Liquid-Liquid Extraction Of Nd(Iii) Using [P66614][Cy272] Ionic Liquid, Prasanjit Das, Kali Sanjay, Niharbala Devi Jan 2025

Liquid-Liquid Extraction Of Nd(Iii) Using [P66614][Cy272] Ionic Liquid, Prasanjit Das, Kali Sanjay, Niharbala Devi

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

This study explores the extraction of Nd(III) from synthetic solutions using the ionic liquid [P66614] [Cy272]. Key extraction parameters, including the effect of phase contact time, initial pH, salting-out agents, extractant concentration, and temperature, were systematically optimized. Results revealed that a phase contact time of 15 min, an initial pH of 2.14, and 0.2 mol∙L‒1 NaCl as a salting-out agent and extractant concentration of 0.015 mol∙L‒1 [P66614][Cy272], achieved maximum extraction efficiency of 99.7%. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed the process is to be exothermic, spontaneous, and entropy-driven, highlighting the strong complexation between Nd(III) and the ionic liquid [P66614][Cy272]. Stripping tests revealed that …

Impacts Of Recent Us Supreme Court Administrative Law Jurisprudence On The Electricity Wholesale Markets, Joel B. Eisen Jan 2025

Impacts Of Recent Us Supreme Court Administrative Law Jurisprudence On The Electricity Wholesale Markets, Joel B. Eisen

Law Faculty Publications

Recent decisions by the US Supreme Court have prompted a shift toward limiting the authority of US federal administrative agencies, including the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the agency that oversees the nation’s wholesale electricity markets. This Article explores the impact of several of the Court’s major decisions on rules and administrative orders by FERC that govern the wholesale markets. These include decisions empowering judges to overturn agency regulations, enabling challengers to agency enforcement to force agencies to pursue cases in federal courts, and allowing lawsuits to challenge agency rules long after their issuance. These decisions promise to have significant …

Integrating Academic Success, Krishnee Coley, Laura A. Webb Jan 2025

Integrating Academic Success, Krishnee Coley, Laura A. Webb

Law Faculty Publications

Over the past few years, Richmond Law has taken several intentional steps to address one of ASP’s perennial challenges: the students who most need help may not be the ones who find their way to optional ASP sessions. By integrating academic success into orientation programs and collaborating with doctrinal professors, we’ve succeeded in reaching all our 1L students despite the lack of a mandatory 1L ASP course.

Minor V. Happersett, Dobbs V. Jackson Women's Health Organization, And The Supreme Court's Refusal To Reconstruct America, Henry L. Chambers, Jr. Jan 2025

Minor V. Happersett, Dobbs V. Jackson Women's Health Organization, And The Supreme Court's Refusal To Reconstruct America, Henry L. Chambers, Jr.

Law Faculty Publications

One hundred and fifty years ago, in the wake of the ratification of the Reconstruction Amendments, the United States Supreme Court decided Minor v. Happersett. In Minor, the Court ruled Missouri could continue to deny women the right to vote based on their sex. The decision was simply reasoned. In the absence of clear constitutional text requiring Missouri to provide the right to vote to women or proof that the right to vote was a right of citizenship, Missouri had no obligation to allow women to vote. Some states had banned women citizens from voting since the country’s founding. Missouri …

Anti-Democratic Rights Of Nature, Noah M. Sachs Jan 2025

Anti-Democratic Rights Of Nature, Noah M. Sachs

Law Faculty Publications

The global Rights of Nature (RoN) movement, which seeks to confer enforceable rights on organisms and ecosystems, has become a political force, and governments are now codifying legal rights for nature in legislation. But policymakers and legal scholars are overlooking how assertions of vague rights held by a limitless class of non-humans could lead to repressive, anti-democratic outcomes. Many scholars view recognition of nature’s rights as an expansion of the boundaries of democracy, but a critical examination of RoN scholarship and advocacy shows that RoN principles are designed to check and constrain democratic institutions. Core tenets of the RoN movement …

Capital Punishment, Crimmigration, And The Necropolitical Agenda Against Noncitizens, Erin R. Collins Jan 2025

Capital Punishment, Crimmigration, And The Necropolitical Agenda Against Noncitizens, Erin R. Collins

Law Faculty Publications

On January 20, 2025, President Trump signed Executive Order 14164, Restoring the Death Penalty and Protecting Public Safety. This Order, one of twenty-six signed on Inauguration Day, directs the Attorney General to seek the death penalty for any “capital crime committed by an alien illegally present in this country,” and specifies the mandate applies “regardless of other factors.” In other words, the Order requires federal prosecutors to set aside their duty to determine what punishment comports with justice in an individual case, and instead seek the authority to kill anyone who is within the country without lawful status upon …

Reparations For Civilian Victims In Ukraine And Gaza: Legal Frameworks, Normative Debates, And Implementation, Chiara Giorgetti Jan 2025

Reparations For Civilian Victims In Ukraine And Gaza: Legal Frameworks, Normative Debates, And Implementation, Chiara Giorgetti

