Accumbal Plasticity And Associated Behavioral Adaptations In The Spared Nerve Injury Model Of Chronic Neuropathic Pain, Yu-Hsuan Chang Nov 2024

Accumbal Plasticity And Associated Behavioral Adaptations In The Spared Nerve Injury Model Of Chronic Neuropathic Pain, Yu-Hsuan Chang

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chronic pain is a debilitating neurological disorder that affects hundreds of millions of individuals worldwide. It is associated with cognitive symptoms such as cognitive inflexibility, which is defined as the inability to adaptively update behavior in response to changing environmental conditions. To date, there are no effective treatments for these symptoms, even though they substantially contribute to the decreased quality of life of chronic pain patients and are associated with reduced efficacy of pain management strategies. Therefore, understanding the neural circuit adaptations that drive cognitive symptoms of chronic pain, like cognitive inflexibility, is essential for improving existing treatments for this …

Kidman, Cathy, Sadie Mcnish

Querying the Past: LGBTQ Maine Oral History Project Collection

Cathy Kidman, is a 60-year-old lesbian activist who has been involved in LGBTQ and HIV/AIDS advocacy work in Maine since the 1990s. Kidman first became involved in activism through her work at The AIDS Project in Portland in the late 1980s, during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. This led her to become an adult advisor for the LGBTQ youth organization Outright, which she helped build into a nonprofit organization. Kidman describes how the AIDS epidemic catalyzed LGBTQ activism, bringing together the gay, lesbian, and bisexual communities that had previously been more separate. She talks about the importance of creating …

How Grading Systems, Classroom Management, And External Factors Affect A Students Intrinsic Motivation In The Classroom, Mckenzie L. Carrier Nov 2024

How Grading Systems, Classroom Management, And External Factors Affect A Students Intrinsic Motivation In The Classroom, Mckenzie L. Carrier

Honors Theses

The idea of motivation in the classroom is one that often ends up with the students who are often motivated by external factors rather than internal ones. Research increasingly demonstrates how this idea of extrinsic motivation has affected students, but intrinsic motivation is more effective for students in a long-term setting. This study will examine the influence of grading contracts and traditional grading on undergraduate students’ sense of motivation in their college ENG 102/102R classes by understanding how students define success, and their level of likeness to being motivated with a grading system. The researcher created and distributed an original …

The Role Of Open Education And Faculty Gender In Shaping Student Perceptions, Virginia Clinton-Lisell, Alison E. Kelly Nov 2024

The Role Of Open Education And Faculty Gender In Shaping Student Perceptions, Virginia Clinton-Lisell, Alison E. Kelly

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

Student perceptions of open education, both open educational resources (OER) and open pedagogy, are typically reported as positive in research studies. However, there is a need for controlled research to better understand the specific effects of open education. Furthermore, it is not understood how faculty gender, often noted to be influential in student perceptions of courses, interacts with open education. The current study addressed these issues in a controlled experiment in which college students (N = 413) were randomly assigned to read vignettes of course descriptions that varied based on textbook type (OER or commercial), pedagogy (open or closed), and …

Influence Of Teachers’ Secondary Traumatic Symptoms On Teacher Attrition In Low Socioeconomic Status Schools, Danielle Ryan Reilly

Student Theses and Dissertations

Influence of Teachers’ Secondary Traumatic Symptoms on Teacher Attrition in Low Socioeconomic Schools The current study investigated the pervasive issue of secondary traumatic symptoms (STS) among educators in South Carolina’s Title I secondary low socioeconomic status (SES) schools. The research problem centers on the influence of STS on teachers’ compassion fatigue (CF), burnout (BO), sense of satisfaction (SOS), and overall intention to resign (ITR) from the teaching profession. With the overarching goal of information interventions and support systems, the study was inspired by Ludick and Figley’s Compassion Fatigue Resilience (CFR) model and Figley’s work on CF. The current study employed …

Staff Education On The Rapid Mood Screener In An Outpatient Psychiatric Setting: Enhance Screening Practices, Yetunde Fakinlede Nov 2024

Staff Education On The Rapid Mood Screener In An Outpatient Psychiatric Setting: Enhance Screening Practices, Yetunde Fakinlede

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Summary The persistent misdiagnosis of bipolar disorder in this psychiatric practice was thought to be due to the provider's lack of knowledge and confidence in using assessment tools. Rapid Mood Screener (RMS) is a validated brief screening tool that differentiates between bipolar disorder and unipolar depression. In this project, I educated outpatient psychiatric nurse practitioners and staff in using RMS. The project practice-focused question was: Will an educational intervention improve the knowledge and self-efficacy of the outpatient mental health providers and staff regarding using Rapid Mood Screener? I followed the ADDIE framework and incorporated Knowles' adult learning theory for the …

Female Entrepreneurs' Strategies For Obtaining Startup Funding, Twana L. Broadway

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Female entrepreneurs encounter distinct challenges when seeking funding, which can impede their business growth and long-term success. Addressing these women's strategies to secure financial resources is essential for fostering entrepreneurial advancement. Grounded in the resource mobilization theory, this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to explore female entrepreneurs' strategies to obtain funding. The participants were six female entrepreneurs from diverse sectors who successfully acquired funding for their ventures. Data were collected exclusively through semistructured interviews, as no business financial documents were obtained. Through thematic analysis, three themes were identified: (a) personal financial management, (b) building financial relationships, and (c) strategic networking and …

Staff Education Presentation: Addressing Polypharmacy As A Risk Factor For Falls Among Older Adults With Psychiatric Disorders, Yetunde E. Adegoroye

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The focus of this doctoral project was to address the practice problem of polypharmacy and its association with falls among older adults with psychiatric conditions. The existing evidence shows that polypharmacy, which is defined as the concurrent use of five or more medications, increases the risk of falls, which leads to hospitalization, higher healthcare costs, and reduced quality of life (Varghese et al., 2024). Within the practice setting, it is Crucial to manage polypharmacy to enhance patient safety. The purpose of this project was to enhance medical staff knowledge regarding effective evidence-based strategies for reducing polypharmacy, through an educational presentation. …

Insecta Mundi

A small population of Entypus ochrocerus Dahlbom, a predominantly Greater Antilles spider wasp (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae: Pepsinae), is reported for the first time from the continental United States based on photographs and associated information from iNaturalist.org. The species was initially misidentified online as E. unifasciatus unifasciatus (Say) or Entypus sp. However, Entypus u. unifasciatus individuals from east of the 100th Meridian in the United States typically have melanochromatic (dark) wings with a subapical xanthochromatic (orange-amber) patch. Entypus ochrocerus from Miami-Dade County, Florida is differentiated from E. u. unifasciatus by its black body with dark greenish blue reflections …
