Driving Corporate Environmental Responsibility With Tax Incentives And Carbon Taxation, Riya Dhall

Journal of Law and Policy

In response to the worsening global climate crisis, this Note examines the potential role of tax policy in encouraging corporate environmental responsibility. Focusing on tax incentives and a proposed federal carbon tax, it explores how strategic tax measures could drive corporations to mitigate their environmental impact. Through an analysis of economic and regulatory measures, such as cap-and-trade and excise taxes, alongside recent legislation like the Inflation Reduction Act, this Note assesses the potential of tax credits and carbon taxes to reduce corporate emissions. It further discusses the emergence of benefit corporations, specifically B Corp certified companies, such as Patagonia and …

The Pet Fish Canon, William N. Eskridge Jr. Dec 2024

The Pet Fish Canon, William N. Eskridge Jr.

Journal of Law and Policy

Inspired by the work of the late Professor Larry Solan, this article proposes that judges recognize as one of the textualist canons of statutory construction a “pet fish” canon. Such a canon would posit that when an ordinary reader would understand two or more words to yield a meaning that is different than the sum of the two words defined separately, the statutory interpreter should not disaggregate them. The Roberts Court has already followed such a linguistic precept in some statutory cases, and this article proposes that the Court recognize this as a canon considered at least as seriously as …

Grammar & Syntax Arguments On The Roberts Court, Anita S. Krishnakumar Dec 2024

Grammar & Syntax Arguments On The Roberts Court, Anita S. Krishnakumar

Journal of Law and Policy

In his excellent book, The Language of Judges, Professor Solan demonstrates how judges use grammatical or linguistic arguments to avoid acknowledging statutory ambiguity—and how they often get the grammar or linguistics wrong. Since his book was published, textualism has become the dominant interpretive approach on the U.S. Supreme Court—and we have seen increasingly prominent battles involving grammatical devices and rules. This comment takes Professor Solan’s analysis as a jumping off point to evaluate how grammar and linguistic arguments are employed on the modern Supreme Court, in the age of textualism. The comment offers a brief empirical and doctrinal assessment of …

Silent Suffering: Demanding Individual Accountability For Sexual Assault Against Disabled Children In School Environments, Stephanie Flores Dec 2024

Silent Suffering: Demanding Individual Accountability For Sexual Assault Against Disabled Children In School Environments, Stephanie Flores

Journal of Law and Policy

Disabled children are among the most vulnerable in society, particularly in school environments where they depend on the actions and care of others for their safety. These children face significantly higher risks of sexual abuse than their non-disabled peers, and school officials' negligence can exacerbate this danger. Despite the prevalence of such cases, the Fifth Circuit's refusal to recognize school officials’ liability under the state-created danger doctrine, as seen in Fisher v. Moore, deprives disabled children of adequate legal recourse under 42 U.S.C. § 1983. The decision holds that school officials cannot be held personally liable for the peer-inflicted sexual …

Growing Rich Off The Fruits Of Private Incarceration, Joseph Hennessy Dec 2024

Growing Rich Off The Fruits Of Private Incarceration, Joseph Hennessy

Journal of Law and Policy

Mass incarceration is a uniquely American phenomenon. With roots in chattel slavery, modern mass incarceration truly exploded in the latter half of the 20th Century. As Reagan-era politicians advocated for fiscal conservatism on the one hand and heavy-handed responses to crime on the other, private prison pioneers saw an opportunity to derive profit from society’s most vulnerable. Today, private prisons house as much as half of some states’ total prison population, and private prison corporations have demonstrated an insatiable desire to expand their reach. This Note explores the unique social vulnerability of privately incarcerated people through a statutory and judicial …

Property Rights Or Obstacles To Progress?: The Fundamental Flaws In Takings Jurisprudence, Liam Higgins Dec 2024

Property Rights Or Obstacles To Progress?: The Fundamental Flaws In Takings Jurisprudence, Liam Higgins

Journal of Law and Policy

New York boasts some of the strongest protections for tenants out of all jurisdictions throughout the country. Chief among these laws is the state Rent Stabilization Law (“RSL”). Among other protections, the RSL has limited excessive rent increases on regulated apartments, granted tenants a right of renewal so that they could remain in their homes, and permitted family members to take over the tenancy of their loved ones upon their passing. The RSL has been amended several times throughout its history, each time providing more or less protections depending on the administration at the time. Recently, in 2019, the New …

The Equal Pay Game Changer: Using Mandatory Reporting To Encourage Corporations In The Sports Ecosystem To Increase Investment In Women’S Sports, Caroline Strauss Dec 2024

The Equal Pay Game Changer: Using Mandatory Reporting To Encourage Corporations In The Sports Ecosystem To Increase Investment In Women’S Sports, Caroline Strauss

Journal of Law and Policy

In 2016, the United States Women’s National Team began a lengthy fight for equal pay by filing a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In 2019, the fight continued when the team sued the United States Soccer Federation for gender discrimination. When the court granted summary judgment to the U.S. Soccer Federation on their Equal Pay Act claim, it closed the door for the team to achieve equal pay through a public law remedy. The tedious fight came to an end with a settlement which guaranteed that the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams would be paid equally. Although …

The Role Of Lifr Signaling In Innate Immunity, Laura Kahn Serrudo Dec 2024

The Role Of Lifr Signaling In Innate Immunity, Laura Kahn Serrudo

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The localized signals that bone marrow (BM) hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and immune cells receive are critical in regulating their responses in the steady state and inflammation. Monocytes are an abundant and key population in the innate immune response that originates in the BM, and they circulate to monitor the periphery. Monocytes are composed of many subsets that have essential and specific functions, including swift egress from the BM, production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and differentiation into monocyte-derived dendritic cells (MoDCs), which are required for efficient pathogen eradication.

