Learning De-Biased Representations For Remote-Sensing Imagery, Zichen Tian, Zhaozheng Chen, Qianru Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Remote sensing (RS) imagery, requiring specialized satellites to collect and being difficult to annotate, suffers from data scarcity and class imbalance in certain spectrums. Due to data scarcity, training any large-scale RS models from scratch is unrealistic, and the alternative is to transfer pre-trained models by fine-tuning or a more data-efficient method LoRA. Due to class imbalance, transferred models exhibit strong bias, where features of the major class dominate over those of the minor class. In this paper, we propose debLoRA---a generic training approach that works with any LoRA variants to yield debiased features. It is an unsupervised learning approach …

Recent 3D large reconstruction models (LRMs) can generate high-quality 3D content in sub-seconds by integrating multi-view diffusion models with scalable multi-view reconstructors. Current works further leverage 3D Gaussian Splatting as 3D representation for improved visual quality and rendering efficiency. However, we observe that existing Gaussian reconstruction models often suffer from multi-view inconsistency and blurred textures. We attribute this to the compromise of multi-view information propagation in favor of adopting powerful yet computationally intensive architectures (e.g., Transformers). To address this issue, we introduce MVGamba, a general and lightweight Gaussian reconstruction model featuring a multi-view Gaussian reconstructor based on the RNN-like State …

Lova3 : Learning To Visual Question Answering, Asking And Assessment, Henry Hengyuan Zhao, Pan Zhou, Difei Gao, Bai Shou, Mike Zheng Shou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Question answering, asking, and assessment are three innate human traits crucial for understanding the world and acquiring knowledge. By enhancing these capabilities, humans can more effectively utilize data, leading to better comprehension and learning outcomes. Current Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) primarily focus on question answering, often neglecting the full potential of questioning and assessment skills. Inspired by the human learning mechanism, we introduce LOVA3 , an innovative framework named “Learning tO Visual question Answering, Asking and Assessment,” designed to equip MLLMs with these additional capabilities. Our approach involves the creation of two supplementary training tasks GenQA and EvalQA, aiming …

The Inclusion Of Metacognition In Source Evaluation Instruction, Anthony Tardiff Dec 2024

The Inclusion Of Metacognition In Source Evaluation Instruction, Anthony Tardiff

Communications in Information Literacy

Though the ACRL Framework holds metacognition as crucial to exercising information literacy, its emphasis was reduced from prominence in early drafts to a single mention in the final document. At the same time, few of the frequently-taught sets of source evaluation criteria include a step for self-awareness. This raises the question: do librarians explicitly teach metacognitive concepts when they teach source evaluation? Online library guides about source evaluation from various colleges and universities in Washington state were analyzed, and librarians who taught source evaluation were surveyed to determine whether and to what extent metacognitive concepts were included as part of …

Mapping Out Information Literacy: A Textbook Review, Alyssa Russo

Communications in Information Literacy

This narrative review examines the thematic content and evolution of information literacy textbooks published between 2005 and 2022. Analyzing sixteen textbooks, it explores two themes: the research process and conceptual foundations of information literacy. The research process theme highlights the procedural aspects of conducting library research, delineating the steps from topic selection to presentation. The conceptual foundations of IL theme reveals a discrepancy in how textbooks address the broader conceptual underpinnings of information literacy, particularly the context of a rapidly changing information society. This review highlights the focus on practical skills and the relative lack of discussions on broader contexts …

Morphometric Based Roughness Estimates For Wind Loading Applications In The Coastal Transition Zone, Hadley Rose Besing

Theses and Dissertations

This project was developed to support the Florida Tech Wireless Sensor Network System (WSNS) hurricane research team in determining wind loads during high-impact wind events. The WSNS team objectives included estimating the critical pressure (𝐶p) from observed 3-s gusts during high impact weather events (tropical cyclones). The field work was conducted at a single-story residential home in Satellite Beach, FL approximately 400 m from the coast. During data collection periods, more than 1-million 20-second LiDAR wind profiles were observed.

The bulk roughness at the test residence is characterized utilizing an existing morphometric technique with geometry that is derived …

Thinking And Doing Beyond Science And Risk Communication As Mere Transmission, Inez Z. Ponce De Leon Dec 2024

Thinking And Doing Beyond Science And Risk Communication As Mere Transmission, Inez Z. Ponce De Leon

Department of Communication Faculty Publications

I look back on my professional experience as both bench and social scientist, and examine my misun derstandings of science communication as a field, which were fueled by my ideologically-driven stance on the primacy of the bench sciences over all other fields of study. I begin with my work as a molecular biologist, continue with my socialization into the social sciences at the PhD level, and narrate my ex periences as a researcher attempting to break down the notion of science and risk communication as mere vessels for sharing scientific information. I do this by discussing my research findings, and …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

INTRODUCTION: Research suggests that perceived neighborhood social environments (PNSE) may contribute to gender and race/ethnicity-based sleep disparities. Our study aimed to examine associations between PNSE factors and adolescents' sleep patterns. As a secondary aim, we examined how gender and race/ethnic groups might moderate these associations.

