Catholic Responses To Peacebuilding, Climate Change, And Extractive Industries, William N. Holden, Kathleen Nadeau Nov 2024

Catholic Responses To Peacebuilding, Climate Change, And Extractive Industries, William N. Holden, Kathleen Nadeau

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

The paper overviews the Catholic response to addressing climate change-related problems and its peacekeeping efforts in the conflict zones impacted by natural and manmade disasters. It argues for the importance of transforming the dominant economic paradigm based on extracting natural resources for sale around the world, into a more environmentally sound approach that promotes the sustainable use of renewable energy sources and the greenifying of the natural environment. It calls for a world in which humans are seen as stewards of creation and their cities are constructed with the view of tendering and caring for other living sentient species and …

Fitting Food To Circumstances: Potential Contributions Of Philippine Culinary Heritage To Disaster Risk Reduction, Felice Prudente Sta. Maria Nov 2024

Fitting Food To Circumstances: Potential Contributions Of Philippine Culinary Heritage To Disaster Risk Reduction, Felice Prudente Sta. Maria

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Cultural legacies include a society’s emergency preparedness. Geological hazards such as the movement of the West Valley Fault will result in a metadisaster. Food security is fundamental to community resilience, a strategy for disaster risk reduction. Heritage food practices may contribute to food security during emergencies and disasters. Seasonal weather conditions and natural calamities have forced continuing developments in Philippine cuisine. Convenience foods, home and urban gardening, as well as food preservation continue to be altered appropriately to variations in societal anxieties, aspirations, and hopefully now, disaster preparedness.

Berries In Baskets Versus Apples In Crates: Arguing For Ecocentrism In A Post-Covid World, Abhik Gupta Nov 2024

Berries In Baskets Versus Apples In Crates: Arguing For Ecocentrism In A Post-Covid World, Abhik Gupta

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

The global outbreak of COVID-19 has raised questions about human relationships with nature vis-à-vis development models that are largely followed worldwide. Conservation biologist Raymond F. Dasmann introduced the concept of “ecosystem people” to describe predominantly rural communities who largely depend on the resources available in one or a few ecosystems around them. These societies are also characterized by their close relationships with nature and their ecocentric worldviews. However, the world today is dominated by “biosphere people” who populate the urban areas and typically use resources extracted from all over the world. This biosphere model of existence has also given rise …

Relational Egalitarianism And The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jacqueline Marie J. Tolentino Nov 2024

Relational Egalitarianism And The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jacqueline Marie J. Tolentino

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

The current COVID-19 pandemic has called for unprecedented measures to contain it and, as such, has reinforced and produced complex and intertwining health and non-health inequalities. I take the perspective of relational egalitarianism and argue that these inequalities are not only issues of public health and economics but also of social justice. I thus aim to construct a relational egalitarian framework to examine how and why the inequalities of COVID-19 are unjust and to work out what structural changes and processes might be required to justly respond to these inequalities.

Normalizing The Population: The Biopolitics Of The "New Normal", Federico José T. Lagdameo Nov 2024

Normalizing The Population: The Biopolitics Of The "New Normal", Federico José T. Lagdameo

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

While the whole world is trying to get its bearings in the face of the radical changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, two prevailing attitudes or approaches have emerged: (1) a yearning for a return to pre-COVID-19 normalcy typified by what I call the “typhoon-shelter approach” and (2) recognizing the irreversibility of the current condition and seeking to establish a “new normal.” The biopolitical analysis employed in this paper reveals unintended consequences that slip through the mesh of traditional forms of critique centered on capital, ideology, or class conflict. Specifically, the “new normal” project prevents the free movement of …

Disease And Disparities: The Structural Violence In The Time Of Our Covidized Lives, Aurelio S. Agcaoili Nov 2024

Disease And Disparities: The Structural Violence In The Time Of Our Covidized Lives, Aurelio S. Agcaoili

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

The paper argues that when a country’s social structures— political, economic, and cultural—are arranged such that the arrangement results in a dichotomy between the class of the privileged and the class of the less privileged, any act of addressing a pandemic such as the COVID-19 will always end up in another pandemic: the pandemic of government neglect and ineptitude. There is only one way out in ensuring that this double pandemic can be addressed: a return to the foundations of a good life for all—a democracy that secures that the good of collective life is for all.

Covid-19: Social Disease And Public Prudence, Peter Murphy

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

The article profiles the social aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic including the social component of virus transmission, the parallels between national and regional social distancing habits, and the impact of COVID-19 on populations. The interaction of low-contact and high-contact cultures with the COVID-19 virus is analyzed. The public policy response is examined with particular reference to proportionality in decision-making. The article explores the role of mid-range, balanced policies and temperate, moderate actions in dealing with a serious public health issue.
