Understanding Pii Leakage In Large Language Models: A Systematic Survey, Shuai Cheng, Zhao Li, Shu Meng, Mengxia Ren, Haitao Xu, Shuai Hao, Chuan Yue, Fang Zhang
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated exceptional success across a variety of tasks, particularly in natural language processing, leading to their growing integration into numerous facets of daily life. However, this widespread deployment has raised substantial privacy concerns, especially regarding personally identifiable information (PII), which can be directly associated with specific individuals. The leakage of such information presents significant real-world privacy threats. In this paper, we conduct a systematic investigation into existing research on PII leakage in LLMs, encompassing commonly utilized PII datasets, evaluation metrics, and current studies on both PII leakage attacks and defensive strategies. Finally, we identify unresolved …

Exploring Relationships Among Higher Education Accreditation Outcomes, Credit Ratings, And Subsequent Institutional Responses: A Quantitative Study, Joshua Allen Hertlein
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation examines the financial pressures facing colleges and universities, focusing on the impact of accreditation outcomes and bond credit ratings. Utilizing a quantitative approach, the study posits that adverse accreditation outcomes and credit rating downgrades can be anticipated by observable, measurable attributes at higher education institutions. Additionally, it explores institutional responses following these adverse events.
Data was collected from IPEDS, FSA, DAPIP, BLS, and Moody’s Investors Service, covering the period from 2012 to 2022. Logistic regression models estimated the odds of negative accreditation outcomes and credit rating downgrades based on predictor variables such as enrollment levels, expenses, revenue, financial …

ABSTRACT
Closing racial and ethnic disparity gaps in pediatric asthma follow up care - A quality improvement initiative
Ayodele Ayeko
Introduction/Background: Inadequate management of asthma significantly contributes to poor asthma control, poor quality of life (QOL), and high hospitalization rates among pediatric patients. The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines offer recommendations designed to enhance asthma control and improve the quality of life for those affected (2015), including recommendations for close follow up care. At WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital (WVUMCH), insufficient asthma control has been associated with lower clinic follow-up rates and an increase in hospitalization. Although educational initiatives …

Reclaiming Revolutionary Relics: How Nineteenth-Century Americans Used George Washington’S Objects To Understand The Civil War, Abbi E. Smithmyer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
By combining cultural, memory, and material culture studies, this dissertation examines the ways objects associated with George Washington became instruments within the proxy war over whether the United States or the Confederacy best represented the American Revolutionary era’s principal values of liberty and equality. Exploring monuments, statues, historic homes, relics, and mementoes, as well as antebellum speeches and schoolbooks, letters, diaries, military orders, newspapers, and memoirs, this work demonstrates how the relics linked to Washington and the nation’s founding shaped how the Civil War generation thought about America’s past.
The 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States has …

An Edna Assessment Of The Diamond Darter (Crystallaria Cincotta) In Its Current And Historic Distribution Range, Cameron Moore Layne
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Environmental DNA (eDNA) can serve as a useful monitoring tool for cryptic and imperiled freshwater stream fishes. eDNA can fill knowledge gaps regarding species’ distribution, site abundance, and habitat usage. The last known stronghold of the Diamond Darter (Crystallaria cincotta) in the Elk River of West Virginia provides an excellent test case to examine the utility of this non-invasive method of surveying rare species. Diamond Darters are one of the most newly recognized freshwater fishes in North America and are among the most imperiled U.S. fishes, having been federally listed as endangered in 2013. The cryptic behavior and limitations of …

The Effect Of Sars-Cov-2 On Bacterial Diversity And Abundance In Community Wastewater, Joshua Lambert
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) enters human respiratory cells through binding of its spike (S) protein to the ACE-2 receptor, which is highly expressed in lung cells, but is also found in over 150 other cell types encompassing major organs including GI enterocytes. SARS-CoV-2 causes gut dysbiosis in infected individuals and patients with COVID-19 and also coincides with lower alpha diversity of the individual’s gut microbiome. Certain gut microbiome-associated genera are lower in abundance in COVID-19 patients including Lachnospira, Prevetolla, Roseburia, Bifidobacterium, and Faecalibacterium while genera such as Bacteroides, Enterococcus and Proteobacteria are increased during a SARS-CoV-2 …
Sleep, Endocannabinoid Signaling, And Cortical Processing In Mouse Models Of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Bryan Rodriguez
Sleep, Endocannabinoid Signaling, And Cortical Processing In Mouse Models Of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Bryan Rodriguez
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Sleep plays a crucial role in memory consolidation, neuronal plasticity, and cognitive function. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often experience sleep disturbances, which are positively correlated with symptom severity. However, on the surface, sleep architecture is remarkably normal under baseline conditions in many rodent models of ASD. The goals if this dissertation were to investigate whether regulation of sleep, biochemical signaling during sleep, and downstream consequences of sleep on behavior are altered in two mouse models of ASD. In Aim 1, we tested the hypothesis that sleep phenotypes emerge in ASD models under conditions of high sleep pressure. We …
A Strategic Infrastructure Improvement Framework For Intermodal Transportation Networks, Ayoub Abusalih
A Strategic Infrastructure Improvement Framework For Intermodal Transportation Networks, Ayoub Abusalih
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this research, we propose a novel approach to design infrastructure networks for intermodal freight transportation systems, which incorporates railways, highways, and inland waterways (IWW). The objective of our study is to identify the optimal set of hubs to be built and operated over an extended time, based on the projected domestic cargo demand. Unlike traditional hub location models, our approach introduces hybrid hubs, where hybrid transportation modes are integrated to facilitate cargo handling. This innovative integration enables more efficient intermodal connections, leading to tangible reductions in operating costs, and carbon emissions. Specifically, we propose a mixed integer programming model …

