forms of arthritis worldwide, are chronic diseases affecting the joints. The Rio Grande Valley is characterized by an abundance of health disparities, with previous studies showing increased rates of multiple diseases and disorders in this region. This study aimed to determine both the prevalence and the risk-adjusted average cost of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in the Rio Grande Valley and to compare them with the national average. We hypothesize that the prevalence and risk-adjusted average cost of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in the Rio Grande Valley will be greater than …

New Insights Into Combined Surfzone, Embayment, And Estuarine Bathing Hazards, Christopher Stokes, Timothy Poate, Gerd Masselink, Tim Scott, Steve Instance Nov 2024

New Insights Into Combined Surfzone, Embayment, And Estuarine Bathing Hazards, Christopher Stokes, Timothy Poate, Gerd Masselink, Tim Scott, Steve Instance

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Rip currents are the single largest cause of beach safety incidents globally, but where an estuary mouth intersects a beach, additional flows are created that can exceed the speed of a typical rip current, significantly increasing the hazard level for bathers. However, there is a paucity of observations of surfzone currents at estuary mouth beaches, and our understanding and ability to predict how the bathing hazard varies under different wave and tide conditions are therefore limited. Using field observations and process-based XBeach modelling at an embayed, estuary mouth beach, we demonstrate how surfzone currents can be driven by combinations of …

Habit Coach: Customising Rag-Based Chatbots To Support Behavior Change, Arian Fooroogh Mand Arabi, Cansu Koyuturk, Michael O'Mahony, Raffaella Calati, Dimitri Ognibene

Conference papers

This paper presents the iterative development of Habit Coach, a GPT-based chatbot designed to support users in habit change through personalized interaction. Employing a user-centered design approach, we developed the chatbot using a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) system, which enables behavior personalization without retraining the underlying language model (GPT-4). The system leverages document retrieval and specialized prompts to tailor interactions, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and narrative therapy techniques. A key challenge in the development process was the difficulty of translating declarative knowledge into effective interaction behaviors. In the initial phase, the chatbot was provided with declarative knowledge about CBT …

The Average Number Of Goldbach Representations And Zero-Free Regions Of The Riemann Zeta Function, Keith Billington, Maddie Cheng, Jordan Schettler, Ade Irma Suriajaya

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

In this paper, we prove an unconditional form of Fujii's formula for the average number of Goldbach representations and show that the error in this formula is determined by a general zero-free region of the Riemann zeta function, and vice versa. In particular, we describe the error in the unconditional formula in terms of the remainder in the Prime Number Theorem which connects the error to zero-free regions of the Riemann zeta function.

Evaluating The Multi-Valued Bartlett Processor, Daniel Robert Frister Nov 2024

Evaluating The Multi-Valued Bartlett Processor, Daniel Robert Frister

Dissertations and Theses

A variety of approaches exist to track targets in the ocean using acoustic sensors, and the complex mix of source characteristics, environmental effects, and sensor array limitations can make the selection of an appropriate algorithm challenging. This thesis models in simulation a recently proposed signal processing method that is intended for use with a large rectangular sensor array to track the bearings of multiple sources. The method, referred to as the Multi-Valued Bartlett (MVB) processor, is an eigenvector beamformer that leverages the capabilities of large arrays to locate in bearing multiple sources simultaneously. The analysis of this thesis details the …

Scale-Dependent Effects Of Urban Canopy Cover, Canopy Volume, And Impervious Surfaces On Near-Surface Air Temperature In A Mid-Sized City, Carson Ralls, Anne Y. Polyakov, Vivek Shandas

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Cities are significantly warmer than their surrounding rural environments. Known as the ‘urban heat island effect’, it can affect the health of urban residents and lead to increased energy use, public health impacts, and damage to infrastructure. Although this effect is extensively researched, less is known about how landscape characteristics within cities affect local temperature variation. This study examined how tree canopy cover, canopy volume, and impervious surface cover affect daytime near-surface air temperature, and how these effects vary between different scales of analysis (10, 30, 60, 90 m radii), ranging from approximate street corridor to city block size. Temperature …

