Climate Adaptation And Bankruptcy: Preparing Utilities For What Is To Come, Hayley Roy Jan 2025

Climate Adaptation And Bankruptcy: Preparing Utilities For What Is To Come, Hayley Roy

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

Climate change is an existential crisis that has and will continue to impact every aspect of our daily lives. An overlooked component of life in the United States, except in times of crisis, is our energy grid, which will continuously feel the consequences of climate change. Electricity is a basic necessity for most people in the U.S., but it is underprepared for the realities of climate change. Climate adaptation is a necessary step forward that energy utilities must take to ensure the resilience and reliability of electricity. Failure to adequately adapt will lead to dangerous situations as seen in the …

Testing The Waters: Expanding Chapter 9 Bankruptcy To Encourage Treatment Of Chemically Contaminated Drinking Water, Alexandra Zimmer Jan 2025

Testing The Waters: Expanding Chapter 9 Bankruptcy To Encourage Treatment Of Chemically Contaminated Drinking Water, Alexandra Zimmer

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

Chemical contamination of drinking water supplies has become a significant issue across the globe with serious health and safety impacts. While the true extent of the impact is still being determined, costs associated with remediation efforts to clean up are astonishing. Municipalities, in particular cities, towns, and counties, suffer significant damages both through costs incurred directly for treatment of chemically contaminated drinking water supplies and through lost revenues resulting from municipal residents’ exposure.

This Comment argues Congress should expand municipal access to filing for bankruptcy under chapter 9 of the Bankruptcy Code to encourage local government efforts to clean up …

Healthcare Providers’ Lived Experiences During Pivotal Change, Lisa Raynelle Shelley Jan 2025

Healthcare Providers’ Lived Experiences During Pivotal Change, Lisa Raynelle Shelley

Dissertations

This phenomenological study examined healthcare providers’ lived experiences of psychological safety and administrative leader behaviors that influenced those experiences during pivotal change. While much research addressed psychological safety among frontline healthcare staff, a gap was noticed concerning providers. This study aimed to investigate the impact of psychological safety and administrative support on provider engagement, emotional response, and retention during periods of significant change. Data were collected via a survey containing multiple-choice and open-ended questions, followed by semi-structured interviews. Four findings emerged. First, the providers’ pivotal events generated themes of “workplace power dynamics,” “systemic and organizational change,” “transformational crisis,” and “physical …

A Qualitative Study On The Cultural Adaptation Process Of Adventist Volunteers In Central Asia, Cecilia Nanni

Journal of Adventist Mission Studies

The cultural adaptation process for the volunteers who participated in this study follows, according to their own perceptions, a progressive sequence of five stages: Awe/Confusion, Denial, Observation, Integration, and Habituation. As shown, this process is not without difficulties and negative feelings such as confusion, discouragement, sadness, anger, and rejection, which are inherent to the processes of uprooting and cultural change. However, it is evident how experiences evolve as time passes, culminating in acceptance, learning, comfort, adjustment, and adaptation.

When Is Free Speech “Beyond” The Constitution?, Abner S. Greene Jan 2025

When Is Free Speech “Beyond” The Constitution?, Abner S. Greene

Faculty Scholarship

The constitution of a nation without a state action doctrine might limit private restriction or compulsion of speech just as it limits the state. In such a nation, “free speech beyond the constitution” might not be a particularly meaningful concept. In the United States, however, the First Amendment’s free speech clause limits only what the federal, state, and local governments may do. As a nonconstitutional policy matter, it might or might not be a good idea for the government to impose First Amendment- like restrictions on private actors or for private actors to voluntarily impose First Amendment-like restrictions on themselves. …

Promise And Limits Of Total Governance: A Response To Professors Gramitto Ricci And Greenwood, Atinuke O. Adediran Jan 2025

Promise And Limits Of Total Governance: A Response To Professors Gramitto Ricci And Greenwood, Atinuke O. Adediran

Faculty Scholarship

In their article, Total Governance, Professors Gramitto Ricci and Greenwood theorize about how to increase the power and influence of ordinary individual shareholders who do not have a lot of wealth. The total governance framework has some promise for increasing the influence of ordinary people in corporate governance. It also raises questions about treating corporate actors as monoliths: managers, boards of directors, shareholders, and stakeholders. This brief response, however, takes the position of a skeptic who recognizes the theoretical potential of the total governance framework while highlighting the shortcomings of the concept for corporate governance.

Under Political Pressure: How Courts And Congress Can Help Prosecutors Do Justice, Bruce A. Green, Rebecca Roiphe Jan 2025

Under Political Pressure: How Courts And Congress Can Help Prosecutors Do Justice, Bruce A. Green, Rebecca Roiphe

Faculty Scholarship

Some subordinate federal prosecutors faced a challenging professional dilemma in the early days of the second Trump Administration. It arose from the tension between their role as public officials and lawyers who owe fiduciary duties to the public and their role as Department of Justice (DOJ) employees who take direction from higher-ups. The DOJ leadership directed these subordinate prosecutors to use their considerable power in ways evidently designed to advance partisan political objectives. This was contrary to the clear understanding previously expressed by courts, the legal profession, and the DOJ itself that prosecutors have a duty to seek justice, which …