METHOD: Data came from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (n=5158; mean age=15.34 years). Four self-reported sleep outcomes were created: 1) sleep duration (hours/night), 2) short sleep (≥8 hours [reference] vs <8 >hours), 3) parental set bedtime (10:00 PM/earlier [reference] among girls vs by 11:00PM vs by/after 12:00AM), and 4) sleep satisfaction (enough …

Brain metabolism perturbation can contribute to traits and diseases. We conducted a genome-wide association study for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and brain metabolite levels, identifying 205 independent associations (47.3% new signals, containing 11 new loci) for 139 CSF metabolites, and 32 independent associations (43.8% new signals, containing 4 new loci) for 31 brain metabolites. Of these, 96.9% (CSF) and 71.4% (brain) of the new signals belonged to previously analyzed metabolites in blood or urine. We integrated the metabolite quantitative trait loci (MQTLs) with 23 neurological, psychiatric and common human traits and diseases through colocalization to identify metabolites and biological processes implicated …

Study objectives: Alerts for vital sign abnormalities seek to identify meaningful patient instability while limiting alarm fatigue. Optimal vital sign alarm settings for postoperative patients remain unknown, as is whether alerts lead to effective clinical responses reducing vital sign disturbances. We conducted a 2-phase pilot study to identify thresholds and delays and test the hypothesis that alerts from continuous monitoring reduce the duration of vital sign abnormalities.

Design: Two-phase pilot.

Patients: 250 adults having major non-cardiac surgery.

Setting: Surgical wards.

Intervention: All patients had routine vital sign monitoring by nurses at 4-h intervals. We initially continuously recorded clinician-blinded saturation, heart …

Evaluating The Stress System Of The Grieving Brain: Corticotropin-Releasing Factors And Partner Loss In Female Coyotes, Rachel Tong Xin Ning Dec 2024

Evaluating The Stress System Of The Grieving Brain: Corticotropin-Releasing Factors And Partner Loss In Female Coyotes, Rachel Tong Xin Ning

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Forming social bonds is fundamental in helping us foster connections with others. The loss of a loved one often results in grief, stress, and loneliness, and the stress response system of the body has been implicated in the physiological symptoms associated with grieving. Corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) is the hormone that initiates the stress response in the body and acts at two different receptor subtypes CRF receptor (CRFR)1 and CRFF2. Many studies on CRF and social loss have been conducted in monogamous prairie voles, but studies in longer-lived monogamous mammals could improve understanding of the effects of losing pair bonds. …

Objective: Our objective was to prospectively investigate prediagnostic population-based metabolome for risk of hospitalized gout (ie, most accurate, severe, and costly cases), accounting for serum urate.

Methods: We conducted prediagnostic metabolome-wide analyses among 249,677 UK Biobank participants with nuclear magnetic resonance metabolomic profiling (N = 168 metabolites, including eight amino acids) from baseline blood samples (2006-2010) without a history of gout. We calculated multivariable hazard ratios (HRs) for hospitalized incident gout, before and after adjusting for serum urate levels; we included patients with nonhospitalized incident gout in a sensitivity analysis. Potential causal effects were evaluated with two-sample Mendelian randomization.

Human Rights Forum Shopping In Transnational Sport Disputes, Ilias Bantekas Dec 2024

Human Rights Forum Shopping In Transnational Sport Disputes, Ilias Bantekas

Brooklyn Journal of International Law

Professional athletes must adhere to the dispute resolution mechanisms contained in their agreements with sport governing bodies (SGBs). These typically provide for SGB institutional arbitration with appeals against such awards to CAS, although in some instances direct recourse to CAS is also possible. These mechanisms do not cater for attendant human rights claims arising from the underlying dispute. This article suggests that a variety of sui generis forum shopping possibilities are available to address this deficit. Applicants may approach national courts with a sufficient jurisdictional link to the SGB in question by raising constitutional (and by extension human rights) and …

Does The Loss Of Chance Doctrine Have A Chance In International Sport Arbitration?, Dmitry A. Pentsov

Brooklyn Journal of International Law

The Article analyzes whether and, if so, how, the loss of chance doctrine providing the basis for claims against person who deprived victims of a chance of occurrence of a certain result or decreased this chance could be used in international sport arbitration at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). It provides a comparative analysis of applicability of this doctrine under English law, French law, and the law of the State of New York to sport competitions and outlines potential problems of utilizing this doctrine in the CAS arbitration through domestic law based on choice-of-law rules. The Article argues …

