Staff and student participants highlighted key elements of the SLP, including the types of community involvement encouraged within the program, and provided insight into how the …

Drawing Sound In Space: Digital Spatial Notation As Constitutive Audiovisuality, Cat Hope Jan 2025

Drawing Sound In Space: Digital Spatial Notation As Constitutive Audiovisuality, Cat Hope

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This paper examines how the design and realisation of a concert presentation entitled Drawing Sound in Space led to the concept of digital spatial notation. Seven Australian composers were commissioned to create digital scores for an electroacoustic chamber music ensemble, and scores were shared with the audience. The author argues that contemporary digital notation practices enhance live performances of new music by expanding concepts of the audiovisual to include alternative notational approaches engaging with space, creating a ‘spatial notation’. Further, Drawing Sound in Space aimed to transform musicianship and audience experience by offering a more immersive encounter with music notation …

The Dark Side Of International Cooperation: Indifference And The Psychosocial Dynamics Of Cooperative Deterrence, Jamal Barnes Jan 2025

The Dark Side Of International Cooperation: Indifference And The Psychosocial Dynamics Of Cooperative Deterrence, Jamal Barnes

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

States are increasingly resorting to international cooperative agreements to deter migrants and refugees from irregularly arriving at their borders. Although scholars have shown how these cooperative deterrence policies are undermining important refugee and human rights protections, making migration journeys more dangerous, and securitizing and criminalizing people on the move, what has not been adequately examined is how these cooperative arrangements can bring about normative changes that produce indifference to the suffering of refugees and migrants. This article examines the psychosocial dynamics of cooperative deterrence policies to show how the social processes of authorization, routinization, evasion of responsibility, and dehumanization weaken …

Determinants Of Short Interpregnancy Intervals In High-Income Countries: A Systematic Review, J. Dunne, D. Foo, J. Jancey, G. Pereira, B. Kefale, D. G. Belay, G. Dhamrait, A. T. Gebremedhin, K. B. Mruts, S. D. Nyadanu, A. Roy, G. A. Tessema

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Short interpregnancy intervals (IPIs) of <6–18 months are associated with adverse maternal and child outcomes. This study aimed to identify the individual, relationship, community, and societal factors that influence short IPIs in high-income countries. A comprehensive search was undertaken in CINAHL Plus, Ovid/EMBASE, Ovid/MEDLINE, Ovid/PsycINFO, ProQuest, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for articles published in English from 1st January 1990 to 26th October 2023. Studies were included if they reported an effect estimate of at least one determinant of pregnancy spacing in a high-income country. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Johanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tool and Cochrane Risk Assessment Tool. Multi-level factors at the individual, relationship, community, and societal level were systematically identified through the socio-ecological model. This study is registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020176311). Of 2005 unique articles, 220 were identified for full-text review, and 55 met the inclusion criteria representing a total of 27,103,055 women from 13 high-income countries. All the included studies were deemed to be of moderate to high quality. Most of the studies reported determinants of short IPI at the individual level, with non-use of contraception the most common reported factor. Peer influence was a factor at the relationship level, and access to health care and reproductive services were impactful at the community and societal levels, respectively. Future research and efforts should support the development and implementation of policies and practices that support optimum pregnancy spacing from a comprehensive socio-ecological position.

Laissez-Faire Leadership, Red Tape And The Meaningful Work Paradox, Abid Hussain, Esme Franken

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

While meaningful work is widely recognised as a driver of job satisfaction, the role of leadership style and bureaucratic constraints in shaping this relationship remains underexplored. This study addresses this gap by investigating how laissez-faire leadership and red tape moderate the meaningful work–job satisfaction relationship among Australian public sector employees (N = 277). The findings reveal that laissez-faire leadership strengthens this relationship, suggesting that the autonomy it provides enhances the benefits of meaningful work, contrary to its traditionally negative portrayal. In contrast, red tape significantly weakens the relationship, highlighting the adverse effects of bureaucratic inefficiencies. These results confirm that meaningful …

The Affective Milieu Of School Market Competition: Using Affect And Governmentality To Study Market Competition, Brad Gobby, Amanda Keddie, Jill Blackmore, Katrina Macdonald Jan 2025

The Affective Milieu Of School Market Competition: Using Affect And Governmentality To Study Market Competition, Brad Gobby, Amanda Keddie, Jill Blackmore, Katrina Macdonald

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This paper integrates insights from affect theory into Foucault’s governmentality framework to analyse school markets. Using a Deleuzian approach to affect, we theorise school markets as an affective milieu that composes the field of competition. Drawing on interviews with staff at two rival high schools, we highlight how an affective milieu that included threat, anxiety, insecurity, resentment and confidence shaped market dynamics. Our analysis shows that affective milieus reflect and reinforce power asymmetries in local school markets and are a condition for generating competitive practices to enhance schools’ capacities to affect and be affected. Our central point is to move …
