Harnessing The Power Of Community Through Pop-Up Legal Clinics, Elizabeth Grant, Christine M. Scartz
Scholarly Works
The article discusses the effectiveness of pop-up legal clinics in addressing the justice gap by providing free legal advice to those in need. These clinics, operating under Georgia's Rule of Professional Conduct 6.5, offer limited scope consultations, enabling attorneys to fulfill their pro bono obligations while helping individuals navigate legal issues. The initiative underscores the power of community collaboration and highlights the positive impact on both clients and volunteer attorneys.
Values-Ambiguous Clinics, Willow Tracy
Values-Ambiguous Clinics, Willow Tracy

As law school clinical programs have grown in recent decades, many of the newer offerings focus on business law, entrepreneurship, intellectualproperty, and technology. It is commonly presumed that social justice values, such as the amelioration ofpoverty or theprotection offundamental rights, are notfoundational goals of these non-traditional clinics. This Article calls these clinics "values-ambiguous" to highlight the frequent uncertainty and skepticism about their relationship to traditional clinical social justice values. Importantly, "values-ambiguous"does not describe a quality of the clinic itself it describes a quality ofperception of the clinic. In other words, "values-ambiguous clinics" are clinics that are typically not perceived as …

In this research letter, we examine whether gender and racial bias affect interruption rates at one of the most visible events in American politics: US Supreme Court confirmation hearings. Using original data from 1939 to 2022, we find that male and white participants are more likely to interrupt women and person of color speakers, respectively, relative to male and white speakers. This finding holds for both senators and nominees as interrupters. Our results provide evidence that biased interruptive behavior occurs in even the most public and salient of political settings and that it can be mitigated (or intensified) by shared …
Transunion, Vermont Agency, And Statutory Damages Under Article Iii, Randy Beck
Transunion, Vermont Agency, And Statutory Damages Under Article Iii, Randy Beck

The Supreme Court concluded in TransUnion LLC v. Ramirez that a plaintiff may not sue to collect statutory damages under a statute like the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) simply because the defendant violated a right Congress conferred on the plaintiff. Instead, Article III requires the plaintiff to show that the statutory violation resulted in a “concrete” injury with “a ‘close relationship’ to a harm ‘traditionally’ recognized as providing a basis for a lawsuit in American courts.” The TransUnion Court made no effort to explain how its conclusion could be reconciled with Vermont Agency of Natural Resources v. United States …

Presidential power is vast, both under law and in practice. Who holds presidents accountable, and by what means? Courts wrestle with these intertwined questions of power and accountability. The majority opinion in the 2024 presidential immunity case, Trump v. United States, is eerily resonant, rhetorically, with a notorious judgment enhancing one person’s power over others by shielding that power utterly from criminal-law accountability. That judgment, from 1829, is Judge Thomas Ruffin’s infamous slavery-law opinion for the North Carolina Supreme Court in State v. Mann. I juxtapose the two opinions, which share jarringly similar claims about the nature of power, rule, …
International Arbitration And Conflicts Of Law: Three Hard Questions For Symeon, Peter B. Rutledge
International Arbitration And Conflicts Of Law: Three Hard Questions For Symeon, Peter B. Rutledge
Scholarly Works
The presence of a foreign element in a legal relationship inevitably introduces intricate choice-of-law issues. This postulate holds especially true in the context of international arbitration. Arbitration involves an exceptional degree of procedural freedom (including over the choice of the applicable law) and a distinctive conflict-of-laws regime that may be unbound from a particular national legal system. This article examines several choice-of-law issues arising in the context of international arbitration. In particular, Section I of this article addresses whether the United Nations Convention on Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards, otherwise known as the New York Convention, is selfexecuting …

Copyright Doctrine Before The Tribunal Of Science: A Response To Professor Silbey, Mateusz Blaszczyk
Scholarly Works
In an important new Article, titled A Matter of Facts: The Evolution of the Copyright Fact-Exclusion and Its Implications for Disinformation and Democracy, Professor Jessica Silbey argues provocatively that we “‘only” know that facts are excluded from copyright protection because Feist Publications v. Rural Telephone Service “says so.” She argues that both the nature and importance of facts has been underdefined and is in flux, nonetheless tracing it to the foundational cases of United States (U.S.) copyright law, and argues for a stronger exclusion of facts, which are publici juris, and belong in the public domain. This central …
Green Dividends: A Case Study In Green Dividends And The Conditions For Private Ordering Solutions, Anne M. Tucker
Green Dividends: A Case Study In Green Dividends And The Conditions For Private Ordering Solutions, Anne M. Tucker
Scholarly Works
This Essay introduces a novel private ordering solution to facilitate corporate investments in pro-social and environmental initiatives: Green dividends. Green dividends are an optional increase in shareholder dividends that are returned to the company to be reinvested in environmental initiatives or kept by a shareholder. Green dividends pose an alternative to the current gridlocked debate that corporations can’t, won’t, shouldn’t, and shouldn’t even try to act in pro-social or environmental ways. Turning the common refrains on their head converts each narrative into an element for a successful private ordering solution: authority, accountability, shareholder buy-in, and government-backed enforcement. With Green dividends, …

