International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

BACKGROUND: Water is a crucial component of the human body, participating in numerous metabolic processes and playing a vital role in maintaining life and athletic performance. Water imbalance is a common occurrence among athletes, including those in Taekwondo, who are particularly susceptible to dehydration due to intense exercise, significant fluid loss, and pre-competition weight reduction. Proper hydration is crucial for taekwondo athletes. However, current water intake recommendations have not been specifically tailored to this sport.

Objective: To investigate the quantity and composition of daily fluid intake among Taekwondo athletes, with the aim of preventing dehydration and improper rehydration practices that …

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

Background/Purpose: Nowadays, the primary methods for evaluating archery techniques, especially the consistency, include force plates, motion capture systems, etc. However, these methods are characterized by their high cost, slow feedback, and lack of portability. Therefore, this study attempted to evaluate the consistency of archery techniques by using Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and to verify its feasibility.

Method: Six Chinese national archery team archers (3 men, 3 women, elite) participated in the 50m-target field test by using 5 IMUs (Xsens-DOT, Netherlands; 60Hz) and 8-lens Qualisys Motion Capture Equipment (Qualisys-OQUS-700, Sweden; 200Hz). Phases were divided based on Qualisys data, and the Coefficient …

A035: What Makes Ecological Sport Possible: Reflections On Lewis Mumford's Technological View Of Mass Sport, Qiang Gao, Guosheng Shi Dec 2024

A035: What Makes Ecological Sport Possible: Reflections On Lewis Mumford's Technological View Of Mass Sport, Qiang Gao, Guosheng Shi

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

Background/Purpose: Lewis Mumford insightfully points out that "if sport is played for sport's sake, then its primary significance is lost". Under the coercion of the machine system, sport has become a so-called spontaneous response to resist the machine system, but such spontaneous response has not succeeded in resisting the machine system, instead, it has made sport itself a compensatory system to stabilize the order under the machine system, which has led to a crisis in the ecology of sport itself. Mumford's critique is an effective path to solving the ecological crisis of sport by practicing deep ecological sport ideology. Deep …

Economical Acquisition Of Intersection Data To Facilitate Cav Operations Phase Ii – Implementation, Manish Gowda, Walt Fehr, Andrew Balmos, Richard Ajagu, David Hong, James Krogmeier, Montasir Abbas, Samuel Labi

Center for Connected and Automated Transportation

Cost-effective collection and distribution of intersection data are needed to facilitate traffic operations at intersections in the HDV era and particularly, in the prospective era of CAVs. Existing methods are time consuming and costly. Phase I of this research (executed under CCAT Project Nr. 71) developed a cost-effective intersection data collection and distribution device for this purpose. In Phase II of this research, the device prototype was bench tested in Lansing and field tested at Owosso. It was confirmed that the device successfully facilitates SPaT and MAP data collection and dissimulation to mobile devices. These deployments provided evidence that the …

An Unintentional Realist: Rural Poverty In Harold Bell Wright’S Ozarks Novels, John J. Han Dec 2024

An Unintentional Realist: Rural Poverty In Harold Bell Wright’S Ozarks Novels, John J. Han

KAUPA Letters

This paper explores the theme of rural poverty in Harold Bell Wright’s Ozarks novels, a topic often overlooked due to the romantic, Arcadian lens through which Wright portrays the region. Despite his idealized depictions of simple, spiritually fulfilling rural life, Wright’s personal experiences with poverty and his observations of Ozarks life offer valuable insights into the economic deprivation and isolation of the area. The analysis focuses on The Shepherd of the Hills, The Re-Creation of Brian Kent, and Ma Cinderella, examining how Wright portrays rural poverty, the self-sufficiency of Ozark natives, and the effects of poverty on their lives. While …

Leveraging Ai Tools In University Writing Instruction: Enhancing Student Success While Upholding Academic Integrity, Daisuke Akiba, Rebecca Garte Dec 2024

Leveraging Ai Tools In University Writing Instruction: Enhancing Student Success While Upholding Academic Integrity, Daisuke Akiba, Rebecca Garte

Publications and Research

The emergence of AI-powered Large Language Models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini, presents both opportunities and challenges for higher education, particularly regarding academic integrity in writing instruction. This exploratory study examines a novel pedagogical approach that integrates LLMs as required feedback tools in a university-level psychology writing assignment. The exclusive online approach emphasizes improvement through revision, requiring students to obtain AI-generated feedback on ungraded initial drafts based on an instructor-provided rubric, with final assessment focused on the quality of subsequent revisions. Analysis of survey data from 39 undergraduate students, incorporating both quantitative measures and qualitative responses, revealed several …

Patterns In Gray Wolf Pup Survival And Recruitment In Northern Minnesota, Andrea Hynes Dec 2024

Patterns In Gray Wolf Pup Survival And Recruitment In Northern Minnesota, Andrea Hynes

All NMU Master's Theses

Knowledge of how and why the vital rates of wildlife populations change through and over time is crucial for understanding wildlife population dynamics. Because estimating gray wolf pup survival is challenging, our understanding of pup survival and the factors influencing survival and recruitment is limited. I used a combination of litter counts and video observations from a large remote camera array to estimate annual wolf pup survival and recruitment and to evaluate intra-annual patterns in pup survival and recruitment within the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem, MN, USA. Mean annual pup survival during 2019–2023 was 0.24, and the mean annual recruitment rate …

Sensitive Grip Mounting Surfaces For Physical Human-Robot Interaction., Branden Shay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the development of robotics becomes ever increasingly present in our society, the need for studying how humans and robots interact with each other becomes more of a necessity to be properly integrated in the changing world around us. In this thesis, we undertake the study and development of how to create a tactile human-robot operator interface to guide a robot perform a physical task. The implementation of tactile interfaces such as SkinCell sensor arrays emulating skin, and of a robotic handlebar fitted with tactile sensors are critical examples of the challenges that come with mounting and packaging such sensors …

Investigating The Contribution Of First-Order Streams To Floods In Downstream Water Bodies On The Central Appalachian Plateau., Luke Ott Dec 2024

Investigating The Contribution Of First-Order Streams To Floods In Downstream Water Bodies On The Central Appalachian Plateau., Luke Ott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Flash floods are the costliest natural disaster in Appalachia. The goal of this study is to better understand flood response in headwater streams and the role of these systems in the generation of downstream floods. We applied a process-based hydrologic model using data from the Robinson Forest environmental monitoring network to estimate the contribution of headwaters to downstream floods. We then used the model to understand the effects of landscape disturbance in headwaters on downstream floods. Finally, we developed empirical hydrologic models to identify useful data for predicting downstream peak flood discharge. Results indicate that headwaters in our study catchment …