The Geopolitics Of Group Referrals To The International Criminal Court And Its Implications On The Court's Legitimacy And Credibility, Dr. Destaw A. Yigzaw Dec 2024

The Geopolitics Of Group Referrals To The International Criminal Court And Its Implications On The Court's Legitimacy And Credibility, Dr. Destaw A. Yigzaw

Brooklyn Journal of International Law

Under the Rome Statute, situations are referred to the International Criminal Court (“ICC” or “Court”) either by a state party or the Security Council. In recent years, however, referrals from both sources have become difficult to come by. Instead, there is an evolving practice of referrals by a coalition of third states parties (“group referrals”). Yet, a group referral as a trigger mechanism does not have an explicit textual basis under the Rome Statute (“Statute” or “ICC Statute”). There is no rationale for it either, since a referral by a single state party is all that is needed to trigger …

North Korean Trash Balloons And International Law, Andrew Wolman Dec 2024

North Korean Trash Balloons And International Law, Andrew Wolman

Brooklyn Journal of International Law

In May 2024, North Korea introduced a new tactic to the inter-Korean drama: the launching of balloons full of trash into the South. To date, over 2,000 balloons of these balloons have been launched across the demilitarized zone, carrying a mixture of different types of waste as cargo. While they have led to little material damage, the trash balloons have raised tensions on the peninsula, and led to widespread condemnation, including on the grounds that they violate international law. In this paper I examine whether the launching of these balloons in fact does violate international law. I conclude that North …

Sliding Into Safety: Why Formal United Nations Or United States Sanctions Or Action Would Help Major League Baseball Curb Human Smuggling And Trafficking Issues, Maxwell Russ

Brooklyn Journal of International Law

Every year when the baseball season ends and the offseason begins, professional teams’ front offices go searching for the best available players. Often, incredibly talented baseball players can be found across the world and today, Major League Baseball (MLB) players come from across the globe. Yet, despite the global outreach of MLB, the process by which teams are allowed to search for, recruit, and sign foreign-born players remains largely unregulated by the league itself. For years, stories of players from foreign countries being subjected to shady and unethical practices have begun to surface. This dark side of baseball was even …

A Delicate Balance: The Japan-Us Status Of Forces Agreement Applying A Comparative Framework To Recommend Changes To Criminal Jurisdiction Provisions In The Japan-Us Status Of Forces Agreement To Better Protect The Interests Of Japan And The United States, Keara Schmeiser

Brooklyn Journal of International Law

The criminal jurisdiction provisions of the Japan-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement (“SOFA”), which governs the rights of US servicemembers deployed in Japan, must be amended. The recent Japanese criminal conviction of a U.S. naval officer focused U.S. lawmakers’ efforts on revising the Japan-U.S. SOFA. This led to a provision in the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (“NDAA”), which requires the U.S. Secretary of Defense and Secretary of State to analyze the largest existing U.S. bilateral agreements and their treatment of U.S. servicemembers’ rights in foreign courts and, by the end of 2024, report their findings to congressional committees. This Note …

Time To Stop Trip-Ing: The World Needs A New Geographical Indications Agreement, Evan Glatt Dec 2024

Time To Stop Trip-Ing: The World Needs A New Geographical Indications Agreement, Evan Glatt

Brooklyn Journal of International Law

When it comes to purchasing food and alcohol, a product’s name carries weight and helps consumers make decisions. When the product’s name includes a place and establishes a certain level of quality and expectation, consumers trust that the product is what it purports to be. This concept, the reputation of a particular food product by name, is known as a geographical indication (GI). GIs cover a wide range of products, from the well-known champagne to lesser known products such as Roquefort cheese. GIs create financial value for local producers, contribute to sustainability initiatives, and raise the quality of goods for …

Outlier On Lgbtq Rights: Japanese Ban On Same-Sex Marriage And Its Contradiction In The Age Of Globalization, Yumi Higashi

Brooklyn Journal of International Law

Japan is the only Group of Seven country yet to recognize same-sex marriage. Despite strong public support for marriage equality, the conservative dominance of the Japanese legislature and the Japanese courts’ deferential approach have stalled the change. This Note will analyze the legal issues and implications of Japan’s failure to recognize same-sex marriage and Japan’s worldwide inheritance tax regime, with an emphasis on cross-border succession and estate planning. Specifically, the Note argues that the United States, as the only country with which Japan has a treaty in estate, inheritance, and gift tax, should renegotiate the treaty as it could have …

Protecting Cultural Property From Climate Destruction: A Case Study Of Greece, Audrey Nadler Dec 2024

Protecting Cultural Property From Climate Destruction: A Case Study Of Greece, Audrey Nadler