Subordinate Prosecutors’ Independence, Bruce A. Green, Jessica A. Roth Jan 2025

Subordinate Prosecutors’ Independence, Bruce A. Green, Jessica A. Roth

Faculty Scholarship

This essay is about subordinate prosecutors’ independence to do what they think constitutes “seeking justice” when they perceive that their boss, or their boss’s boss, wants them to do something that is unjust—not illegal, but unjust. Of course, if subordinate prosecutors want to do either what they are told to do or what they infer that a higher-up wants them to do, they can do so, as long as the conduct is legal. Subordinate prosecutors might choose to disregard their own professional judgment of what justice requires because they share their boss’s objectives, because they see conforming as a route …

A weird thing happens when a conscientious, rational judge lacks certainty and has the humility to know it: she will often decide cases for reasons that differ from the reasons in her opinions. To illustrate, suppose she thinks it’s 50/50 whether Defendant’s copying infringed or was fair use. She could rationally flip a coin. But if she does, and she finds for Defendant, it will not be because of fair use. Rather, it will be because she thought it was 50/50 whether the copying was fair use—and the coin landed tails.

Coin-flip cases are rare, but uncertainty is not. There …

Novel Sex Work Anti-Discrimination Protections, Chi Adanna Mgbako, Christine Eldabh, Katie Falk, Emma Pennie

Faculty Scholarship

Sex workers throughout the world experience ubiquitous and acute discrimination in every facet of their lives due to deeprooted stigma. Societal fear and hatred of sex workers often lead to their exclusion from healthcare services, financial institutions, and accessible housing, as well as their marginalization by the carceral state, family law systems, media, and politicians. Between 2022 and 2024, the Australian jurisdictions of the Northern Territory, Queensland, and Victoria passed groundbreaking legislation codifying novel anti-discrimination protections for sex workers. These laws are the first in the world to explicitly protect sex workers against discrimination in accommodation, employment, government services, and …

Anti-Icing Properties Of 3d-Printed Superhydrophobic Surfaces, Nathan Kling

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This project aims to investigate how textured microscopic surfaces can reduce ice adhesion, utilizing 3D-printed resin materials. By varying the size and shape of these surface imperfections, the research seeks to identify configurations that minimize ice formation and facilitate easier ice removal. The trapped air between the imperfections is expected to hinder water droplet adhesion, promoting detachment through gravity or motion. The study’s applications could extend to preventing icing on power lines, roads, and aircraft. Methodologically, the project will build on prior research, applying water to textured surfaces under controlled temperature conditions to assess ice formation and removal efficiency. Key …

Qualitative Analysis Of Surface Modification On Wiffleball Aerodynamics, Cole Lanni Jan 2025

Qualitative Analysis Of Surface Modification On Wiffleball Aerodynamics, Cole Lanni

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This project investigated how surface modifications to a Wiffleball affect its aerodynamic behavior, particularly its vertical and horizontal movement when thrown. The study tested the hypothesis that altering surface texture through cutting or sanding would influence airflow and pressure differentials, thereby changing the ball's movement. Six ball conditions: including unmodified, sanded, and various cut patterns were tested using a pitching machine in a controlled indoor environment. Each variation was pitched ten times, and movement was analyzed through measurements of contact points on posterboards and performing statistical testing, specifically ANOVA with Post Hoc analysis. Results indicated that surface modifications significantly increased …

Design Of An Active-Control Pressure Regulator For A Rocket, Seth Arkwright Jan 2025

Design Of An Active-Control Pressure Regulator For A Rocket, Seth Arkwright

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

An electronically actuated pressure-regulation valve and controller are necessary for maintaining pressure levels in a pressure-fed liquid-fueled rocket engine. Mechanical regulators are too heavy and have unacceptably high-pressure variation throughout the operation of a dynamic system like a rocket. Developing an electronic pressure regulator using a PID controller is a method by which a reliable, accurate, and lightweight flow regulator can be built for use on a rocket vehicle. This work will outline the development of flow simulations, PID controller, physical valve hardware, and initial testing.

Urotropine As A Corrosion Inhibitor In Steel Rebar: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Tyler Zadrozny Jan 2025

Urotropine As A Corrosion Inhibitor In Steel Rebar: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Tyler Zadrozny

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This project investigates the behavior of corrosion in rebar, a critical component in infrastructure such as roads and skyscrapers. Corrosion of rebar can lead to structural instability, visible as cracks or pitting on the surface. The primary focus is on the potential of urotropine as a corrosion inhibitor. Urotropine, known for its ability to inhibit corrosion in mild steel in acidic environments, is hypothesized to be effective in preventing corrosion on rebar. To explore this, molecular dynamics simulations using LAMMPS were conducted, modeling urotropine molecules in an acidic solution (PH = 1) interacting with iron atoms, mimicking rebar. Simulations were …

Modeling The Thermodynamics Of Butadiene And Carbon Dioxide Coupling Reactions, Alexis Sarantos Jan 2025

Modeling The Thermodynamics Of Butadiene And Carbon Dioxide Coupling Reactions, Alexis Sarantos

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This project will analyze the synthesis reaction of ethenylated 𝛿-valerolactone (EVL), specifically to determine certain thermodynamic properties of EVL and its coproducts. The thermodynamic properties of the reaction products can then be utilized to make the development of a large-scale process simpler and safer. The properties that will be determined are the heats of formations, heat capacities, and changes in enthalpy caused by each product during the reaction, and these will be used to determine whether the energy produced by the reaction is sufficient to maintain formation of the desired product. Additionally, a process model of heat flows and energy …