Is The Light Triad Really That Light?: The Light Triad's Role In Relationship Savior Complex, Skylar Robinson, Gary Lewandowski
Is The Light Triad Really That Light?: The Light Triad's Role In Relationship Savior Complex, Skylar Robinson, Gary Lewandowski
Modern Psychological Studies
Light triad traits, such as optimism, empathy, and compassion, are theorized to be three main components of a prosocial and compassionate orientation. However, in romantic relationships, those qualities may encourage a “savior complex” in which one partner attempts to help, fix, or change their partner’s less ideal components. To study this, 106 participants ranging in age from 18 to 24 years old were surveyed about their light triad traits, helping/savior complex behavior, confidence as a romantic partner (i.e., self-efficacy), closeness with their partner (i.e., inclusion of other in the self), and perceived responsiveness toward their partner. As hypothesized, those who …

Pathways To Lgbtq+ Self-Acceptance: A Qualitative Study Of Religious, Spiritual, And Mystical Experiences, Makayla Hall, Ruth Walker
Modern Psychological Studies
For the LGBTQ+ community, self-acceptance often involves embracing one’s identity while confronting internalized stigma, hardships, and religious or societal pressures (Lassiter et al., 2019; Schuck & Liddle, 2001; Stern & Wright, 2017). Prior researchers have highlighted both positive and negative effects of religious and spiritual beliefs for LGBTQ+ individuals, with spirituality often fostering resilience and social support (Lassiter et al., 2019) and religious institutions sometimes contributing to feelings of alienation (Schuck & Liddle, 2001). The purpose of this study was to explore how religious, spiritual, and mystical experiences influence self-acceptance in LGBTQ+ adults. We used reflexive thematic analysis to explore …
Kelley’S Paradox And Strength Skewness In Research On Unconscious Mental Processes, Daryl Lee, Christopher Berry, David R. Shanks
Kelley’S Paradox And Strength Skewness In Research On Unconscious Mental Processes, Daryl Lee, Christopher Berry, David R. Shanks
School of Psychology
A widely adopted approach in research on unconscious perception and cognition involves contrasting behavioral or neural responses to stimuli that have been presented to participants (e.g., old items in a memory test) against those that have not (e.g., new items), and which participants do not discriminate in their conscious reports. We demonstrate that such contrasts do not license inferences about unconscious processing, for two reasons. One is Kelley’s Paradox, a statistical phenomenon caused by regression to the mean. In the inevitable presence of measurement error, true awareness of the contrasted stimuli is not equal. The second is a consequence, within …

The rapid growth of diverse -omics datasets has made multiomics data integration crucial in cancer research. This study adapts the expectation–maximization routine for the joint latent variable modeling of multiomics patient profiles. By combining this approach with traditional biological feature selection methods, this study optimizes latent distribution, enabling efficient patient clustering from well-studied cancer types with reduced computational expense. The proposed optimization subroutines enhance survival analysis and improve runtime performance. This article presents a framework for distinguishing cancer subtypes and identifying potential biomarkers for breast cancer. Key insights into individual subtype expression and function were obtained through differentially expressed gene …

Few-Shot Class-Incremental Learning (FSCIL) aims to enable deep neural networks to incrementally learn new tasks from a limited number of labeled samples, while retaining knowledge of previously learned tasks, mimicking the way humans learn. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach called Prompt Learning for FSCIL (PL-FSCIL), which leverages the power of prompts alongside a pre-trained Vision Transformer (ViT) model to effectively tackle the challenges of FSCIL. Our approach explores the feasibility of directly applying visual prompts in FSCIL, using a simplified model architecture. PL-FSCIL integrates two key prompts: the Domain Prompt and the FSCIL Prompt. Both are tensors …

Research in Bengali Natural Language Processing (BNLP) is rapidly expanding. Despite being one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, BNLP research remains insufficient, particularly in Bengali speech recognition. The languages rich morphology, agglutinative structure, and diverse dialects make text and speech processing especially challenging. However, these challenges can be addressed with effective preprocessing techniques. Various organizations in Bangladesh and West Bengal are integrating Natural Language Processing (NLP) into their services, but without a thorough understanding of preprocessing, these implementations remain incomplete. Applying proper preprocessing techniques to the Bengali language will serve as a foundation for developing robust …