Brooklyn Journal of International Law

Climate change poses an escalating threat to Greece’s cultural heritage, with ancient sites such as the Acropolis of Athens and the Palace of Knossos at risk from rising sea levels, wildfires, and pollution. Greece’s legal system includes protections for cultural property and aligns with international treaties, yet lacks sufficient integration between cultural heritage laws and environmental safeguards, leaving vital sites vulnerable. This Note contends that Greece must reinforce domestic law to bridge this gap and protect cultural assets from climate-induced harm. Addressing this deficiency through legal reforms and economic incentives could prevent irreversible damage to Greece’s cultural identity and fulfill …

Human Rights Due Diligence At The Intersection Of Corporate Compliance And Corporate Purpose, Stephen Kim Park Dec 2024

Human Rights Due Diligence At The Intersection Of Corporate Compliance And Corporate Purpose, Stephen Kim Park

Brooklyn Journal of Corporate, Financial & Commercial Law

The concept of human rights due diligence (“HRDD”) is one part of a broad and diverse range of approaches to address the responsibilities of business to society. Through laws requiring that companies identify and address their adverse impacts on workers, communities, and the environment, HRDD expands the role of corporate compliance in making companies accountable for the welfare of stakeholders. This Article addresses the implications of HRDD laws on how corporations operationalize corporate purpose and examines the barriers posed by corporate compliance practices to meaningfully—rather than cosmetically—enhance responsible business conduct.

What Should Caremark Encompass?, Claire A. Hill, Zohreh Zakiani Dec 2024

What Should Caremark Encompass?, Claire A. Hill, Zohreh Zakiani

Brooklyn Journal of Corporate, Financial & Commercial Law

Under In re Caremark Int’l Inc. Derivative Litig., decided in 1996, directors are required to oversee corporate compliance and can be liable for breaching their fiduciary duties if their oversight efforts do not suffice. Since it was decided, Caremark has been very influential, notwithstanding its high bar to liability. Notably, its influence far exceeds the actual probability that directors would be found liable under the doctrine. Instead, much of Caremark’s force is “soft,” through extra-legal mechanisms such as norms and pressures from various constituencies. Caremark clearly covers oversight for violations of law or regulation. But what, beyond those two things, …

Regulating Compliance Officers, Jennifer M. Pacella Dec 2024

Regulating Compliance Officers, Jennifer M. Pacella

Brooklyn Journal of Corporate, Financial & Commercial Law

Compliance officers are currently an unregulated body and, unlike the legal profession, are not subject to any particular set of professional guidelines that guide their behavior. The lack of a distinct compliance officer profession creates risks relating to heightened potential personal liability and the possibility of merging with another profession that is not exactly compatible with the compliance function. To mitigate these risks, this Article proposes the creation of a professional regulatory system for compliance officers that is industry-specific and self-regulated and discusses the various benefits that would stem from such a system.

Data Scraping For Generative Ai—To What Extent?, Jae Yeon Cecilia Kim

Brooklyn Journal of Corporate, Financial & Commercial Law

Generative AI platforms are developed by scraping data from other platforms. This raises complex copyright infringement issues that are yet to be resolved. Courts have attempted to address these problems using the fair use doctrine, which evaluates four factors to determine whether a use infringes on copyright: (1) the purpose and character of the use, (2) the nature of the use, (3) the amount and substantiality of the copyrighted work’s use, and (4) the impact of the use on the market for the original work. Despite efforts to apply this long-established doctrine, challenges persist, including difficulties in identifying the copyright …

A Call For Statutory Reform: Online Marketplaces That Profit From Product Sales Should Be Held Strictly Liable As Sellers, Mark Anderson

Brooklyn Journal of Corporate, Financial & Commercial Law

Today, Americans purchase roughly 16% of all consumer goods through online marketplaces such as Amazon. While traditional brick-and-mortar retailers that sell defective products are strictly liable for harm caused by those products, online marketplace retailers, which serve analogous roles in defective product sales, can often evade liability entirely. Amazon, for instance, is immune from liability for product defects in more than 60% of sales conducted on its website in almost every state. This Note explains why online marketplaces that profit from defective product sales should be strictly liable for harm those products cause, and why courts often refuse to hold …

How Sovereign Wealth Investment May Fail To Enter The United States Sports Market: Investigating The Governance Restricting Sportswashing, Zachary J. Braverman

Brooklyn Journal of Corporate, Financial & Commercial Law

In recent years, the world of sports has been disrupted by foreign nations engaging in human rights violations, masking their wrongdoings through sport-related investments. This practice, referred to as “sportswashing,” has negative impacts on both the sports industry at large and the individual victims whose suffering is perpetuated. Currently, there is no direct legislation preventing foreign investors from taking over sports franchises in the United States. However, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, the United Nations, and sports leagues’ private regulations, each provide means to resist sportswashing. This Note analyzes the problem of sportswashing, the existing framework …