The Stochastic Occupation Kernel (Sock) Method For Learning Stochastic Differential Equations, M. L. Wells, Kamel Lahouel, Bruno Jedynak
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We present a novel kernel-based method for learning multivariate stochastic differential equations (SDEs). The method follows a two-step procedure: we first estimate the drift term function, then the (matrix-valued) diffusion function given the drift. Occupation kernels are integral functionals on a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) that aggregate information over a trajectory. Our approach leverages vector-valued occupation kernels for estimating the drift component of the stochastic process. For diffusion estimation, we extend this framework by introducing operator-valued occupation kernels, enabling the estimation of an auxiliary matrix-valued function as a positive semi-definite operator, from which we readily derive the diffusion estimate. …

Learning a nonparametric system of ordinary differential equations from trajectories in a -dimensional state space requires learning functions of variables. Explicit formulations often scale quadratically in unless additional knowledge about system properties, such as sparsity and symmetries, is available. In this work, we propose a linear approach, the multivariate occupation kernel method (MOCK), using the implicit formulation provided by vector-valued reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. The solution for the vector field relies on multivariate occupation kernel functions associated with the trajectories and scales linearly with the dimension of the state space. We validate through experiments on a variety of simulated and …

Medical image harmonization aims to reduce the differences in appearance caused by scanner hardware variations to allow for consistent and reliable comparisons across devices. Harmonization based on paired images from different devices has limited applicability in real-world clinical settings. On the other hand, unpaired harmonization typically does not guarantee anatomy consistency, which is problematic because anatomical information preservation is paramount. The Schrödinger bridge framework has achieved state-of-the-art style transfer performance with natural images by matching distributions of unpaired images, but this approach can also introduce anatomy changes when applied to medical images. We show that such changes occur because the …

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) images are often acquired as highly anisotropic volumes, where the scanning step is dense along the fast axis but sparse along the slow axis. This affects image analysis, such as image registration for longitudinal alignment. To create more isotropic volumes, bicubic interpolation can be used along the slow axis, but it generally produces blurry features. Registration-based interpolation can reduce blurriness, but often fails to generate realistic OCT images. Deep generative models can sample realistic images, but lack the structural consistency constraints required for interpolation. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised image interpolation method that combines …

Founders, employees, consumers, and even funders increasingly expect businesses to pursue social goals alongside financial performance. Yet even the most committed firms have found it difficult to maintain social performance over time. Scholars in economics, management, and law have put forth several explanations for this “mission drift,” including inappropriate governance, poor management, lack of genuine commitment, and threat of takeovers. Puzzlingly, research to date primarily focuses on later-stage firms, even though the events and decisions that take place in a firm’s early stages can critically impact retention of its social performance.
Drawing from over five years of qualitative field research …

Recent Changes In Discretionary Denials Of Drug Patent Challenges, S. Sean Tu, Arti K. Rai, Aaron S. Kesselheim
Faculty Scholarship
Recent policy shifts at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) have sharply limited the use of two administrative pathways for patent reviews, inter partes review (IPR) and post-grant review (PGR). Congress created these administrative pathways to provide a faster and less costly way to challenge weak patents. Recently, the USPTO has expanded the use of “discretionary denials,” invoking a new “settled expectations” rationale that blocks IPR petitions for patents more than about six years old. From May to September 2025, 60% of 506 requests for discretionary denial were granted, triple historical levels, including one-third involving drug patents. These changes …

The Reliability Response To Patent Law’S Ai Challenges, Arti K. Rai

Pervasive AI use adds newfound importance to longstanding debates over patent timing and reliability. Patent claims on speculative ideas generated by AI, or even the infusion of speculative AI-generated ideas into the public domain, may defeat patent incentives for more careful research. Although challenges that AI use poses for patent validity requirements like human inventorship and nonobviousness have received more attention, reliability is equally important.
Indeed, as this Article argues, the issues are linked. If requirements for inventorship and nonobviousness were adjusted to emphasize reliability, a human role could be preserved, and AI use would not necessarily threaten patents. Currently, …

