Problem

While parallels between Ancient Near East (ANE) literature and the Hebrew Bible are well established in contemporaneous scholarship, the Greek corpus has received little attention in recent studies. This paper addresses this gap by investigating a theophany scene from each corpus, in order to compare how the human-deity encounter is presented in Exodus 3:1–4:17 and Odyssey 1:96–324.

Method

The textual analysis of each scene employs a narratological framework. It takes both texts synchronically and grounds its comparison on the narrative formal elements, structures, and functions. The similarities and differences between each theophany are presented by their emerging themes and …

Over the centuries, the Bible has been reproduced in various forms, from scrolls to codex, handwritten codex to printed books, and, more recently, the digital Bible. However, proprietary software tools lack in providing a more rigorous approach to advanced research in data-driven linguistic and exegetical studies.

I report the final implementation of a data conversion project to convert an existing open source Nestle 1904 Greek New Testament encoded in XML format through Text-Fabric software (N1904-TF). Both Adventists and non-Adventists agree that it is the Adventist understanding of the sanctuary that sets them apart from other Christian denominations. In linear regression, the coefficients are simple to estimate using the least squares method with a known design matrix for the observed measurements. However, real-world applications may encounter complications such as an unknown design matrix and complex-valued parameters. The design matrix can be estimated from prior information but can potentially cause an inverse problem when multiplying by the transpose as it is generally ill-conditioned. This can be combat by adding regularizers to the model but does not always mitigate the issues. Cooperative breeding systems represent an array of varied reproductive strategies and remain a topic of interest in behavioral ecology (i.e., Riehl 2013, Cornwallis et al. 2017). Different manifestations of cooperative breeding, such as cooperative polyandry, no doubt have unique evolutionary pressures tied to local ecologies which have led to their proliferation. Of particular interest are species that show flexibility in their use of reproductive strategies, wherein individuals may choose one strategy over another given a specific circumstance. Programmed genome rearrangement (PGR) in the sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) leads to the elimination of ~0.5Gb (20%) of the germline genome during early embryogenesis, yet its timing relative to the maternal-to-zygotic transition (MZT) remains unclear. In this study, we imaged embryos cleared at 3-hour intervals (up to 72 hours post fertilization (hpf)) using high-resolution lightsheet fluorescence microscopy and a custom deep-learning image-analysis pipeline (~80% accuracy) to quantify nuclei and micronuclei counts. Micronuclei, which are the hallmarks of PGR first appear between 24 to 27hpf (vs ~36hpf previously reported) indicating PGR starts earlier than previously reported in the sea …

Maintaining cellular energy balance and redox stability is crucial to cell survival, with glutamine metabolism playing a central role. While extensively studied in cancer, where it supports biosynthesis and reduces oxidative stress to promote tumor growth, its function in non-cancerous contexts like tissue development and muscle regeneration remains less understood. A key aspect of stem cell biology is quiescence, a metabolically dormant state that preserves the stem cell pool, yet the mechanisms regulating this state are not fully clear. A new international instrument on copyright limitations and exceptions (L&Es) is pertinent to fostering education and research and enhancing the work of educational, research, and cultural institutions, including libraries, archives, and museums. The existing international instrument on L&Es, the Marrakesh Treaty, sits alone amongst many international copyright instruments for the protection of rightsholders, the Marrakesh Treaty only covering exceptions for print-disabled persons. There is currently no international obligation on countries to guarantee the interests of copyright users in education and research through a set of copyright limitations and exceptions. We live in an era of almost infinite digital interactions, many of which involve risks to our rights stemming from various problematic practices, such as data-protection infringements, user profiling, and consumer protection violations. Currently, the protection of digital consumers against these risks rests primarily on a "notice-and-consent" regulatory model-users are legally presumed to have consented to the terms of service (ToS) and privacy policy agreements (PPAs) of the digital services they use. In their high-profile suit in late 2023, The New York Times Company ("The Times") alleged that OpenAI's Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) language models might output "near-verbatim" copies ("memorizations") of the works of The Times based on certain user prompts and thus might have infringed on The Times's exclusive rights over its content. One of the central issues is whether the embodiment of unauthorized reproductions of Times content in the GPT models constitutes a copyright infringement. This comment argues that OpenAI might have a colorable fair use affirmative defense despite the plaintiff's prima facie copyright infringement claim.

In 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Murphy v. NCAA struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA). Since 1992, this federal law had prohibited most states from allowing sports betting, with some limited exceptions. Following the landmark ruling in Murphy, 39 states and the District of Columbia have moved to permit variousforms of legalized sports betting. The industry is growing exponentially, reaching almost $150 billion in total legalized bets in 2024, and $14 billion in revenues.

Toxic cyanobacteria are likely to be favored by global warming and other human impacts, posing significant threats to aquatic ecosystems. While cyanobacterial blooms in eutrophic lakes are widely investigated, the dynamics of cyanobacteria and the effects of their toxins and bioactive metabolites on the plankton communities in mesotrophic and oligotrophic lakes are less well understood. Here we investigated seasonal dynamics of cyanobacteria, eukaryotic algae and cyanotoxins in oligo-mesotrophic Lake Geneva—the largest and deepest lake in western Europe. High-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA genes in 143 samples along a water column revealed that Lake Geneva hosts diverse, co-dominant cyanobacterial genera, …

The U.N. Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG) stipulates that the seller can cure a lack of conformity by supplying a replacement. On the other hand, the buyer can only demand a replacement delivery if the lack of conformity constitutes a fundamental breach of contract. In contrast, according to the European Sales Law Directive, the consumer may, at his choice, require the seller to repair the goods or to replace them “in the first place”. This article traces the developments that have led to these different regulatory approaches.

AIM: Camino a la Salud addresses diabetes in one of the most affected populations in San Joaquin County, older Hispanic adults and their caregivers. This project aims to increase diabetes knowledge, confidence, and self-management among older adults in Stockton through culturally tailored education and hands-on learning. The project also provided glucometers and visual teaching tools to support skill development and improve diabetes awareness and prevention in this community.