Here, we uncovered LIFR (leukemia inhibitory factor receptor) restrains low-grade chronic inflammation in …

A Pan-Cancer Single-Cell Analysis Of Intratumoral Copy Number Diversity And Evolution, Hanghui Ye Dec 2024

A Pan-Cancer Single-Cell Analysis Of Intratumoral Copy Number Diversity And Evolution, Hanghui Ye

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Aneuploidy is a hallmark of human cancers, with many copy number aberrations (CNAs) being associated with disease progression. Previous studies have revealed extensive inter-patient heterogeneity (IPH) in copy number profiles. However, the extent of intratumoral heterogeneity (ITH) and its evolutionary dynamics remain poorly understood.

To address these gaps, we developed Acoustic Cell Tagmentation (ACT), an advanced single-cell single-molecule DNA sequencing (scDNA-seq) technology, to resolve the copy number substructure of human tumors and investigate the evolution of aneuploidy. Applying ACT to eight triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients to profile 9,765 aneuploid tumor cells, we discovered that following initial punctuated copy number …

Oncolytic Viruses Enhance Long-Term Nk Cell Anti-Tumor Cytotoxicity Through Ap-1 And Irf Pathway Activation, Xin Ru Jiang

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Natural killer (NK) cell therapeutics have emerged as a promising strategy in adoptive cellular therapy. While genetic modifications of NK cells can enhance their antitumor activity, modulating the tumor to augment NK cell recognition and function remains underexplored. In this study, we investigated the combination of NK cells with oncolytic viruses to treat solid tumors, specifically pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and glioblastoma. We demonstrated that infecting tumor cells with the oncolytic adenovirus Delta-24-RGD significantly increases their susceptibility to NK cell cytotoxicity, driven by a hyperactivated NK cell phenotype characterized by elevated expression of activating receptors and cytotoxicity markers. In a patient-derived …

Investigating The Rare Aneuploid Cells In Normal Breast And Therapeutic Resistance In Triple Negative Breast Cancer Using Single Cell Genomics, Yiyun Lin

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Aneuploid epithelial cells are common in breast cancer, however their presence in normal breast tissues is not well understood. To address this question, we applied single cell DNA sequencing to profile copy number alterations (CNAs) in 83,206 epithelial cells from breast tissues of 49 healthy women and single cell DNA&ATAC co-assays to 19 women. Our data shows that all women harbored rare aneuploid epithelial cells (median 3.19%) that increased with age. Many aneuploid epithelial cells (median 82.22%) in normal breast tissues underwent clonal expansions and harbored CNAs reminiscent of invasive breast cancers (gains of 1q, losses of 10q, 16q and …

Local Or Systemic Antibody-Targeted Sting Activation Drives Pro- Inflammatory Stromal Metabolic Changes And Downregulates C-Myc Oncoprotein, Akash Boda Dec 2024

Local Or Systemic Antibody-Targeted Sting Activation Drives Pro- Inflammatory Stromal Metabolic Changes And Downregulates C-Myc Oncoprotein, Akash Boda

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The past decade has witnessed remarkable advances in the field of cancer immunotherapy. Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) has emerged as a cornerstone, achieving long-lasting tumor regression in several types of cancer. However, its effectiveness is often limited, particularly in certain tumor types. Immunologically "cold" tumors, such as pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), remain clinically unresponsive to ICB, presenting a significant challenge in oncology. Amidst these challenges, the stimulation of the STING pathway via small molecule synthetic agonists has surfaced as a promising strategy. Acting as an in-situ vaccine, STING activation has the potential to transform the immune landscape of cold tumors …

Associations Between Metabolic Disorders And Sjögren’S Disease, Chihiro Iwaya, Junichi Iwata Dec 2024

Associations Between Metabolic Disorders And Sjögren’S Disease, Chihiro Iwaya, Junichi Iwata

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Sjögren’s disease (SjD) is a systemic autoimmune disorder characterized by dry eyes and mouth caused by chronic inflammation and is often accompanied by various extra-glandular manifestations, including fatigue and diffuse pain. Although the pathogenesis of the disease remains elusive, several factors (e.g. environmental, genetic and hormonal factors, abnormal metabolic status) are associated with this condition. Accumulating evidence suggests a potential role of cholesterol metabolism in immune and non-immune modulation in various diseases. In this review, we summarize the current findings on the associations between cholesterol metabolism and SjD.