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Adoption of diverse weed management practices is viewed as essential for slowing the spread of herbicide-resistant (HR) weeds. Yet, adoption of diverse tactics has remained low, while there has been explosive growth of resistant weeds. This study analyzes U.S.-farm-level data to identify factors affecting adoption of diverse weed management practices. This study uses directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) to consider how practice adoption is influenced by different causal pathways between farmer and farm characteristics and farmer awareness of and concern over HR weeds. This study then uses multiple regression analysis to estimate the direct and indirect pathways that influence practice adoption. …

Economic Foundations Of Contraceptive Transitions: Theories And A Review Of The Evidence, Mahesh Karra, Joshua Wilde Nov 2024

Economic Foundations Of Contraceptive Transitions: Theories And A Review Of The Evidence, Mahesh Karra, Joshua Wilde

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

We review the foundations of the economic development–contraception nexus, focusing on the pathways through which economic factors drive contraceptive adoption and change. We investigate the channels through which the relationship between economic development and contraceptive dynamics is mediated. Using global data, we document the correlations between economic development and contraception transitions over time and across geographies. We briefly examine the evidence of the role of fertility, both desired and realized, as a central pathway through which the relationship has been historically theorized and empirically verified. We also discuss a range of mechanisms through which economic development drives contraceptive use independently …

Understanding Mechanisms For Coastal Marsh Sustainability In A Changing Climate, Ashley R. Booth Nov 2024

Understanding Mechanisms For Coastal Marsh Sustainability In A Changing Climate, Ashley R. Booth

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the Chenier Plain of Louisiana and Texas, coastal marshes are subject to high rates of relative sea level rise (RSLR), restricted sedimentation, and declining elevation attributed to subsidence and decades of intensive management. These marshes were created via mineral sedimentation but now largely accrete via organic matter accumulation. This organic matter accumulation (OMA) – or the balance between plant productivity and decomposition – is essential for maintaining elevation and thus long-term sustainability. However, management for elevation is complicated by a poor understanding of how abiotic factors like flooding and salinity impact processes driving OMA and elevation. To better understand …

Metabolite Signatures Of Chronological Age, Aging, Survival, And Longevity, Paola Sebastiani, Mary F Feitosa, Mary K Wojczynski, Gary J Patti, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Metabolites that mark aging are not fully known. We analyze 408 plasma metabolites in Long Life Family Study participants to characterize markers of age, aging, extreme longevity, and mortality. We identify 308 metabolites associated with age, 258 metabolites that change over time, 230 metabolites associated with extreme longevity, and 152 metabolites associated with mortality risk. We replicate many associations in independent studies. By summarizing the results into 19 signatures, we differentiate between metabolites that may mark aging-associated compensatory mechanisms from metabolites that mark cumulative damage of aging and from metabolites that characterize extreme longevity. We generate and validate a metabolomic …

Spatial, Transcriptomic, And Epigenomic Analyses Link Dorsal Horn Neurons To Chronic Pain Genetic Predisposition, Cynthia M Arokiaraj, Alexander Chamessian, Et Al. Nov 2024

Spatial, Transcriptomic, And Epigenomic Analyses Link Dorsal Horn Neurons To Chronic Pain Genetic Predisposition, Cynthia M Arokiaraj, Alexander Chamessian, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Key mechanisms underlying chronic pain occur within the dorsal horn. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified genetic variants predisposed to chronic pain. However, most of these variants lie within regulatory non-coding regions that have not been linked to spinal cord biology. Here, we take a multi-species approach to determine whether chronic pain variants impact the regulatory genomics of dorsal horn neurons. First, we generate a large rhesus macaque single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) atlas and integrate it with available human and mouse datasets to produce a single unified, species-conserved atlas of neuron subtypes. Cellular-resolution spatial transcriptomics in mouse shows the precise …

Rsk1 Dependency In Flt3-Itd Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Tim Kong, Angelo B A Laranjeira, Christopher T Letson, Layow Yu, Fan He, Aarthi Jayanthan, Gerrit Los, Sandra E Dunn, Grant A Challen, Stephen T Oh

