Knowledge Engineering and Data Science

Long-term electricity load forecasting plays an important role in ensuring system reliability, optimizing energy management, and making operational plans in face of continuously rising electricity demands. This study suggests a complete deep learning method for univariate forecasting of future electricity loads based on climatology and electricity consumption data for the period between 2019 and 2023. The initial dataset was cleaned, normalized, and partitioned chronologically into train/test datasets. Four train/test split cases (20/80, 40/60, 60/40, 80/20) were considered to explore the impact of different levels of historical data availability on the performance of the suggested framework from data-poor to data-rich situations. …

Ukraine’S Proxy War Against Russia And Its Lessons For Europe, David M. Sip Jan 2025

Ukraine’S Proxy War Against Russia And Its Lessons For Europe, David M. Sip

Journal of Strategic Security

Much focus in the research on the topic of proxies and Ukraine is on the Russian proxies in the Donbas. But Ukraine itself is fielding several proxy groups formed from Russian exiles and minorities such as Chechen's fighting for the freedom of their home. By interpreting Ukraine’s proxy war against Russia as a means of inter-war deterrence this article proposes that Ukraine aims at deterring Russia from a general mobilization and an all-out escalation of the war. The effectiveness of this approach, its limits, and problems are analyzed, as well as the mistakes Ukraine has made in taking this approach. …

The Sensitivity Of The Human Development Index To Assumptions About Income, Maria C. Kula, Charles J. Moyer, Priniti Panday Jan 2025

The Sensitivity Of The Human Development Index To Assumptions About Income, Maria C. Kula, Charles J. Moyer, Priniti Panday

Business Faculty Publications

The Human Development Index (HDI) aims to present a more robust picture of a country’s development status than that suggested by national income per capita. The HDI aggregates dimension indices based on transformed measures for the core values of health, education, and income per capita. Assumptions are made regarding the upper and lower bounds used to re-scale each core value into its dimension index, as well as the functional form used to create the HDI. The treatment of income in the HDI’s construction suggests incompatibilities with its underlying capability theory, which stresses the importance of individuals’ abilities to make their …

Bakterielle Schutzmechanismen Gegen Hypochlorige Säure, Jan-Ulrik Dahl

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Reactive chlorine species (RCS) are highly bactericidal and produced in large amounts during host defense to kill invading pathogens. More recent studies have investigated how bacteria respond to and defend RCS, which appear to elicit more multifaceted responses compared to reactive oxygen species. A comprehensive understanding of bacterial RCS responses has clear potential to devise strategies that increase the sensitivity of bacterial pathogens to host defenses without harming commensals.

Training Module And Assessment Strategy For Light Microscopy Skills Training In A Research Environment, Kristopher E. Kubow, Joseph A. Harsh

Faculty Scholarship

Training in specialized techniques and instrumentation is an important component of undergraduate and graduate education. While such training can occur in formal lab courses, it also occurs as students engage in research. Although training in a research lab setting is typically informal, implementing evidence-based practices from the classroom would be beneficial, particularly for learning complex techniques and instruments, for example, light microscopy. Using advanced microscopes for research is more complicated than using teaching microscopes in a course. In addition, microscopes are easy to misuse because they will generally always produce an image even if that image is suboptimal, misleading, or …

Video Comprehension Score (Vcs): A Metric For Long-Form Video Description Evaluation, Harsh Dubey Jan 2025

Video Comprehension Score (Vcs): A Metric For Long-Form Video Description Evaluation, Harsh Dubey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Existing video description evaluation metrics fail to capture the long-range chronology and semantic alignment essential for long-form descriptions. An effective evaluation metric for long-form descriptions must (i) assess global thematic alignment, (ii) measure local semantic alignment, and (iii) evaluate chronological alignment while detecting corrupted content. We introduce Video Comprehension Score (VCS), a reference-based metric, which directly addresses these evaluation requirements through three components: Global Alignment Score for thematic alignment, Local Alignment Score for local semantic alignment, and Narrative Alignment Score for chronological alignment with adjustable tolerance. We evaluate VCS on two large-scale synthetic datasets designed to test corruption detection and …

Quantifying Landscape Variability Of Dynamic Soil Properties In The James River Valley, Eastern South Dakota, Sage Reuter-Schmitt Jan 2025

Quantifying Landscape Variability Of Dynamic Soil Properties In The James River Valley, Eastern South Dakota, Sage Reuter-Schmitt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dynamic soil properties (DSP) are a great tool for monitoring land-use change, and they are frequently used as soil health metrics. The NRCS and other soil researchers often use repeating, single-point or nested-point DSP studies to monitor and better understand the effects of land management decisions. While these studies capture the temporal variability of DSPs, they overlook the field-scale spatial variability of DSPs. Soil organic carbon (SOC) provides critical services to the ecosystem and other environments. These traits, as well as its susceptibility to management decisions, make SOC an important soil health indicator and DSP. Measuring SOC is often time …

The Spatial And Temporal Dimensions Of Plant–Soil Feedback In Native Perennial Monocultures, Bret Lang Jan 2025

The Spatial And Temporal Dimensions Of Plant–Soil Feedback In Native Perennial Monocultures, Bret Lang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Plant-soil feedbacks (PSFs) describe how plants change their soil environment in ways that can either negatively or positively affect subsequent plant growth. In doing so, they offer an opportunity to connect ecological processes with agricultural practice. My dissertation examines PSFs created by native perennial monocultures, commonly used for native seed production, across time and space, and through soil legacies. Specifically, I focus on how plant species identity shapes both soil nutrient and soil microbial community responses. To address these questions, I conducted field experiments with monocultures of five forb species native to South Dakota and established plots with these species …