A Real-Time Approach To Capture Ambient And Focal Attention In Visual Search, Gavindya Jayawardena, Yasith Jayawardana, Yasasi Abeysinghe, Bhanuka Mahanama, Sampath Jayarathna, Jacek Gwizdka
Computer Science Faculty Publications
During visual search, individuals’ attention shifts between ambient and focal states in response to task demands and stimuli. The ambient/focal coefficient K is a statistically validated measure of these states, computed offline from fixation duration and saccade amplitude data. While current methods compute K offline, real-time computation could enable applications such as monitoring user attention, creating attention-adaptive user interfaces, and optimizing graphics rendering. However, real-time computation of K requires stable estimates for the parameters of fixation duration and saccade amplitude distributions. Since these distributions are heavy-tailed, the real-time estimates exhibit high variance and slow convergence. To overcome this, we propose …

P-adic analysis, introduced by Kurt Hensel in the early 20th century, has developed into a fundamental area of mathematical research with broad applications in number theory, algebraic geometry, and mathematical physics. This study aims to examine the thematic evolution and scholarly impact of p-adic research through a comprehensive topic modeling and bibliometric analysis. Using classical bibliometric techniques (e.g., performance analysis, co-authorship, and co-citation networks) combined with Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), we analyzed 7388 peer-reviewed documents published between 1965 and 2024. The computational workflow was conducted using R (version 4.4.1) and VOSviewer (version 1.6.20), which enabled the identification of 20 distinct …

Can Llms Beat Humans On Discerning Human-Written And Llm-Generated Science News, Dominik Soós, Meng Jiang, Jian Wu
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Science news is increasingly important in connecting scientists and the public by sharing discoveries and innovations. With the rise of large language models (LLMs), there is potential to automate science news creation, but concerns exist about the quality of LLM-generated news versus human-written news. This paper explores whether LLMs can outperform humans in distinguishing between human-written and LLM-generated news. Inspired by the Chain-of-Thought prompting method, we designed a simple yet effective variant called Guided Few-shot (GFS), which encodes the characteristics of news of two types with examples. Our experiments indicated that GFS with just a single example effectively boosted the …

Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated exceptional success across a variety of tasks, particularly in natural language processing, leading to their growing integration into numerous facets of daily life. However, this widespread deployment has raised substantial privacy concerns, especially regarding personally identifiable information (PII), which can be directly associated with specific individuals. The leakage of such information presents significant real-world privacy threats. In this paper, we conduct a systematic investigation into existing research on PII leakage in LLMs, encompassing commonly utilized PII datasets, evaluation metrics, and current studies on both PII leakage attacks and defensive strategies. Finally, we identify unresolved …

Closing racial and ethnic disparity gaps in pediatric asthma follow up care - A quality improvement initiative
Ayodele Ayeko
Introduction/Background: Inadequate management of asthma significantly contributes to poor asthma control, poor quality of life (QOL), and high hospitalization rates among pediatric patients. The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines offer recommendations designed to enhance asthma control and improve the quality of life for those affected (2015), including recommendations for close follow up care. At WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital (WVUMCH), insufficient asthma control has been associated with lower clinic follow-up rates and an increase in hospitalization. Although educational initiatives …

Environmental DNA (eDNA) can serve as a useful monitoring tool for cryptic and imperiled freshwater stream fishes. eDNA can fill knowledge gaps regarding species’ distribution, site abundance, and habitat usage. The last known stronghold of the Diamond Darter (Crystallaria cincotta) in the Elk River of West Virginia provides an excellent test case to examine the utility of this non-invasive method of surveying rare species. Diamond Darters are one of the most newly recognized freshwater fishes in North America and are among the most imperiled U.S. fishes, having been federally listed as endangered in 2013. The cryptic behavior and limitations of …

The Effect Of Sars-Cov-2 On Bacterial Diversity And Abundance In Community Wastewater, Joshua Lambert
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) enters human respiratory cells through binding of its spike (S) protein to the ACE-2 receptor, which is highly expressed in lung cells, but is also found in over 150 other cell types encompassing major organs including GI enterocytes. SARS-CoV-2 causes gut dysbiosis in infected individuals and patients with COVID-19 and also coincides with lower alpha diversity of the individual’s gut microbiome. Certain gut microbiome-associated genera are lower in abundance in COVID-19 patients including Lachnospira, Prevetolla, Roseburia, Bifidobacterium, and Faecalibacterium while genera such as Bacteroides, Enterococcus and Proteobacteria are increased during a SARS-CoV-2 …