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Internal tandem duplications (ITD) in fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) represent the most common genetic alteration in de novo acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Here, we identify ribosomal protein s6 kinase a1 (RSK1) as a core dependency in FLT3-ITD AML and unveil the existence of crucial bi-directional regulation. RSK1 perturbation resulted in marked apoptosis and abrogated phosphorylation of FLT3 and associated downstream signaling cascades in FLT3-ITD AML cell lines. Using cycloheximide, MG-132, and ubiquitination assays, we further demonstrate mechanistically that RSK1 regulates FLT3-ITD activity, and protein stability through deubiqutinase USP1, which we identify as a second dependency. Importantly, multivariate analysis revealed …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Relapsed/refractory (R/R) indolent non-Hodgkin lymphoma (iNHL) is generally considered incurable with current treatment options. Previous phase 1b/2 results showed combining magrolimab (anti-cluster-of-differentiation [CD] 47 antibody) with the anti-CD20 antibody rituximab (M+R) has antitumor activity against R/R iNHL. We report 3-year follow-up data from this phase 1b/2 study assessing long-term safety and efficacy of M+R in R/R iNHL. After magrolimab priming, 4 patient groups in phase 1b M+R received 10 to 45-mg/kg magrolimab doses with 375 mg/m2 rituximab. Phase 2 explored 30 and 45 mg/kg magrolimab. Primary end points were treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) and objective response rate (ORR). Secondary end …

Protective Effect And Molecular Mechanisms Of Human Non-Neutralizing Cross-Reactive Spike Antibodies Elicited By Sars-Cov-2 Mrna Vaccination, Jordan J Clark, Ali H Ellebedy, Et Al. Nov 2024

Protective Effect And Molecular Mechanisms Of Human Non-Neutralizing Cross-Reactive Spike Antibodies Elicited By Sars-Cov-2 Mrna Vaccination, Jordan J Clark, Ali H Ellebedy, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Neutralizing antibodies correlate with protection against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Recent studies, however, show that binding antibody titers, in the absence of robust neutralizing activity, also correlate with protection against disease progression. Non-neutralizing antibodies cannot directly protect against infection but may recruit effector cells and thus contribute to the clearance of infected cells. Additionally, they often bind conserved epitopes across multiple variants. Here, we characterize 42 human monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-vaccinated individuals. Most of these antibodies exhibit no neutralizing activity in vitro, but several non-neutralizing antibodies provide protection against lethal challenge with SARS-CoV-2 …

Current Therapeutic Opportunities For Estrogen Receptor Mutant Breast Cancer, Murugesan Palaniappan Nov 2024

Current Therapeutic Opportunities For Estrogen Receptor Mutant Breast Cancer, Murugesan Palaniappan

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Estrogen receptor α (ERα) drives two out of three breast cancers and therefore ERα is a major therapeutic target for ER-positive breast cancer patients. Drugs that inhibit ERα activity or block estrogen synthesis in the body are currently being used in the clinic to treat ER-positive breast cancer and have been quite successful in controlling breast cancer progression for the majority of patients. However, ER-positive breast cancer often becomes resistant to these endocrine therapies, leading to endocrine-resistant metastatic breast cancer, a very aggressive cancer that leads to death. Recent large-scale genomic studies have revealed a series of activating somatic mutations …

Modulation Of Energetic And Lipid Pathways By Curcumin As A Potential Chemopreventive Strategy In Human Prostate Cancer Cells, Michele Pellegrino, Maria Antonietta Occhiuzzi, Fedora Grande, Ilaria Stefania Pagani, Stefano Aquaro, Paola Tucci Nov 2024

Modulation Of Energetic And Lipid Pathways By Curcumin As A Potential Chemopreventive Strategy In Human Prostate Cancer Cells, Michele Pellegrino, Maria Antonietta Occhiuzzi, Fedora Grande, Ilaria Stefania Pagani, Stefano Aquaro, Paola Tucci

Staff and Researcher Publications

In Western industrialized countries, prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common malignant disease and prevalent cause of death for men. Epidemiological studies have shown that curcumin (CUR) either prevents PCa initiation or delays its progression to a more aggressive and treatment-refractory form, thus reducing related mortality. Our previous studies have proven the anticancer, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties of CUR on PCa cells. However, there are few reports of the effect of CUR on energy and lipid pathways in PCa. Herein, we show that CUR can modulate the two metabolic energy pathways, increasing glycolytic reserve and reducing oxidative phosphorylation. Moreover, …
