The Affective Milieu Of School Market Competition: Using Affect And Governmentality To Study Market Competition, Brad Gobby, Amanda Keddie, Jill Blackmore, Katrina Macdonald
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This paper integrates insights from affect theory into Foucault’s governmentality framework to analyse school markets. Using a Deleuzian approach to affect, we theorise school markets as an affective milieu that composes the field of competition. Drawing on interviews with staff at two rival high schools, we highlight how an affective milieu that included threat, anxiety, insecurity, resentment and confidence shaped market dynamics. Our analysis shows that affective milieus reflect and reinforce power asymmetries in local school markets and are a condition for generating competitive practices to enhance schools’ capacities to affect and be affected. Our central point is to move …
The Key Role Of Feedback In Institutional Readiness For Programmatic Assessment, Michelle Pedlow, David Boud
The Key Role Of Feedback In Institutional Readiness For Programmatic Assessment, Michelle Pedlow, David Boud
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Programmatic assessment for learning represents a shift from fragmented, summative assessment practices to integrated, developmental systems where feedback is central to learning. This paper argues that feedback is foundational to programmatic assessment (PAx) implementation. Using feedback as an analytical lens, it examines institutional readiness for the deep structural and cultural shifts that PAx requires, drawing on a qualitative case study of course coordinators across three disciplines at an Australian university. Five interrelated barriers were identified: fragmented feedback, summative assessment reliance, workload constraints, absence of coordinated feedback pathways, and unconstrained educator autonomy. These reflect structural and cultural misalignments with PAx principles. …

The Strengthening Mechanisms And Incipient Plasticity Of Additively Manufactured Biomedical Refractory High Entropy Alloys, Changxi Liu, Liqiang Wang, Miao Luo, Kuaishe Wang, Marco De Battista, Ling Zhang, Weijie Lu, Lai Chang Zhang, Di Zhang
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Owing to the cellular structure that limits dislocation motion upon stress loading, additively manufactured (AM) refractory high-entropy alloys (HEAs) exhibit an excellent strength-plasticity synergy. This work integrates micro/nano-mechanical experiments with statistical physics modeling to examine dislocation nucleation and slip in AM-fabricated TiNbTaZrMo HEA. Computational results indicated that the activation volume for initial dislocation nucleation is about one atomic volume, facilitating dislocation initiation. Nanoindentation and in-situ micro-pillar compression reveal no significant pop-in events, indicating that the cellular structure impedes dislocation slip and thus prevents plasticity reduction from dislocation slipping near grain boundaries. This work provides a thorough investigation into the interplay …

The marine soundscape, whether in coastal areas or the deepest ocean, in the tropics or at the poles, contains a myriad of sounds. Sounds may be grouped by their origin into geophony (e.g., wind, precipitation, waves, earthquakes, volcanoes, and ice), biophony (e.g., invertebrates, fishes, and marine mammals), and anthropophony (e.g., port construction, mineral and hydrocarbon exploration and production, renewable energy installation, and shipping). This chapter gives a brief overview of the geophony and biophony, and then focuses on the anthropophony. The sounds of boats and ships of various types, marine seismic surveys, drilling, dredging, pile driving, windfarms, geotechnical site investigations, …

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Students’ Ict Skills For Online Assessments (Naplan): Influences And Impact, Cindy Carboni, Susan Main
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This convergent mixed-methods study investigated Australian teachers’ perspectives on the computing competencies required for online National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). A total of 107 teachers completed surveys examining how socio-educational backgrounds and classroom practices shape students’ readiness for high-stakes online assessments. Quantitative analysis revealed significant associations between socio-educational advantage and students’ proficiency in seven essential NAPLAN ICT online skills, including typing, navigation, and on-screen manipulation. Qualitative findings highlighted teachers’ concerns about limited exposure to computing tools and insufficient practice time, which many believed hindered student performance in online assessments. Teachers also noted that inequities in skill development …
The Monstrous-Digital: Data Necropolitics, Social Media, And The Assassination Of Brian Thompson, Laura Glitsos
The Monstrous-Digital: Data Necropolitics, Social Media, And The Assassination Of Brian Thompson, Laura Glitsos
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This research article examines the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and the ensuing social media attention on the alleged shooter Luigi Mangione. I argue that the incident can be read as a cultural moment that captures the essence of an emergent sensibility that I call the “monstrous-digital” because of its layered and complex interconnections with the digital apparatus as a space of control and contestation. Specifically, I connect it to the biopolitical weaponization of computational systems, McQuillan’s (2015) algorithmic states of exception, and Pele and Mulholland’s (2023) data necropolitics. I approach this research using a qualitative case study method, …
The Relationship Of Parent Iep Meeting Attendance On African American And Hispanic Middle School Students’ Attendance And Behavior, David W. Johnny
The Relationship Of Parent Iep Meeting Attendance On African American And Hispanic Middle School Students’ Attendance And Behavior, David W. Johnny
Theses and Dissertations
This applied dissertation investigated whether there was a significant difference in behavioral and attendance outcomes among African American and Hispanic middle school students with disabilities, depending on parental attendance at Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings. The study was grounded in Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler’s parent involvement theory. This quantitative study used archival data from a southeastern U.S. middle school to examine whether variations in parental participation corresponded with students' disciplinary incidents and school absences.
The study included 96 students in grades 6–8 whose IEP attendance, behavior referrals, and absence data were analyzed. Independent samples t-tests were conducted to determine if statistically …
Parent Social Validity Ratings Of Receiving Functional Communication Training, Shani Davies
Parent Social Validity Ratings Of Receiving Functional Communication Training, Shani Davies
Theses and Dissertations
This applied dissertation was designed to provide greater insight on parent and caregiver views and perceptions on participating in functional communication training. While extensive research exists regarding the effectiveness of functional communication training and parent training in general for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, evidence on the social validity with respect to caregivers is lacking.
The researcher utilized evidenced-based social validity scales to explore parent/caregiver perceptions of receiving caregiver functional communication training, their perceived effectiveness of the treatment modality, and overall acceptance of the approach.
An analysis of the data revealed that parents’ overall perception was neutral regarding general views …
A Policy Analysis Of Performance Based Funding In Colorado, Nicholas G. Dix
A Policy Analysis Of Performance Based Funding In Colorado, Nicholas G. Dix
Theses and Dissertations
The researcher used a quantitative approach to examine the effects of performance-based funding policies in Colorado. Specifically, the researcher focused on postsecondary access for Pell-grant eligible and underrepresented minority students. Using a doubly robust difference-in-differences design, the study compares two PBF policy iterations (2.0 and 3.0) to assess the effectiveness of those polices on public four-year degree granting universities in Colorado. The researcher assessed from the data that PBF has no significant impact on Pell-eligible postsecondary accessibility, but PBF has a slightly significant impact on URM accessibility.
The research is grounded in institutional theory and resource dependence theory. The research …
