This review discusses Frederick Schauer’s The Proof: Uses of Evidence in Law, Politics, and Everything Else (2022) and contends that its primary contribution is to demonstrate how evidentiary reasoning goes beyond courts and is relevant to quotidian social and political life. Schauer argues that people and institutions depend on imperfect and probabilistic sorts of evidence in discussions of standards of proof, motivated reasoning, hearsay, expert testimony, and misinformation. The review notes his distinction between ‘soft’ and ‘hard’ motivated reasoning and his treatment of standards of evidence as falling on a continuum. From Wall Street To Main Street: The Financial–Operational Performance Link In Hospitals Across Geographies, Chulho Christopher Lee, Lan Luo, Yinfei Chen, Taylor K. Brown, Hyoun Sook Lim, Ying Chen

Economic and Business Review

This study examines the relationship between hospital financial performance and operational efficiency. Using data from the American Hospital Association (AHA), we find that profitability, debt coverage, and working capital efficiency are positively associated with hospital efficiency, while liquidity and capital structure exhibit a negative correlation. Fixed-asset efficiency, however, shows no significant impact on hospital operational efficiency. Furthermore, we find that the operational efficiency of urban hospitals is, in general, more sensitive to financial performance than that of rural hospitals. These findings provide practical insights for healthcare administrators and policymakers aiming to enhance hospital operational efficiency and promote equitable care delivery.

This study examines the connection between religiosity and earnings quality, employing accrual-based and real earnings management as key indicators. By analyzing data from 22 countries from 2020 to 2023, the study identifies a negative correlation between religiosity and earnings manipulation, suggesting that managers in more religious environments are less prone to such practices. The robustness of these results is validated through multiple methods and alternative religiosity metrics. Furthermore, the study highlights the role of legal systems in shaping this relationship, demonstrating that managers in religious nations governed by civil law are more likely to engage in earnings management. In Iraq, despite a significant increased incident of chronic illnesses and viral- related malignancies, the local overview of EBV-associated complications remains fragmented.   Background: Poor glycemic control continues to be a major concern in pediatric type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). This study has examined the sociodemographic, behavioral, and clinical factors that are associated with uncontrolled glycemia in children with T1DM.

  Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 309 patients withT1DM patients under the age of 18 years. The sample population was recruited at the diabetes outpatient departments and inpatient wards of pediatric teaching hospitals in Sulaymaniyah and Erbil. HbA1c of ≤ 7.5% was considered as good glycemic control.

Urtica dioica, commonly referred to as stinging nettle, is a medicinal plant rich in therapeutic bioactives. This study examined how different solvents—petroleum ether, chloroform, ethanol, and deionized water—with varying polarities influence the extraction and identification of phytochemicals from Urtica dioica using high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results of high-performance liquid chromatography analysis based on retention time comparison with reference standards revealed that petroleum ether and chloroform extracts contained sterols, specifically Stigmasterol and β-Sitosterol. A robust Optimized Adaptive Integral Sliding Mode Controller (OAISMC) is proposed for high-precision trajectory tracking and chattering suppression of a 3-DOF where high decoupling rigid multi-body dynamics robotic manipulator in the presence of nonlinearities, parametric uncertainties, and external disturbances. The controller is designed to overcome strong joint coupling around an integral sliding surface, which eliminates the reaching phase and ensures robustness throughout the entire operation. Players explore procedurally generated dungeons, fight pastry-themed enemies, and collect bakery-inspired items that support a flavor-elemental combat system, with each run offering unique layouts, encounters, and rewards. Built in Unity with a modular, data-driven architecture, the game uses procedural generation techniques like Binary Space Partitioning, Voronoi diagrams, and Perlin noise to create varied and replayable levels. At the center of most massive galaxies, there is a supermassive black hole with a mass millions to billions of times that of the Sun. In some of these galaxies, so-called Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), the supermassive black hole is converting the gas that falls toward it into radiation energy, creating large amounts of luminosity. AGNs are composed of the central supermassive black hole, its accretion disk, and a region just outside, composed of fast-moving ionized gas clouds called the Broad Line Region (BLR). Courts decide disputes as one branch of our government. Their authority depends not only on getting the outcome right but also on public acceptance of their authority. In a time when confidence in institutions is under pressure, courts cannot assume that legitimacy will take care of itself. They must earn it—case by case—through both the substance of what they decide and the way they exercise authority in public view.
