Lifestyle, Values, And The Meaning Of Life, Ashok Vohra Nov 2024

Lifestyle, Values, And The Meaning Of Life, Ashok Vohra

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

There are alternative lifestyles. We choose the one which in our opinion will help us to fulfill our voluntarily chosen purpose or meaning of our life. The paper explores the meaning of “meaning of life.” To understand the notion of meaning of life, I have made an exhaustive and critical survey of the philosophical literature of both Eastern and Western philosophy. I have argued that one finds the meaning of one’s life and fulfills it, if and only if one follows one’s true nature and does not blindly follow what others are doing.

Chiron And The Machines Of Loving Grace: On Optimism, Pessimism, And Singularity, John T. Giordano Nov 2024

Chiron And The Machines Of Loving Grace: On Optimism, Pessimism, And Singularity, John T. Giordano

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Singularity has been a concern of the developers of cybernetics and artificial intelligence (AI) since the pioneering writings of such thinkers as Norbert Weiner. Yet many accept the inevitability of systems of AI surpassing human control and are optimistic that machine intelligence will harmonize human life with our environment. This essay examines this optimism against a reading of two poets: Richard Brautigan and Friedrich Hölderlin. Through these readings, it will attempt to show that the eclipse of nature by human beings can be used to examine the eclipse of the human being by machine intelligence. Thus, what is missing in …

The Lure Of Liking And Being Liked: Philippine Cuisine At The Turn Of The Nineteenth Century, Felice Prudente Sta. Maria Nov 2024

The Lure Of Liking And Being Liked: Philippine Cuisine At The Turn Of The Nineteenth Century, Felice Prudente Sta. Maria

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

When the Philippine archipelago was attached to the Spanish Empire from 1565 to 1898, native food and drink were exposed to new foreign ingredients, cooking techniques and technologies, tastes and preparations, as well as terms and status indicators. While there were required foods and food ways prescribed by Roman Catholicism as it acquired converts, there were also culinary attractions that made their way into Philippine culinary heritage seemingly by independent choice. Their Spanish-ness may have been one reason they were liked. There also could have been practical reasons for their acceptance ranging from portability to adaptability, as well as subjective …

Exploring The Philosophy Of Development Through UexküLl's Notion Of Umwelt, Yuhi Fujita Nov 2024

Exploring The Philosophy Of Development Through UexküLl's Notion Of Umwelt, Yuhi Fujita

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

This paper aims to depict the development of human beings as a transformative relationship between individuals and their world. Anchored on Uexküll’s concept of the environment, “Umwelt,” and further developed through the works of Heidegger, Kokubun, and Merleau-Ponty, I present the relationship between man and the world through the formation of the world and the movement of organisms between Umwelts. For Heidegger, humans live while forming their own world whereas animals can only be “poor in world.” Kokubun further emphasizes that human beings live while moving through various Umwelts. But according to Merleau-Ponty, human bodies reconfigure their fields of action, …

Unmasking The 'New Normal' And The 'Vernacular Of The Veracious' During A Pandemic, Aurelio S. Agcaoili Nov 2024

Unmasking The 'New Normal' And The 'Vernacular Of The Veracious' During A Pandemic, Aurelio S. Agcaoili

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

This paper argues that the deployment of a figurative language like the phrase “new normal” and many other verbal formulations during a pandemic is a form of power and control by political leaders. This deployment is calculated and calculating as it is meant to condition the minds of the masses that depend on the ruling political class for clarity, guidance, and some form of redemption. These “weaponized” words are presented as expressions of the veracious—essentially a vernacular of power—by persons of authority for a semblance of credibility. There are at least two versions of the veracious that are at play …

Doubting Thomas And Contemporary Education, Jovino De Guzman Miroy Nov 2024

Doubting Thomas And Contemporary Education, Jovino De Guzman Miroy

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

This paper aims to discuss what kind of training in doubt Filipino students require in the twenty-first century. To answer this question, the study alludes to the figure of Thomas the Doubter. Students often have a great deal of difficulty accepting the need to learn the skills of doubt and inquiry, making them more vulnerable to what Stuart Sim calls “empires of belief.” This essay discusses how reading Sacred Scriptures may lead to improved understanding of the dynamic relationships among inquiry, doubt, and belief. After explaining what doubt and skepticism mean, skepticism in the New Testament will be discussed. It …

Writing And Being Human, Jeffrey M. Centeno Nov 2024

Writing And Being Human, Jeffrey M. Centeno

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Truth is as moral as political in nature. This relation must be asserted more than ever, especially when seen against the background of today’s social media phenomenon, where people express their views about anything and anyone at an unprecedented speed and reach. Within the context of the academic world, the search for truth serves as the moral foundation of authorship and guides the practice of academic freedom. Teaching by writing affects the formation of fellow human beings for good or ill. Thus, every author must write only what is true, in view of communicating factual information, and not “fake news.” …