The Role Of Ganglioside Gd2 And Gd3 Synthase (St8sia1) In The Regulation Of Immune Suppression In Breast Cancer, Bolutyfe Oderinde

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Gangliosides are acidic glycosphingolipids involved in cell adhesion, proliferation, and modulation of signal transduction pathways. It has been reported that tumor-shed gangliosides influence the activity of immune cells including macrophages, NK cells, and T cells. GD3 synthase (GD3S) is the key enzyme that regulates the biosynthesis of the b and c series gangliosides, particularly GD3 and GD2, and studies have shown that GD3S is upregulated in most tumors and plays a role in tumor progression. Similarly, we have previously found GD3S to be significantly upregulated in GD2+ breast cancer stem cells (BCSC) compared to GD2- cells, and the knockdown of …

Smooth Muscle Cell Stress Response: Essential In Atherosclerotic Pathogenesis, Pujun Guan Dec 2024

Smooth Muscle Cell Stress Response: Essential In Atherosclerotic Pathogenesis, Pujun Guan

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Atherosclerosis remains the leading cause of death worldwide. Recent research using lineage tracing and single-cell RNA sequencing unveiled a previously undescribed and prominent role of smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in atherosclerotic plaque formation. SMCs undergo complex phenotypic modulation characterized by de-differentiation of SMCs and heterogeneously increased expression of markers for macrophages, fibroblasts, chondrocytes, and mesenchymal stem cells as plaques form. Cultured SMCs exposed to exogenous cholesterol mimic many of the phenotypic changes associated with plaque formation, and our lab determined this SMC modulation is driven by cholesterol entering the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and triggering ER stress and PERK signaling. Further, …

Assessing The Temporal Role Of Mir-200 Loss In Murine Models Of Nsclc, Jared Fradette

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related deaths in the United States, with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) making up a majority of new diagnoses. Metastasis is the big killer in NSCLC and is driven by epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and immune evasion. The microRNA 200 family is a master regulator of EMT and is implicated in immune regulation. In this study we have developed a novel genetically engineered mouse model (GEMM) and derived primary cell lines from them to explore the role of microRNA-200 in early EMT and immune changes. Our model combines conditional activation of KrasG12D …

Practical And Lightweight Defense Against Website Fingerprinting, Colman Mcguan, Chansu Yu, Kyoungwon Suh Dec 2024

Practical And Lightweight Defense Against Website Fingerprinting, Colman Mcguan, Chansu Yu, Kyoungwon Suh

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Website fingerprinting is a passive network traffic analysis technique that enables an adversary to identify the website visited by a user despite encryption and the use of privacy services such as Tor. Several website fingerprinting defenses built on top of Tor have been proposed to guarantee a user's privacy by concealing trace features that are important to classification. However, some of the best defenses incur a high bandwidth and/or latency overhead. To combat this, new defenses have sought to be both lightweight - i.e., introduce a small amount of bandwidth overhead - and zero-delay to real network traffic. This work …

The Unconscious At Work: A Psychosocial Study Of Leaders' Unconscious Processes Impacting Participatory Change Leadership, Vanessa Hills

Dissertations

This dissertation explores the varied dynamics impacting how organizational leaders conceptualize and enact their roles in participatory change processes. To that end, a multiple-case study informed by a psycho-social approach and using Free Association Narrative Interview (FANI) methods was conducted. Each case was comprised of a single business leader. The findings, presented through individual case analyses and cross-case comparisons, reveal a discrepancy between leaders’ rhetoric and the reality of their change leadership behaviors. While leaders express support for collaborative change, factors such as a desire for control, fear of failure, and bias toward their own capabilities lead them to adopt …

Could Renewable Energy Use Boost Goods Export Performance In Asean?, Sherina Rafidah Khairunnisa, Siskarossa Ika Oktora

Economics and Finance in Indonesia

ASEAN economic integration increases trade opportunities and also triggers an increase in carbon emissions, especially from exports of goods. ASEAN needs to switch to renewable energy to improve the performance of goods exports. This study analyzes the influence of renewable energy on goods exports in ASEAN, 2010–2020. The results show that renewable energy positively impacts the performance of goods exports. Based on the results of this research, it is hoped that the government in each ASEAN country can strengthen regulations and policies on the use of renewable energy by providing incentives for producers and exporters who use renewable energy.

Redressing Judicial Misbehavior: An Integrated Approach To Judicial Immunity, Nancy Amoury Combs Dec 2024

Redressing Judicial Misbehavior: An Integrated Approach To Judicial Immunity, Nancy Amoury Combs

Faculty Publications

Immunities generate intense public interest and controversy. Whether it is the sweeping presidential immunity that former President Trump has claimed or the qualified immunity that rogue police invoke to evade financial responsibility for their brutality, immunities stand as a highly contested aspect of the American legal system. Judicial immunity incites similar controversy. American judges possess absolute immunity from civil suits for their judicial acts, so victims are barred from seeking civil compensation, even against judges who engage in purposeful or malicious misconduct from the bench. For decades scholars have sought to curtail absolute judicial immunity, but they have overlooked a …