Technologies Of Violence: Law, Markets, And Innovation For Gun Safety, Joseph Blocher, Christopher Buccafusco
Technologies Of Violence: Law, Markets, And Innovation For Gun Safety, Joseph Blocher, Christopher Buccafusco
Faculty Scholarship
Violence in the United States is distinctive in many ways, perhaps none more visceral and fundamental than the technologies with which it is practiced. American violence disproportionately involves guns, and because guns are such an effective tool of violence, confrontations involving them are disproportionately deadly. Decades of research confirm this "instrumentality effect, " and it is reflected in the broad, bipartisan agreement that the nation has a gun violence problem. The deep disagreement, of course, remains about how to address it, with most of the debate focused on regulating who can carry which guns, where, and how.
But fully understanding, …

Article III of the Constitution confines the “judicial Power of the United States” to the adjudication of “cases” and “controversies.” In practice, however, federal judges exercise control over, and spend their scarce time on, a wide range of activities that traverse far beyond any individual adjudication. Typically classified as a form of “judicial administration,” these activities span everything from promulgating the rules of the various federal courts to overseeing federal pretrial detention services or choosing federal public defenders.
This Article describes how judges became involved in these nonadjudicatory Article III activities, clarifies the activities’ relationship to Article III adjudication, and …

Citators, digests, annotated codes. These standard legal research tools, developed by generations of lawyers and now adapted for the online era, tend to be the province of litigators. Transactional lawyers may also occasionally use these tools, but for the practitioner making and documenting commercial, corporate, real estate, or securities deals, legal forms are often a more useful tool. Used judiciously, these sample documents make drafting more efficient, guide junior business lawyers through unfamiliar transactions, and help identify legal issues to be researched.
For today’s dealmakers, online transactional forms are essential research and drafting tools in their own right, but examining …

Each day, the news brings stories of military attacks on schools, hospitals, apartment buildings, electrical facilities, and other critical civilian infrastructure. The militaries attacking these objects often seek to justify the attacks by claiming that the civilian objects are being used by militants. Objects that are believed to have both military and civilian use are often referred to as “dual-use” objects. Even though the term has become common, international law does not recognize a “dual-use” object as a legally meaningful category. Rather, the postwar Geneva Conventions that lie at the core of modern international humanitarian law establish a bright line …

The empirical study of shareholder litigation in state courts is a seriously underexamined subject. To remedy this gap, we collected data on all 4,741 fiduciary duty complaints filed in the Delaware Court of Chancery over a sixteen-year period, from January 1, 2004, to December 31, 2019. After removing the duplicative cases consolidated into a lead complaint, the number of unique complaints was reduced to 2,958 in our dataset. In our coding, we examined over one hundred variables (with many variables being further subdivided into as many as eight subvariables) for each of these cases, including information about the parties, claims, …

This article presents the case for reconsidering the rules governing withdrawals from human rights treaties that permit unilateral exit. Once a rarity, such withdrawals have been on the rise across the globe. We propose a process-based approach to address this trend. The heart of our proposal focuses on sequenced domestic and international processes to publicise and scrutinise the nearly unfettered authority of executive branch officials to exit from such human rights treaties. This approach requires that national executives explain and justify a decision to withdraw, which can then be evaluated by a wide range of domestic and international actors. Drawing …

Legal scholarship is overly abstract and theoretical, making it unhelpful to judges and lawyers. That, at least, is the classic critique from the bench. When it comes to the Second Amendment, however, a different pattern has emerged: judges consistently cite law review articles and look to the academy for guidance. Most recently, in United States v. Rahimi, some Justices went further, implicitly inviting more scholarly work to help the Court answer open questions raised by its novel methodological approach to the Second Amendment. This Article explores this aberrant trend.

Solar radiation modification (SRM) presents important challenges to risk regulation and governance, arising from the array of multiple risks that SRM may influence. SRM would not simply reverse climate change, but could pose further ancillary impacts, depending on the method of SRM, such as stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI), marine cloud brightening (MCB), or a space-based planetary sunshade system (PSS). We identify multiple risks that SRM may influence, both biophysical and sociopolitical, to be compared to the multiple risks that may be affected by greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation and climate adaptation. This multi-risk framework helps analysts and decision makers identify, evaluate, …

Trade secret law is meant to encourage socially beneficial behaviors by permitting firms to protect their investments in the creation of valuable information. In theory, the ability to protect valuable information will make firms more likely to create that information in the first instance. But the law can also be used to shield socially harmful behaviors from public oversight. Firms can assert trade secret protection to prevent journalists, watchdogs, and criminal defendants from learning whether they are engaged in dangerous, wrongful, or biased activity. Ideally, trade secret law should sort socially beneficial uses from socially harmful ones, permitting only the …