Law Faculty Publications

Reparations for the victims of armed conflict and mass human rights violations are a cornerstone of international law. Yet, as recent conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza illustrate well, reparations remain a difficult subject and raise important questions regarding the scope of State responsibility, the rights of individual victims, and the availability of appropriate mechanisms for adjudicating claims. Beyond Wall Street: Inside The Legal Battles Of Private Companies, Jessica M. Erickson Jan 2025

Beyond Wall Street: Inside The Legal Battles Of Private Companies, Jessica M. Erickson

Law Faculty Publications

Boardroom battles on Wall Street command national attention. Yet the vast majority of business disputes in the United States do not take place on Wall Street and do not involve public companies. Nearly all American companies are privately held, and the disputes between the owners of these Main Street businesses seldom make headlines. Nor do they receive much attention in legal scholarship. While scholars have examined these disputes from a theoretical perspective, there have been no empirical studies analyzing lawsuits between the owners of private companies. As a result, we do not know why these business relationships fail or the …

Procedural Political Economy, Luke P. Norris Jan 2025

Procedural Political Economy, Luke P. Norris

Law Faculty Publications

When the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure came into being in 1938, a broad political economy discourse was driving significant legal and policy reform efforts. Legal scholars, economists, political leaders, and others placed questions of economic power and their relationship to democracy at the center of those reform efforts, honing and developing a political economy tradition that is a forebearer to today’s law-and-political economy (LPE) approach. Both then and today, the relationship of civil procedure to these trends has not been fully mined. This Article tells a vital part of that story, tracing the federal civil procedure system’s political economy …

Office Intent And Excessive Force, John F. Preis Jan 2025

Office Intent And Excessive Force, John F. Preis

Law Faculty Publications

In the mayhem that often accompanies a police officer’s use of force, all manner of mistakes and miscalculations can occur. Suspects are accidentally shot, innocent bystanders are bitten by police dogs, and hostages are killed instead of their kidnappers. To what degree may persons harmed by police mistakes obtain relief through excessive force claims?

At present, the answer to this question is surprisingly uncertain. It is clear that an excessive force claim requires that an officer intend to seize the suspect, but it is far less clear whether the officer must also intend the nature and extent of force used …

Minimal Justiciability, Riley T. Keenan Jan 2025

Minimal Justiciability, Riley T. Keenan

Law Faculty Publications

Federal courts adjudicate only justiciable disputes. But justiciable as to whom? The Supreme Court has hinted at an answer, holding that at least one plaintiff must show standing for each remedy sought in a federal case. But it has never explained this “one-plaintiff rule,” and recently some scholars have criticized it, arguing that Article III instead requires each plaintiff to show standing in every federal case.

This Article offers the missing explanation. Justiciability limits judicial power, it contends, and judicial relief is the constitutionally relevant expression of that power. Thus, Article III requires only one plaintiff with standing and a …

International Claims Commissions As Reparations, Chiara Giorgetti Jan 2025

International Claims Commissions As Reparations, Chiara Giorgetti

Law Faculty Publications

Breaches of international law have consequences. Under the Articles on the Responsibility of States for Internationally Wrongful Acts, the international responsibility of a state triggered by its internationally wrongful acts entails specific legal consequences, including the obligation to provide“full reparation” for the injury caused. However, obtaining reparations in the current international legal system often proves difficult. Existing international courts and tribunals often lack the jurisdiction to provide full reparations, especially when there are multiple and complex violations that caused injuries to numerous and diverse parties. International claims commissions can be effective instruments to provide reparations in such circumstances, including in …

Social Murder And The Antisocial Contract, Marissa Jackson Sow Jan 2025

Social Murder And The Antisocial Contract, Marissa Jackson Sow

Law Faculty Publications

Social murder is widely understood as the reckless and calculated killing by the State of people who are considered surplus and thus made redundant by the State. It is not merely an outcome, however; social murder, is an antidemocratic process, and—certainly as it is manifesting in the United States under the second Trump Administration—is also an anti-constitutionalist project aimed at destroying society, eliminating social goods, and renegotiating an American social contract that is, definitionally, antisocial. Social murder is as much about the elimination of social life as it is about the interruption of physical life. And it is fueled by …

Operationalizing A Pedagogy Of Antiracism In Legal Education, Doron Samuel-Siegel Jan 2025

Operationalizing A Pedagogy Of Antiracism In Legal Education, Doron Samuel-Siegel

Law Faculty Publications

To reckon with structural racism in legal education, legal educators collectively must do much more than we have done thus far. A true reckoning will occur only once we provide an education that ensures racially minoritized students can learn free of the harms of traditional legal education, and that all students are equipped to contribute to the dismantlement of structural racism in the law and legal profession. A pedagogy that centers these two goals counteracts the effects of structural racism while also creating conditions for its dismantlement, making it a pedagogy of antiracism.

This article is about moving toward the …
