This qualitative case study explores the factors motivating mid-career (4–15 years) in New York City (NYC) to stay in the profession beyond the novice years (1–3 years), as well as the challenges they face. Utilizing self-determination theory and language ideologies as theoretical frameworks, this study captures the motivating factors and challenges of 15 mid-career bilingual teachers across NYC. Findings indicated that relationships with students and colleagues, professional growth, supportive administrators, and alignment between language ideologies and program structures served as motivating factors to remain in the profession by reinforcing teachers’ sense of relatedness, competence, and autonomy. In the United States, persistent inequities in schooling have intensified the need for asset-based  frameworks, such as culturally sustaining pedagogies (CSP), to support students from  communities that have been historically racialized and minoritized. At the same time, growing  political and social resistance to practices of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) has created  barriers for schools and teachers seeking to implement culturally responsive approaches to  teaching and learning. Using narrative inquiry, this dissertation explores the stories of three culturally  sustaining teachers of color to understand how they enact resistance and pursue social  transformation in their classrooms and schools. Centering Well-Being And Wholeness: Exploring Racial Battle Fatigue Among Black 3-K To Twelfth-Grade Teachers, Olubunmi Fashusi

This qualitative case study, with some descriptive statistics, examined Black 3-K through 12th- grade teachers’ experiences with racial battle fatigue (RBF), the psychological and behavioral stress responses they perceived most accurately convey how RBF manifests for them, and the strategies they used to disrupt RBF’s impact. Participants experienced compounded RBF due to advocating for students (i.e., speaking out, supporting, or intervening). Participants’ most perceived psychological stress response to RBF was racism awareness, and most perceived behavioral stress response was spirituality or religion. Objective To evaluate the performance of the point-of-care i-STAT device for creatinine measurement in Ugandan children with sickle cell anemia (SCA), and to determine the clinical impact of hydroxyurea-associated assay interference.

Results description This secondary analysis was nested within a randomized clinical trial involving 248 Ugandan children with SCA. The mean age at enrollment was 32 months, and 115/248 (46.2%) initiated hydroxyurea during 12 months of follow-up as part of routine clinical care. At enrollment, creatinine values measured by i-STAT and reference laboratory testing were clinically comparable. At follow-up, children receiving hydroxyurea had significantly higher creatinine values measured by iSTAT …

Climate change increasingly threatens agricultural productivity, food security, and rural livelihoods, with significant impacts in regions experiencing environmental and socio-economic vulnerabilities. While technological innovations are central to advancing climate-resilient agriculture, locally embedded knowledge systems are equally critical for enabling adaptive and sustainable food systems. This study examines how land-based learning (LBL) contributes to climate resilience through intergenerational knowledge transfer and context-specific adaptation practices. The study employed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, with a systematic literature search conducted across major scientific databases, i.e., Scopus and Web of Science using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Current fire design for wood framed buildings assumes a protective layer of charring and the material beyond that layer is entirely undamaged after the fire. It is documented that wood does experience a loss of ultimate capacity during a fire, however, the bulk of tests providing the reduction in capacity have been in tensile and compressive tests. The tests described in this paper were conducted to investigate the reduction in bending strengths both during and after being raised to pre-pyrolytic temperatures. Connecting with students is an essential component of an effective English Language Arts classroom. Additionally, establishing a sense of self can be a tremendous asset for student achievement in the classroom. Intentional activities and curricular choices can have positive impacts on both connections and student self-awareness. Literature selections should reflect student populations as part of culturally sustaining pedagogies. The narrative structure of the Hero’s Journey, first elaborated by Joseph Campbell in 1949, is employed in Pashmina by Nidhi Chanani and Patron Saints of Nothing by Randy Ribay. In these two works for young people, the protagonists travel to their parents’ native countries, encountering systems of oppression that fundamentally transform their perspectives and alter the trajectories of their lives. Each character follows the same narrative pattern: before the Hero’s Journey, they have led mostly unremarkable lives, have an encounter with the supernatural or the divine, confront systemic oppression in their parents’ native countries on a scale beyond what they …

Using Poetry To Help Young Adults Cope With Mental Health Challenges, Erin Seeley

This manuscript explores the use of poetry to support young adults in coping with mental health challenges, including anxiety, grief, and trauma. Drawing on real classroom experiences and examples from young adult literature in verse, this paper illustrates how poetry can provide students with a safe outlet for self-expression, emotional processing, and connection to others. Works by Elizabeth Acevedo, Thanhha Lai, and Benedetti are examined to demonstrate how poetry fosters belonging, resilience, and hope. Implications for educators highlight the role of literature in promoting social-emotional learning and mental health awareness in the classroom.
